vim on remote file

I have found lately that when editing a file foo
mounted with autofs/NFS on a remote computer
I am often told that a swap file .foo.swp exists
even though I closed the file cleanly at the previous edit.

I'm running Fedora 12, and have the impression
that this has only occurred in the last few months.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Is there some NFS switch I should apply?
The remote folder is mounted by autofs with the command
        /common -rw,sync alfred:/common
