Hi,
Some initial spots/impressions of Fedora Core Test 2.
- Doing a workstation install but de-selecting the games section, still leaves you with kdelibs being installed.
- Grub boot screen still has messy layout.
- Graphical boot is much faster - Nice! :) Still doesn't look too appealing though.
- Beep when graphical login appears is just bloody annoying, but I could live with it! :)
- Main part of Gnome panel goes black for around two seconds when loading up. This never affected the same crash test dummy box with RH 9 or Severn beta 1.
- 'Desktop' folder in 'home/username' under Gnome 2.4 is a pain because it's case sensitive. Not everyone uses upper case in directory naming and the ability to rename it 'desktop' or even hide it would be nice.
- Desktop icons way way spread - see:
http://www.philipwyett.dsl.pipex.com/fedora/testing/default_desktop.png
Cleaning up by name does not rectify this problem. :(
- Alot of the apps when started maximised have a problem in the top right corner of the screen - see:
http://www.philipwyett.dsl.pipex.com/fedora/testing/moz_started_max.png
- 1 pixel wide notification area on panel is well known about!
- 'Add/Remove Applications' still doesn't work for installs.
- Mouse console services shutdown permanently fails at shutdown/reboot.
- 'md: Recovery thread got woken up' - This thing seriously needs a line of it's own. :)
I'll keep my powder dry on Gaim bugs as I think Havoc will soon rawhide 0.69.
Regards
Phil

I recall reading that Gnome 2.4 had the new feature of fixing icons to a grid, so Cleanup by name may simply snap them to the closest grid. Look for desktop settings somewhere, hopefully that's an easy option that you don't have to use gconf for.
I would like to note that Align to Grid was something present in the Red Hat releases a few years ago in the early days of Gnome. I forget what the default window manager was. Probably Enlightenment, but it might have been Sawbox/Sawfish. I have missed it ever since and am glad to see it back.

I noticed the same thing. Haven't looked yet to see about assigning/changing grids.
But I also noticed that on the gnome-panel, when running the weather-applet that if you make the panel smaller in size (height wise), the weather applet doesn't shrink with it. It stays big, therefore the temp is below the panel and barely see the top of it.

Idea is to let blind users know when to start typing, IIRC.

Chris Blizzard owns gaim, don't try to load me up with more work. ;-)

I installed severn test 2 last night and am trying to use up2date. I keep getting:
Problem registering system: Error Message: Your account does not have access to any channels matching (release='0.94' ,arch='i686-redhat-linux') If you have a registration number, please register with it first at http://www.redhat.com/apps/activate/ and then try again.
Error Class Code: 19 Error Class Info: Architecture and OS
Should I be able to use up2date with severn? I am a paid subscriber for rh9.
Thanks, Wiley

I think the new Severn beta RHN channel is not yet activated,

I'm waiting to see what's in the changelog for 0.69. I see a tar.gz file up in the download section, but very little other information. 0.68 _is_ in the tree, waiting to be pushed to the public.

The best way to see the changelog is to browse the CVS tree in SourceForge.
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/gaim/gaim/ChangeLog?rev=1.786&view...
is the version from the 0.69 release.
Among other important changes, MSN support is updated to the MSN Protocol version 9, SSL support was added (through NSS or gnutls), Jabber supports SSL, Contact (aka Meta-Contact, aka Buddy Mergin) support was added, the perl signal problems were fixed, Yahoo support was improved (although right now has stopped working due to Yahoo changing their protocol again), and, as always, a bunch of new translations.

Another reason I love it is that now I can tell when my headless boxes have completed booting :-)

Why run X on a headless box? Just curious.

Well, it's not *really* headless. It's just one of two machines that can be connected to a single monitor, none of which are frequently used as desktops (although they may), and are more often used as build servers and backup storage.
The beep is also nice to tell when the laptop in the living room finished booting :-)

To run remote, graphical apps, for example. I use kdm with XDMCP enabled on several boxes, and then run "Xnvc -query localhost" on top to get a remote GUI.
In that case, you're often better off running GDM without a local X server. GDM can be configued to XDMCP-only mode very easily: just comment out "0=Standard" in the [servers] section of /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf, and enable XDMCP under the [xdmcp] section. Woohoo, you're done.
You then have a box with local command-line only (you can still "startx" or "X -query localhost" to get a graphical session) but you can get GUI sessions remotely with "X -query targethost" or "Xnest -query targethost". I use this configuration on the LTSP terminal server at work. X seems to be the #1 reliability issue with linux, and I'm happy to keep it off my servers when possible.

Yes, that was the reason I suspected the beep was implemented for. A good idea and no worries - ater a while I doubt I'll even notice it. :)

Oops - Sorry! :) Ok, I'll wait for Chris Blizzard to rawhide it.
