3C509B and Upgrade to FC3
by Gordon Keehn
I just upgraded a running FC2 system to FC3, and everything seemed
to go smoothly except that I lost network connectivity via a slightly
aged but still functional 3C509B NIC. I've tried reactivating it via
the Network config program, but while its existence is acknowledged, it
doesn't respond to my requests to start interfacing. Since the only
access to the world beyond my home office is via that network card, it
reduces the value of that system substantially.
Has anyone else run into (and gone beyond) this problem?
Cheers,
Gordon Keehn

overheated laptop
by sly
i have 2 laptops: a dell inspiron 8000 (p3) and a dell inspiron 5100
(p4). the p3 has fc2 and runs perfect! on the other side the p4 had fc2
and had overheating problems. now i installed fc3 and it still has
overheating problems. the fen runs continuously and the temperature is
at 68C average. sometimes it reaches the critical 80C and it shuts off.
i wasn't able to find any helpful info on the web or i just didn't know
where to look. any helpful info would be appreciated.

[FC3] Resetting Nautilus windows
by P Jones
Hi All;
A general GNOME question here; is there a way to set all the Nautilus
file browser window back to their freshly installed GNOME positions?
When clicking on the "user's Home" icon on the desktop, the window lands
in the middle of the desktop. Then, when clicking on a folder in that
window, the next window appears on top of the previous window, just to
the right and slightly lower, and so on and so on for subsequent
windows. But, if one takes one of those windows and moves it to another
location, it will always appear in the new location. I would like to
reset something to make them all land where they did before I messed
around with them.
And yes, I have tried the "Reset View to Defaults" option under the View
menu, and it doesn't do what I'm looking to do.
Thanks,
-P

control characters
by Xiaotian Sun
Hi,
After I upgraded to FC3, my control characters, like arrows, delete,
backspace, etc., are messed up. They work fine in terminal itself,
are messed up in programs, like less, ftp, yum, ... bascially any
interactive command-line programs.
How to fix it?
Thanks,
Xiaotian

Does FC3 fix the earlier SMP lock / hang problems?
by Peter Loron
I've run into the SMP lock / hang issue with FC1. Is this issue resolved
in FC3? The machine in question is a production box, so I don't really
want to risk a repeat of the previous hang behavior. I've been running
in uniproc mode for a long while and have had good reliability, but
having that second processor in use would be very nice. A scan through
the list archives didn't turn up any discussion on this issue after late
last year...
Thanks.

OT: fighting rbl's
by Thomas Zehetbauer
Hi,
I have been repeatedly affected by RBL providers incorrectly listing my
static IP address in their dial-up ranges causing my messages to be
rejected by the servers of several clueless wannabe administrators.
What makes things really worse is that none of these lists is even close
to being well maintained and it usually takes weeks to get removed.
I first thought of a cronjob to nag the removal contact about once per
hour, but I doubt this account does ever get read.
Currently I am trying to use all contacts I can find for the RBL
provider and recipient domain and ask them to unlist my IP and/or stop
using the broken RBL.
Unfortunately some of those bastards even use their own RBL to prevent
such requests from getting through and I wonder what else I can do.
Launch wget with an invalid URL once per second to put my removal
request in their httpd log?
Reciprocally blocking their domain from delivering here?
Any other ideas?
Tom

OT: Apache .htaccess question
by Ashley M. Kirchner
Looking for some gurus here. I have the following snippet in my
.htaccess file:
SetEnvIfNoCase Remote_Host "some.domain.com" ref_ok=1
<FilesMatch "\.(gif|jpe?g|png|css|inc|GIF|JPE?G|PNG|CSS|INC|js)">
Order allow,deny
Allow from env=ref_ok
</FilesMatch>
...which effectively prevents anyone from remote linking to any of
those files anywhere on my web site (including those in sub-directories)
except for 'some.domain.com'. However, I want to _exclude_ a directory
from that blanket matching:
$web-soot/.htaccess
$web-root/thx/ <-- I want to exclude this directory and
everything else that may be below it.
Any ideas?

is sysfs filesystem hardcoded to mount at /sys?
by Robert P. J. Day
is it mandatory that the sysfs filesystem always be mounted at /sys?
that is, do all processes needing access to that filesystem invariably
refer to /sys as its location?
