Mike My funk is not with Perl per se, but with the continuing proliferation of dependencies on which the target package is not really dependent. kdesdk gets along perfectly well on other distributions without perl.

s/perfectly well/mostly well, provided you don't try to use the functionality that relies on perl/ :)
Now that you mention it, wow, many, *many* kde depend on perl. I'd be interested to find out if anyone truly was able to make a kde functional without perl... hmm...
