why dnf wants to reinstall to same version ?
by sean darcy
FC29. I have a server for video encoding. I use x264, which I keep
updated to the most recent git packaaged in an rpm.
rpm -q x264-libs
x264-libs-0.157-0.20190331.fc29.x86_64
I then rebuild all the packages that depend on x264, including
avidemux-libs. I just rebuild on my machine, without chaging the
version, since the version hasn't changed, it's just linked to the new
x264 version.
rpm -q avidemux-libs
avidemux-libs-2.7.3-1.fc29.x86_64
But dnf want to replace my rebuild version, with the version for the repo:
dnf upgrade --refresh
..............
Problem 1: package avidemux-libs-2.7.3-1.fc29.x86_64 requires
libx264.so.155()(64bit), but none of the providers can be installed
- cannot install both
x264-libs-0.155-2.20180806git0a84d98.fc29.x86_64 and
x264-libs-0.157-0.20190331.fc29.x86_64
I don't want to bump the avidemux-libs version, since I want to know
when a new one is available. I don't want to keep adding "-x avidemux.."
Why does dnf want to replace the installed package ? How does it even
know it's not the same package as the repo ?

Feature request: pre-tweaking
by Beartooth
Whenever I do a fresh install (preferably a net install or one
from a live medium -- they're smaller), as soon as I reboot into it and
update it, I launch dnfdragora and go through, first, all the apps I know
I don't need, or hope I won't. (When in doubt, I hit Apply often and read
through the resulting list with great care.)
That done, I start over, this time looking for things I know or
hope I will want. By the time I've done both, I've pretty well killed a
day, often two.
And then I still have to do the other half: arranging panels,
icons, and the like into places where my fingers can find them, without
taking what's left of my mind off what it's doing.
As an old retired fart blissfully unconcerned with production of
anything, I can afford all this; but it's gawdawful tedious. If there's a
better way that a non-technoid can use, somebody please clue me in!
If I could have my druthers, I'd like some snapshot that would
record my tweaks shortly before a fresh install, and write them to a
temporary external medium. Then after the fresh install, it would check
as best it could, show me the changes, and offer to carry them out.
I realize such a tool could never be perfect. There will always
be new releases of one standby or another, and other bigger changes that
give the May or November release of Fedora good reason for taking a new
number. Nevertheless, there are also mature apps, such as mailers and
list servers, that some of us want and some of us don't, which change
only slowly. There are terminal tabs, font sizes, locations of launchers,
and so forth and so on. The tool I'm wish-dreaming of would seize *my*
tweaks and carry them over to feed into the new install.
All this or something like it happens now with an upgrade, and
may the developers be blessed above all nations for making it the
preferred way! But sometimes for instance I replace a machine ....

Running vdagent with QEMU/KVM + Spice
by Patrick O'Callaghan
F29 host with Win10 guest. I want to use Spice to get the improved
features (shared folders, cut-and-paste between host and guest, etc.),
but when I install Spice Guest Tools under the Win10 guest I
immediately lose the mouse and keyboard in the guest. 'Immediately'
meaning that after installation it freezes before I can even dismiss
the 'Install Done' pop-up.
As I understand the Spice docs, there is supposed to be a vdagent
running in the host, but there isn't. Even when I try to run vdagent
from a terminal it doesn't appear to do anything. I can run vdagentd
(using 'sudo') but that makes no difference.
Any thoughts? I can post my guest XML file if it's of interest.

Is there a way to download the text showing on a web page?
by ToddAndMargo
Hi All,
Curl can download the source of a web page. Is there a way to
download what shows on a web page after all the javascritps
have done their thing? (From the command line, not my hand
and my mouse.)
Many thanks,

how to get stoken?
by S. Bob
Hi all;
I have Fedora 29 running as my laptop, I can run dnf search stoken and
it finds it, however if I create a new Fedora 29 VM dnf cannot find
stoken. Anyone know what package / repo I need to install to get stoken?
One odd thing is that dnf provides shows stoken (on my laptop) as coming
from fedora.repo
$ dnf provides stoken

stoken-cli-0.91-6.fc29.x86_64 : Command line tool for stoken
Repo : fedora
Matched from:
Filename : /usr/bin/stoken
I visually compared the fedora.repo files on the laptop vs VM, they seem
to be the same

Can't install VirtualBox Guest Additions.
by Erik P. Olsen
Hello,
I have problem installing VirtualBox Guest Additions. My host is 5.0.7-200.fc29.x86_64
And when I run the VGA installer on the guest system I get:
[erik@localhost VBox_GAs_6.0.4]$ sudo ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing VirtualBox 6.0.4 Guest Additions for Linux........

VirtualBox Guest Additions: Building the VirtualBox Guest Additions kernel

VirtualBox Guest Additions: To build modules for other installed kernels, run
VirtualBox Guest Additions: /sbin/rcvboxadd quicksetup <version>
VirtualBox Guest Additions: Building the modules for kernel
5.0.7-200.fc29.x86_64.
VirtualBox Guest Additions: Look at /var/log/vboxadd-setup.log to find out what
went wrong
VirtualBox Guest Additions: Running kernel modules will not be replaced until
the system is restarted
VirtualBox Guest Additions: Starting.
VirtualBox Guest Additions: modprobe vboxsf failed

Perhaps someone on this list has overcome this problem and would explain what I did
wrong? The /var/log/vboxadd-setup.log was of no help.

x2go trivia question
by Tom Horsley
Sometimes when I run x2go, the remote desktop
window will come up with a name for itself
like:
X2GO-tweety-50-1555418435_stD.x2goinit_dp24
Other times it will come up with a name like:
x2go-tomh
Anyone have any idea why it sometimes chooses one
and sometimes the other (like I said, just
curiosity - nothing earth shattering depends
on the answer :-).

What is "org.freedesktop.UDisks2"
by Sam Varshavchik
And more importantly, why is it having a cow with kernel 5.0.5 on one, just
one, of my servers:
Apr 9 17:48:44 monster dbus-daemon[1223]: [system] Failed to activate
service 'org.freedesktop.UDisks2': timed out (service_start_timeout=25000ms)
kernel 5.0.4 is ok. kernel 5.0.5 is ok on other machines. But on this
machine, this mystery box fails to open. This is what's responsible for
various silly things that Thunar was doing, on my XFCE desktop.
Googling brings up a bunch of stuff, but very vague, and doesn't really help
me knowing where to look next. My only glimmer of hope, is that booting
5.1.0 from rawhide on the same server appears not to have this issue, so
this is probably fixed already/maybe/perhaps/i-hope-so.
