With today's rawhide, adding nomodeset to the kernel command line doesn't seem to work. The Gigabyte ga-ep45-ud3p with Nvidia 9600gt still pops into a mode that my Dell 24 incher cannot display on its DVI input.
Exactly where does "nomodeset" go?

I always just "append" this to the boot line ...
Suppose if you are editing grub.conf, you would put it after (or replace) "rhgb quiet"

try nouveau.modeset=0 .
