When I enable desktop effects in current rawhide, all I get is a solid white screen. c-a-bs or <enter> gets me out.
How do I fix this?
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV630 [Radeon HD 2600 Series]
same result using radeonhd driver.
device section of xorg.conf:
Section "Device" Identifier "Videocard0" Option "AccelMethod" "EXA" Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy" EndSection
Any ideas or suggestions?

Neither radeonhd nor radeon provide 3D support for your card (which is required for compiz), starting with compiz-0.7.8-15 it should refuse to start in this cases (i.e you won't get a white screen but it will fall back to metacity).

Hmm... compiz-0.7.8-15 and -16 fail to start on my Intel controller too: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07) 00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)
Works fine with compiz-0.7.8-14. This expected? Do I need to pass some "magic" settings somewhere?

Looks like I've had 'better' luck.
My experience is that on my laptop the KMS stuff appears to be sensitive to the particulars of the monitor: I connect my X200 laptop to 2 different monitors, one works fine "out of the box" (with KMS, gdm/gnome, compiz), while the other doesn't.
For the one that doesn't, booting with "nomodeset" makes gdm/gnome work for me, and booting with "nomodeset nopat" seems to make gdm/gnome and compiz work for me. At least up to compiz-0.7.8-14.
Have you tried that?

-15 is broken but -16 should work fine. Can you attach the output of glxinfo and LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 glxinfo ?

FWIW, I think most people prefer unified diffs...at least I've always found 'em a lot easier to read, and it seems to be the most commonly used format in development circles.
diff -u gives unified diffs.

It's a Intel G41 chipset with the x3500??? graphics card, and while I'm no it's not working right, I'm wondering about whether 3d is working at all (I get FPS around 300 in a default glxgears instance, which is worse than my wifes 3 year old i915 chipset (which gets 400fps and runs compiz)
I'll try -17 later today.

Works fine with compiz-0.7.8-14. This expected? Do I need to pass some "magic" settings somewhere?
-15 is broken but -16 should work fine. Can you attach the output of glxinfo and LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 glxinfo ?
This is broken for me with -14. (I get the white screen)
I've installed -16 from koji and I now no longer get the white screen, but it fails to start compiz with a message of that sort.
Attached are the two outputs you asked for numbered in the order they were asked for.
Try -17, and what kind of hardware is this?
I installed -17 and now I'm back to getting white screens when I try to enable compiz. Argghhh! (Not that compiz worked the other way either, but it still feels like a step backwards.)
