Possibly a bit late for you, but are you using an ATI Radeon card?
The reason I ask is that you may be suffering from the same problem as me, see https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=170873

Yes, it is an ATI Radeon Mobility U1
Reading your bug report, the symptoms seem to be different than yours. I had decent X running and 3D support.
This problem made X fail for both the radeon and tries with the vesa.
s-c-display errors out, but you do get a light blue screen, but the terminal shows error with lines in s-c-display. gdm tries to respawn. Running just X leaves a black screen, but appears to be in graphics mode.
I figure that when FC5 test 1 comes out, a fresh install is in line. Since it is this close to the test phase, compiled and installed X should suffice until then.

It is a problem of fontconfig. Revert to the one in fc4 or wait some hours for the new one to hit download mirrors of rawhide.

Thanks for revealing the package that prevented X from starting. since the compiled tar.gz monolythic version of X seems have better looking fonts mostly. (smaller fonts with easier to read format) When I removed Xorg-x11 and it took out 45 packages, it left gnome applications mostly installed. From the twm terminal, I can run gnome-panel & and get all the launchers. (heck of a lot better fonts than with the rpms for X installed.
Regarding updates hitting rawhide, I thought development was frozen. Is development still pushing updates?
