Fresh install from DVD
1. During install had error messages “Error opening /dev/sda. No medium found.” This occurred for all four slots (sda, sdb, sdc, sdd) in USB memory card reader. This has never occurred before. Is it useful to probe these devices during install, perhaps in case they are USB drives to which an install might occur? I'm not sure the error messages are useful even then.
2. Selected all 3 software categories plus Fedora Extras. Could not continue install due to message:
“An error occurred unmounting the CD. Please make sure you're not accessing /mnt/source from the shell on tty2 and then click OK to retry.”
I restarted the install and left the Fedora Extras unchecked this time. Installation proceeded as expected, and customization of packages worked fine.
Post Install setup went flawlessly.
3. I have a zip drive, in which I have a disk. I clicked on the desktop Computer icon and then Zip drive icon. A nautilus window opened with / contents instead of zip drive contents. Second attempt opened Zip contents. This is repeatable on reboot, but not on logout/login.
4. There is no longer a check box in the nautilus Properties > Behavior tab to set nautilus to open in browser format by default. This means each time I want a browser (95% of the time) I need to right-click and select an option. Is there another way to set the default?
5. The desktop Create Launcher dialog no longer has a URL type. However, using the file type and setting the Location to an internet URl does create a proper launcher.
6. Overall appearance is great. The gdm login screen is very sharp, though some would judge it to be foreboding.

The error dialogs aren't supposed to pop up -- clumens tracked down why it was happening yesterday, it was just a smidge too late for the freeze.

Yeah, selecting Extras on a CD install right now isn't likely to work. I unfortunately ran out of time with traveling last week :/ If there's interest in testing it, I can put together an updates.img to try to let people test and see if things work

There's an option in gconf I believe

Yes, once I realized I hadn't selected gconf-editor for installation, installed it with yum, found my way through the XML tree, and checked the box, browser mode is now default on my FC6T3 system.
However, I think it is a serious omission to not have this as a selection in the nautilus Edit > Preferences > Behavior tab as it is in FC5 and as I believe it was in FC6T2 - too late to check since I overwrote it with FC6T3.
The first harm this omission will cause is create another round of argument about spatial mode being forced on people who do not like it. I do like spatial mode for some uses, but after using it as default for more than a year, I recently decided that browser mode was more useful to me.
Do I need to report this as a bug against nautilus?
Thanks.

I'll answer myself. This checkbox most likely requires that gconf-editor be installed. It makes sense that it is so. The checkbox now appears in the Behavior tab after installing gconf-editor.

There is no such dependency. And it seems very weird that something entierly unrelated like installing a package would affect the nautilus configuration dialog. Are you sure it wasn't there before installing gconf-editor?

I am now sure that I must have overlooked the checkbox item when I first looked for it. I just did a fresh install as close as possible the same as the previous one, and indeed the checkbox item is there without installing gconf-editor.
I apologize for my inaccuracy and the false alarm and will look for some kind of brain enhancement pills to take.
Thanks.

I'm glad that this is still in preferences for selection. I hope that the always use text-entry location bar is there as well.
One thing that I do not understand is putting preferences selections in gconf-editor instead of the application you want to get to work as you may desire. Also, why is gconf-editor mot installed by default if it is needed to configure sanity into applications?
I'm still downloading the DVD image so I did not install test 3 yet. I hope that the choices are still there in preferences > behavior.

Hi Jim,
Please do me a favor and check whether gconf-editor is selected by default when you do the install. I suspect I caused my own problem by deselecting it, but can't remember that I did for sure. I agree that the application itself should have sufficient facilities to provide the selection mechanism. The "always use text-entry location bar" preference is there if gconf-editor is installed.
Thanks.

I'll check to see if gconf-editor is installed by default. I believe that the last clean install did not pull in this program. If the choice only shows up with gconf-editor installed, something is a little out of the ordinary.

gconf-editor is not in the default install for FC6. But the presence or absence of gconf-editor has no influence on what preferences are visible. And in fact, I see the "always open in browser window" checkbox in a default install without gconf-editor.

Hey, it's not nice to make an old coot think he's losing his mind! I tested your statement by removing gconf-editor and rebooting, and guess what? The checkbox is still there!
I swear I was sober and lucid the first time I went looking for it to get rid of the spatial view, and could not find it. If I have time tomorrow, I'll try a new install and try to duplicate the package selection as closely as I can. If it isn't there this time, I'll make a screen shot. If it is there, I'll ....
Thanks. Gerry

Well.... it is also in mine now that I have installed the gconf-editor package in order to set this feature. That dialog must depend on gconf-editor to set this feature - actually makes sense to me.
I suspect it was my bad - I probably deselected gconf-editor while making detailed software selections.
Thanks.

After a fresh install system-configure-[display,soundcard] started and interacted with the user (but didn't really work, but thats another bug report) when launched from text mode.
After applying the 100+ or so updates both progs fail to start or segfault when launched from text mode.
Neither (especially the display setup) should require X to be running prior to launch.

I saw this during first post-install startup and after the 100+ updates. This happens with SELinux enabled and disabled.

- intel 82801G (ICH7 Family) Sound card is silent (same problem under FC6T2). lspci: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)
A few weeks back there was a long thread on either fedora or fedora-test list about the sound on an Acer laptop not working. There was a solution posted. Iirc the solution is getting a recent alsa version and installing that one.
- X only appears to be able to use 1024x768 resolution. LCD is 1280x800 native. No matter what I do with "system-configure- display", I can't get it to run higher resolution. This worked correctly under FC6T2 once I told it the LCD capabilities.
X does not even come up if I don't add something likethis to xorg.conf in the videocard section:
Options MonitorLayout "LVDS,NONE"
Maybe try that since 1024x768 looks like the max output of the tv out.
Regards, Patrick

The default i810 video driver can only set modes to those listed in the video BIOS, and you bought a machine with a sufficiently broken BIOS to not list the native panel size.
You can either yell at Acer to fix their video BIOS, or try using the 'intel' driver instead, by changing the line
Driver "i810"
in xorg.conf to
Driver "intel"
If this works for you, please post the output of 'lspci -v -n -s 0:2' so I can add this machine to the whitelist for the new driver.

Thanks, that rattled my memory.
Running the '915resolution' prog from http://www.geocities.com/stomljen/download.html in a rc. startup to hack a proper video bios mode line lets X choose the correct resolution.

Using the intel driver is a better solution and will work better with things like suspend/resume :)

Given that we are never, ever, going to ship 915resolution in Core, I would appreciate it if you'd test the 'intel' driver as well, since the next major release of the i810 driver is expected to be based on that branch.
