Budget, Objectives, Ambassadors, Events, Swag, and Media
by Matthew Miller
Okay, I promised to take this to the list, so here it is.
The budget for this year (FY16) is the same it was last year. The
budget request to our sponsor for next year (FY17, which goes from
March '16 to February '17) was the same again, but we need to plan for
the fact that it's likely to come back lower — even though Flock is
likely to be more expensive and we'd _like_ to do more things. (We
probably won't know until January or February. ¹)
I'd _really_ like to ask for increasing amounts as Fedora grows and as
we invest to grow Fedora. This goes for fundraising beyond Red Hat as
well (for sponsorships for things like Flock, but need not be limited
to that). Remy and I have been working hard to do what we can, but we
need your help.
I really _want_ and support the idea of making many decisions at the
regional and even local levels. You know what works on the ground. At
the same time, those decisions _need_ to connect up to broader project
goals, and they _should_ connect across and coordinate with other parts
of the project, for efficiency and for consistant message.
If you haven't seen the blog post I wrote about objectives, please see:
* http://fedoramagazine.org/lets-talk-about-fedora-project-objectives/
If you have something you're interested in that you feel benefits
Fedora, _awesome_, do it. As long as it fits within our Foundations,
you don't need anyone's permission and there won't be any "veto". ²
But, if you want to use Fedora resources — money, other people's time,
but also including speaking for the project as a representative —
please, please, be mindful of these connections. If you can draw a line
from what you're doing directly up to the Objectives the Council is
working on, that's _very_ powerful, and helps _me_ and Remy, and the
rest of Fedora leadership in lending our weight to supporting you.
If the things you're interested in don't really connect to the
collective project strategy, again, see above: there's room in Fedora
for all kinds of different ideas and directions. But, we have limited
resources. To put this in concrete terms, if the overall strategy calls
for growing Fedora beyond traditional Linuxfests and appealing directly
to developers and to sysadmins in new ways, but Ambassadors want to
spend the bulk of effort on those traditional things, we need to put
the money elsewhere.
That might sound like a threat, and it kind of is, but not necessarily
the way it sounds. It's not a threat to stop doing what you're
interested in. It's a threat to _get involved in connecting this up_,
and the consequence for not doing it isn't arbitrary punishment. The
consequence is that Fedora gets less attention and resources because
we're not making an impact with what we have.
The super-awesome thing about Fedora is that these objectives and
strategy aren't dictated to us from corporate overlords. Of course,
when it comes to budget, Red Hat is our primary sponsor, and we
certainly need to take those needs into account as stakeholder. But
there's no secret agenda there: in fact, it's public:
* http://www.slideshare.net/mattdm-fedora/flock-2015-what-does-red-hat-want
* https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hb3zTQMJggo
Most importantly, keeping the sponsor happy isn't the only goal. *You*
are a stakeholder too, and I am too independent of my employment. ³
In our new governance model, the Council's *primary* role is "to
identify the short, medium, and long term goals of the Fedora community
and to organize and enable the project to best achieve them". That's
the "Objectives" I mentioned above. ⁴
If there's something which you believe can be demonstrated to
measurably advance Fedora which we're _not_ convering but should, we
have room for that! Write up a proposal, rally some people behind it,
convince the Council that it will work — and then make it work, with
the full weight of _everything_ behind you.

2. Since it came up in IRC, please note that the "FPL veto" is no
longer part of the governance model. See
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Council#Historical_Note
3. Red Hat has an awesome clause in our employment contracts, by the
way: when working on an open source project, we're instructed to
make decisions in the interest of the project even if they differ
from Red Hat's interests.

Re: REMINDER French Fedora Meeting Today #fedora-meeting-1
by Alexandre Moine
temps.

