Really..? Haha.. Is there a free media distributor for Fedora 9 in the U.S? (Cuz I had to pay last time for the Release Party, luckily it was covered by FAMScO) If so, where are they..?

Hi Ankur,
Here is the clarification you need
1) This site is in support of free media program, not an individual/different group.
2) As there are less ambassadors in western region of india, perticularly in gujarat. we are getting more requests for free media and its difficult to track all the requests so we have created this site.
3) This link is *only for End users who want to collect their media from us* .
Pls contact me/nilesh sir for any further clarification,if required.

When the rest of Latin America will have this kind of service?
I know that Brazil have some FreeMedia Service but is not the most used languaje in Latin America, so; sometimes is not properly to give a Spanish user a DVD with a Brazilian cover.
Could we make a generic Spanish media to serve the rest of latin america? (even Mexico and Central America)

Agreed. :)
There are 2 things that are puzzling me about this: http://www.vglug.info/get-fedora-dvd
First of all, having a nice web form to ask for free media is great. Couldn't we have that in the Fedora Infrastructure, instead of spreading it in each countries ? This would give a bit more credibility to the program cause "Hey, I don't know who those vglug guys are, I want a Fedora media, can I trust them ?" ;)
It looks like there's already something more central on the wiki: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FreeMedia
Adding a nice webapp with a form to automate the procedure that is described on this page could be much better than doing this stuff each one in a different location.
Second, we're talking about Free Media program right ? Not about the vendors who want to distribute Fedora for profit (correct me if I'm wrong).
However, the site specifies: "We will be charging you for the media and for shipping and handling expenses. (CD-Rs.15, DVD-Rs.25, S&H-Rs.35)"
Charging for the shippingand the media ? o_O
The same wiki page says: "Fedora Free Media Program is a volunteer initiative under Fedora Distribution Project that aims to distribute Fedora Media (DVDs) for free to individuals who can't afford to buy or download."
This one says: (https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Distribution/FreeMedia/Information) "# Limit to only 1 DVD per request per person per release to cut cost and time. # Please note this is a volunteer initiative by local Fedora Ambassadors or Contributors who are willing to burn DVDs and ship them with their own resources (DVD writer, blank media, shipping materials and postage). # This means they can only ship a limited number of DVDs per week. You can expect them to send out an average of 2 DVDs a week. # Your Free Media request might not be fulfilled at this time as this program depends on their own time and expenses."
So it looks to me that your site should be more something like https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Distribution/OnlineVendors
Maybe that's what you wanted to talk about, but as the subject of the mail is "Submit your request for Free Fedora DVD",...

Well , I'd suggest for working with the existing process of official FreeMedia program, and not creating a separate branch (that ll be confusing)
The current process is integrated (not best automated though) and thats why it is important, you can accept requests and contribute without creating additional forms and stop points.
ofcource you can keep your own database of requests.

It is perfectly clear you want to help, and it is possible to have a India specific (country specific) request page so that it is easier to handle things at that level, but it should be an official one, otherwise as i said it will be confusing.

Thanx for your suggestion.
Our idea is to provide around 500 dvd's per month. ( I hope we can maintain it in long run).
For me it is difficult to track the record of the mail.
So that why we created this.
If it not suitable with fedora ambassador project we will close the form from our community website.
More suggestion are welcom.

hi !
Since we cannot handle over a limited number of request per month .but quest for dvd is still there .
I feel what vlug guys have done is a good inititiative . if this can be done in regional basis on all countries having bandwidth problem and if we integrate them to freemedia program , i guess we can cover more request in a whole lot organised way .
My personal experience : http://subhodipbiswas.wordpress.com/2008/08/06/sending-a-freemedia-dvd/
If somebody has solution why not try implementing it .
just a thought tho .
yes guys , its a great initiative , ..... ideas like this might help us remove the one disadvantage we have when compared to utnubu ( or so people believe ) , that we can't provide free media as good as they do ( good in the sense the time and availability of delivery ) , ....
but all these activities need to be more centralised , they can be regionalised but have to be under a central authority ( for credibility issues ) , ... and are extremely useful in countries like india ........
as far as my knowledge goes , Fedora is greatly popular in india because it comes in a DVD( DVD is the most popular one ) which has everything you would ever need !
please do correct me if i am wrong , ....

yes guys , its a great initiative , ..... ideas like this might help us remove the one disadvantage we have when compared to utnubu ( or so people believe ) , that we can't provide free media as good as they do ( good in the sense the time and availability of delivery ) , ....
but all these activities need to be more centralised , they can be regionalised but have to be under a central authority ( for credibility issues ) , ... and are extremely useful in countries like india ........
as far as my knowledge goes , Fedora is greatly popular in india because it comes in a DVD( DVD is the most popular one ) which has everything you would ever need !
please do correct me if i am wrong , ....

I feel what vlug guys have done is a good inititiative . if this can be done in regional basis on all countries having bandwidth problem and if we integrate them to freemedia program , i guess we can cover more request in a whole lot organised way .

If somebody has solution why not try implementing it .
just a thought tho .

I hope we must have local contacts registered somewhere. So that people don't have to move in the darkness.
And Is there something Fedora Admin Team doing?
I can provide DVD and CDs to people who need them, but I might run out of them if so much need is there!
We must come up with a more precise and long lasting solution. All local level fedora and Linux user groups around the globe must unite and register them somewhere as support system for fedora.
We can then spread the word brilliantly.
I don't know but I guess this will be great.

There's no admin team label per say, but there is a marketing group. Maybe contact there, and give them your ideas, concerns irc.freenode.net #fedora-mktg or the marketing mailing-list http://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-marketing-list
I can provide DVD and CDs to people who need them, but I might run out of them if so much need is there!
Theres a whole group of volunteers that can help, only do what you can..

Fedora is not in competition with any other distro, different strokes for different folks.
Apologies for correct netiquette

I understand your messages. :)
Nehal and Nilesh, more power to the both of you and your efforts for spreading Fedora 9 to the Western region of India. Most certainly, that is a great task. :)
I see your efforts as admirable indeed. :v)

Hi Ankur,
Here is the clarification you need
1) This site is in support of free media program, not an individual/different group.
2) As there are less ambassadors in western region of india, perticularly in gujarat. we are getting more requests for free media and its difficult to track all the requests so we have created this site.
3) This link is only for End users who want to collect their media from us.
Pls contact me/nilesh sir for any further clarification,if required.
Thanks and Regards, Nehal Dattani.

hi,need to clarify.. Do we (people who have volunteered to provide free media by accepting requests) have to use this site or is it for people who need free media (ones using the form) ??
