Just double-click a folder with the middle mouse button.

your not using the browser mode 3. Tabbed browsing (files/folders or web) is "hot" these days
The browser already clutters its window with a lot toolbars, buttons and gadgets. With tabs it clutters the window even more.
- It feels so.. old (windows 95? 3.11?)
The browser view feels so... Windows XP.
But seriously, who cares? If you dislike the folder/browser view, just configure it the way you like it. How often do you need to reconfigure your Gnome? My Gnome settings are a couple of years old now.
then you keep your dist long. i mostly install (or re-install) my linux once every 2 months on several pc's and that's to try out new releases of various distributions. then changing the same things all over again (going that way for years now) is getting irritating.