Accommodation issue during FAD Singapore 2015
by Danishka Navin
Hi Tuan,
This is to inform you that, I was not responsible for accommodation issue
of Prima Yogi and Sirko.
01. We had a deadline for accommodation booking on 23rd of November 2015.
But Prima's traveling was not confirmed at the time we booked accommodation.
02. As Izhar is the one who holding the credit card, he agreed to book
accommodation for those who confimed with their travel.
03. Some how Izhar could not manage the booking due to authorization issue.
see the irc chat in #fedora-fad
-------------------------
<KageSenshi> processing
<hanthana> thanks
<KageSenshi> ugh .. "unable to authorize payment"
<hanthana> eh
<KageSenshi> that includes paypal
* harish has quit (Quit: Leaving)
<hanthana> credit cards should work
<KageSenshi> hanthana, i've been facing trouble to do online transaction
using the card
<KageSenshi> it seems like having some region lock of some sort
<hanthana> KageSenshi, do the accept pay pal?
<KageSenshi> hanthana, i tried paypal just now, rejected
<KageSenshi> both card and paypal rejected
<hanthana> KageSenshi, I can book but not interested in waiting so long to
settle accounts :)
<KageSenshi> hanthana, book and immediately reimburse lor
<hanthana> haha
<hanthana> sure I can
----------------------------------
04. I did updated the wiki for all the people those who got accommodation
booked by myself [1]
05. I sent one last mail (with a link to the ticket I have opned [2])
before I was flying back to Sri Lanka and I clearly mentioned only 7 people
had the accommodation.
06. On 24th November 2015, you have initiated a mail with the subject of
"Tickets for Yogi and Izhar", where you can see there was no such
confirmaton.
07. I wonder why Prima did not check his accommodation status in the wiki
[1] before start flying. May be he so, exited to only travel but not other
things. :)
08. As we did the booking over AirBnB, I could not book accommodation for
someone not confimed his travel. But you (Tuan as one of organizer), Prima
himself could book his accommodation directly though the AirBnB on same
hostel.
09. It was not nice to use Sirko's booking for Prima instead of booking
accommodation for Prima. What if that hostel houseful at the time last
person rich?
So, please do not try to pass the ball on to myside.
Moreover, you suggest to invite David and we stuck with his slow response.
I would like to remind you that under what policy you make invite David?
Because he was not active last few years but you were not happy with Kalpa
(from Sri Lanka).
As the FAMSCO representative for APAC you should have equal interest on all
counties. You must understand that you are here to help and take care of
all the Ambassador in our regional issues but not just entertain your
friends.
As you are one of the candidate for current election, I wonder how you
gonna make APAC contribution, communication and culture better than before.

Fedora t-shirts for users
by Jiri Eischmann
Hi,
as I said at Flock, I'd like to make t-shirts who would not only be for
contributors, but also for users. At events such as FOSDEM, we meet a
lot of loyal, long-term users who beg us for t-shirts. We cannot sell
them, but we give them away in limited numbers (say <= per one large
event).
I've asked Masha of the design team to make some design for us. And
here are some mockups: https://fedorahosted.org/design-team/ticket/406
I'd like to hear from others how they like them or if they have
different suggestions.

[APAC] Listing events/activities from each country
by Truong Anh Tuan
Dear all FAD APAC Singapore 2015 participants,
Thank you all for your participating to FAD APAC Singapore 2015.
As you know, one of the main purposes [1] of this FAD is to make budget
planning for all events and activities in APAC next FY2017.
FAD is coming. We have just a week left to it.
So please take a while to discuss with your fellows to list events and
activities in each your APAC country to Events page [2].
You should consider previous events/activities, especially ones in the
last FY2016 [3] to make your list.
Another thing should be considered is the strategy to improve the
community activities. As it is also the other main purposes of this FAD
I suggest you write those ideas down then bring them to discuss about
a better strategy/plan for APAC for growing up the community.
Any more ideas, comments are welcome.
There are only two days for us to complete these two big purposes so we
should try our best to do it before.
See you all next weekend.
Rgds,
Tuan
