Blue screen in Fedora
by taehyun nam
Hellow all,
I have a fedora-version blue screen. Yes, the blue
screen as of Windows.
Two days ago, I updated some utilities using Synaptic
and tries to shut down the computer. However, it did
not shutdown and got stuck with a blue screen with the
rolling sand watch that used to give a way to
text-mode. So, I just push the button to turn it off.
When I turn on the computer the next time, booting
went well, doing starting utilities and so on until it
stop right before the log-in screen. And it again was
the blue screen with the watch where it stoped.
It doesn't boot from CD-ROM; Booting disk didn't help
either.
Is there any one who can help me with this?
I'm really frustrated and my wife is mad and demands
Windows back.
ssh was blocked so that my friend couldn't help me.
I'd like to know at least how to let ssh go through.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Reading Live SMB Files
by Adam Voigt
It had never bothered me before, but I was opening a PDF document for
someone off the file server and it told me that "xpdf" couldn't read the
file off SMB shares, so I had to copy it to my desktop to open it.
Someone watching me do this asked why I had to, and I didn't really have
a reason, so I thought I'd ask here.
Why is it exactly you can't directly open files off SMB shares like you
can on Windows? I'm sure it's probably something simple like Nautilus
just uses "smbclient" instead of mounting the share or something like
that, but why couldn't it just copy the file to /tmp when you try and
access it, to make it more fluid browsing?

Two RAID 0 questions
by Allan Metts
Hi all,
I want to maximize disk throughput by using Fedora's software RAID 0 on a
plain-jane single-processor machine with 7200 RPM IDE drives. Two
questions come to mind:
--1-- Do I need to put the two drives on separate controllers? Right now,
the CDROM drive is the master drive on the secondary controller. It seems
cleaner to me to put the two hard drives as master & slave on the primary
controller -- but am I sacrificing performance here?
--2-- Does RAID 0 require identical drive sizes and geometries like RAID 1
does? Or is it possible to span drives of differing sizes?
Thanks in advance,
Allan

nvidia driver question
by thedogfarted
I wonder if i should install nvidia display driver form nvidia.com
instead of my current driver from livna.
i have now installed following rpms:
nvidia-glx-1.0.4620-0.lvn.18.1
kernel-module-nvidia-2.4.22-1.2174.nptl-1.0.4620-0.lvn.18.1
nvidia-glx-devel-1.0.4620-0.lvn.18.1
and now i've downloaded NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run
The reason why i want to install is that i still have Mesa's GL header
files in /usr/include. If i remember correctly, nvidia's install
replaced them with their own, and this is what i need.
Why they weren't replaced when i installed driver from rpm? Can i safely
just get the nvidia's GL header files and replace the existing ones?
