I was puzzled by those errors too (also happens on RH9 if you enable smartd) and they only happen when you have a removable device with no medium in it...

Nothing too puzzling about it; smartd monitors drives and try to predict if they are about to fail; it would thus have problems with empty removable devices.
One wonders if it actually can recognise failing CDs. Anyone has coasters they can test with smartd?
