Par2cmdline with non normal characters.
by Robin Laing
Hello,
I am trying to run par2 to repair an archive that has an apostrophe in
the name. Not a single quote. This archive was created on Windows.
File name should be
Joe’s file.part01.rar
If I do ls I get
Joe?s file.part01.rar
ls -b I get
Joe\302\222s\ file.part01.rar
Running par2 *.par2 runs par2 cmdline but all the files are missing and
par2 says all the files are missing.
Target: "Joe’s file.part01.rar" - missing.
Target: "Joe’s file.part02.rar" - missing.
Target: "Joe’s file.part03.rar" - missing.
Target: "Joe’s file.part04.rar" - missing.
Doesn't see the repair files either.
How can I escape these characters or run the program? I have searched
for a day to see how to run this program. I have seen others ask the
same question as well.
Is there a way to use 'exec' or another option?
I have tried to change the terminal character set with no luck or just
haven't found the correct character set yet.
I cannot rename the files as the par2 and repair files look for the
original file names.
I don't even know how to enter the characters in the terminal.
I notice if I look at the file name in a graphics file manager
(dolphin), I just get a square with some unreadable code in it. Same if
I try to look at it in a directory listing from a program. Am I missing
a font set for this and would that make it work better.
As I cannot confirm the language the file was created in, I may be
missing the correct font on my system to work with it as well.

issues after update f23
by François Patte
Bonjour,
I experience many issues after updating f23. For instance: I have xfce4
installed, when I login, it takes ages to open the session and at the
end no window manager is running. Looking in .xsession-errors, I can read:

xfwm4-Message: Another Window Manager (unknown) is already running on
screen :0.0
xfwm4-Message: To replace the current window manager, try "--replace"
(xfwm4:1506): xfwm4-WARNING **: Could not find a screen to manage, exiting
(xfwm4:1507): xfwm4-WARNING **: Could not find a screen to manage, exiting
xfwm4-Message: Another Window Manager (unknown) is already running on
screen :0.0
(xfwm4:1510): xfwm4-WARNING **: Could not find a screen to manage, exiting
xfwm4-Message: To replace the current window manager, try "--replace"
(xfwm4:1509): xfwm4-WARNING **: Could not find a screen to manage, exiting
repeated many times...

Looking in the dnf.log file, I can see that no xfce package was updated...
What can produce this issue?
Thank you.

data restore after an upgrade?
by Jeffrey Ross
Looking for some suggestions and thoughts.
I am upgrading the OS on a system with older hardware that I have, it is
currently running Fedora 16 and I'm looking to upgrade it to Fedora 23.
The system has 4 SATA 1.0 interfaces, two are are in use for the two
removable disks in the front of the case, the other two are inside the
case and although not impossible to access they are a little difficult
to access.
The original system has 2 disks with multiple partitions, each partition
is in a RAID-1 configuration, the new system has the same basic
configuration but was built on different hardware (at a physically
different location). Considering that system partitions are relatively
static I've made a copy of those in the event I forgot something that I
need, what I'm trying to figure out is how to deal with the user
partition (/home) since this partition is very dynamic.
My thoughts are to first boot the new disks in the old system making
sure everything is stable then either
1) break the mirror insert one of the old disks into the system and
mount the /home partition someplace and simply copy the files, pull the
old disk and insert the new disk then rebuild the mirror
or
2) connect one of the old disks to the now new system via a USB to SATA
adapter (note the machine only has usb 1.1) mount the disk and copy the
data over.
or
3) open the system up and connect one of the old disks to one of the
internal SATA connectors mount the disk and copy the files over.
or
4) ????
It's not a huge amount of data as I'm only looking at a little less than
25GB of data to copy over.
If it matters the system is a dual Opteron 275 system with 16GB of ram,
its more than sufficient for what its doing which is why I'm not looking
to upgrade.
Thanks, Jeff

[OT] last email received from fedora project

greetings.
the last email i received from fedora project is;
Subject: Re: Undefined library symbol in libwx_gtk3u_core-3.0.so.0

is this actually the latest, or is yuckahoo bouncing emails from
fedora project again?
such has happened before several times and i have had to rejoin list.
before at&t turned emails service over to yuckahoo, i had no problems.
now, i am continually seeing threads with out original post.
sending approval forms to yuckahoo has been nearly a waste of time.
the only solution i see is to drop all services with at&t and use
comcast as my isp and gmail for my list emails.
can anyone suggest otherwise?

SELINUX Problem (Firefox Create access on rawip_socket)
by CS DBA
Hi All;
I'm running Fedora 23 KDE Spin, After a recent firefox update (I'm now
at Firefox 46.0.1) I've been getting these SELINUX alerts:
The source process: 57656220436F6E74656E74

On this rawip_socket:
The alert gives me 2 choices:
1) If I want to use the plugin package:
you must turn off SELinux controls on the Firefox plugins.
# setsebool -P unconfined_mozilla_plugin_transition 0
2) If I believe that 57656220436F6E74656E74 should be allowed to create
access on the Unknown rawip_socket by default:
You should report this as a bug.
You can generate a local policy module to allow this access.
Allow this access for now by executing:
# ausearch -c 57656220436F6E74656E74 --raw | audit2allow -M mypol
# semodule -i mypol.pp
If I click on "Plugin Details" I get this:

Thoughts? Is this a bug? Should I run the setsebool command to allow access?
Thanks in advance

dnf nstalled audacity x86_64 2.1.2-4.fc25
without any problems. No dep issues at all.
But when I run audacity, I get

Fedora magazine - interesting but bizarrely set out
by Timothy Murphy
I was just looking at the Fedora Magazine <https://fedoramagazine.org/>,
as I do from time to time,
and was struck yet again by the bizarre organization of this resource.
As far as I can see, there is no index - just what seems like
a random collection of articles presented in a blog-like format.
There is no list of back articles,
which every other digital magazine I know provides.
When I think of the large amount of time that Matthew Miller -
someone who has helped me on several occasions,
and whom I hold in the highest regard -
must spend collecting and editing the contributions,
I'm completely baffled by the failure to offer an index,
with links to past articles.
