Dear all, gnome-mount -d /dev/fd0 does not mount floppies as it should. To mount a floppy, I have to become root and issue # mkdir -p /media/floppy # mount /dev/fd0 /media/floppy
[olivares@localhost ~]$ gnome-mount -d /dev/fd0 gnome-mount 0.4.0.2006.07.24 [olivares@localhost ~]$ gnome-mount -d --device /dev/fd0 gnome-mount 0.4.0.2006.07.24 [olivares@localhost ~]$ ls /media/floppy/ -l total 0 [olivares@localhost ~]$
I added /dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto pamconsole, exec, noauto, managed 0 0 to /etc/fstab as root and it still does not work.
[olivares@localhost ~]$ cat /etc/fstab /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 / ext3 defaults 1 1 LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 defaults 1 2 devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0 tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0 proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 sysfs /sys sysfs defaults 0 0 /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01 swap swap defaults 0 0 /dev/hda3 swap swap defaults 0 0 /dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto pamconsole,exec,noauto,managed 0 0 [olivares@localhost ~]$ gnome-mount -d /dev/fd0 gnome-mount 0.4.0.2006.07.24 [olivares@localhost ~]$ gnome-mount -d --device /dev/fd0 gnome-mount 0.4.0.2006.07.24 [olivares@localhost ~]$ gnome-mount -help gnome-mount 0.4.0.2006.07.24 [olivares@localhost ~]$ gnome-mount --help Usage: gnome-mount [OPTION...] - GNOME mount

I understand that floppies are becoming obsolete, but floppies should still work. What should I do?

Antonio

This looks like a new bug. If you will browse what is under "Computer" icon on your desktop then floppy is no longer there. Right? Hence gnome-mount has no chance to find it. Anybody with an idea which component fails here? hal? gnome-vfs?
Trying the command above from the root account I see now:
(gnome-mount:7073): Bonobo-CRITICAL **: bonobo_object_unref: assertion `BONOBO_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
If non-root then it just prints its version (nobody knows what for) and silently fails. Adding '-v' does not change anything.

I'm getting this in my kernel 2.6.17-1.2187_FC5 dmesg log
dmesg | grep floppy ide-floppy driver 0.99.newide floppy0: no floppy controllers found
and I'm pretty sure that machine has a floppy drive.

With 2.6.18-1.2679.fc6 I see
# dmesg | grep floppy ide-floppy driver 0.99.newide PM: Adding info for platform:floppy.0
and
# dmesg | grep fd0 Floppy drive(s): fd0 is 1.44M
and still no floppy is recognized by a desktop even if 'lshal' seems to know about it; but not about a block device /dev/fd0 so maybe this is really a hal problem?
