Hi All,
I would like some clarification from folks here regarding updating gparted on EPEL-5 and EPEL-6.
The version of gparted shipped in EPEl-5 is 0.4.8 and EPEL-6 is 0.6.0 while the current upstream version is 0.19.1 (which I recently built in EPEL-7).
Mike Fleetwood, who is a gparted developer, has opened a bug (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1133315) suggesting that gparted be updated in both EPEL-5 and EPEL-6 since the current version fixes lot of major bugs. As I understand it, major versions updates are permitted if such an update fixes major issues. In this case, the update would fix a big list of problem.
I tend to agree with Mike on updating but I would appreciate if people on comment on this.
Thanks! Mukundan.

So, IMHO the big thing to take into account: Is the new version incompatible with the old one? Will users have to adjust code or scripts, or are the old arguments, etc still all good?
Additionally, Are the bugs things that might cause dataloss or other severe things? That would also weigh in some.

I posed the same question to Mike (upstream devel). He has informed that the user experience will be the same between the versions. I have used in EL-6 and Fedora and have not been "surprised" by anything. But, Mike also confirms that EL-5 should not have any problems either.
Additionally, Are the bugs things that might cause dataloss or other severe things? That would also weigh in some.

Yup! The newer version fixes many severe issues and that the reason I want to update EL-5 as well.
Thanks for the reply! :)
Mukundan.
