I am running 8.0
System is up and running, I want to add open office.
All the rpm files are on the hard drive as files (not CD images).
I would like to run some installer that will resolve all the dependencies and install open office.
red-config-packages seems to be hung up on wanting a CD or a CD image. Surly there is a simple way to do this...
While on this subject, is there a way to get up2date or some such to update this set of files?

try this out but your gonna have to get your hands dirty on the command line ... (all commands to type will be in bold - comments start with a #) *su *#type in password for root user on machine ... #cd to the directory that your openoffice files are in ... *rpm -Uvh <name of openoffice file that finishes with the extension .rpm>* #(without the < *>)* #this command will tell you what it is doing as it installs the rpm (same thing as the gui but with more details)
if all went well - openoffice should be installed and it should have been added to your menus. If not you can launch the wordprocessor by typing *swriter* in a console and it should start up.
p.s. - not sure this is the right place to post for newbie questions - i thought this list was for the new rhl beta stuff?

It's not rhl-beta ou rhl-devel.
But he use Psyche (RH8.0) and the right place is : http://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/psyche-list

The problem is that there are about a dozen or so dependencies that need to be loaded/ installed also. Using this method, I would need to track each of those down and install them, and they don't have names that match the *.rpm names.

If you have not done so already, install the rpmdb-redhat package and run "rpm -Uvh --aid <openoffice-rpm-file>", maybe this could do the trick.

Your best bet is to get APT 4 RPM and use it (or something similiar, like yum). Then you just move the opensoffice rpms to apt's cache directory and then type:
apt-get update apt-get install openoffice
The system will examine the dependancies and if there are no missing dependancies then it will install the files. If there are missing dependancies it will inform you of them and ask if you want to download them.

Update up2date with : https://rhn.redhat.com/help/latest-up2date.pxt
Launch rhn_register to register the machine.
Install OpenOffice # up2date --install openoffice
