Re: ProFTP login horror

Sorry for top posting but I'm stuck with Lotus Notes at work...anyway,
Do you have SELinux enabled? Depending on the context settings you have
set in SELinux can really lock down a service. Try disabling it if you
have it enabled.

I haven't used proftpd for a while. Does it have any security
options (like not running as root or living in a chroot jail)
that would keep it from reading your shadow password file?
And out of curiosity, why are you using it instead of vsftpd?

ProFTP login horror
by korgull
Hi,
I've set up the server and it is running, but when I try to login I get "530
Login incorrect".
It's like it doesn't know the password of the user that tries to login, but
authentication is done by PAM and it's a normal user that is known on the
system who's trying to login.
I expect proFTP to use the same username/password in this case, or is my
expectation wrong ?
Any hints to what I might have done wrong/forgotten in my setup ?
Regards,
Marcel

Apologies
by Tony Dietrich
To anyone that's been receiving multiple copies of emails from me.
I only realised tonight that I've got KMail setup to send from both accounts.
Its a fairly recent upgrade to FC4, and I'm still settling into it.
Mea culpa.

newbie's question: Why .i386.rpm and .x86_64.rpm can have the exact same files?
by Robinson Tiemuqinke
Hi,
I'm installing several AMD 64bit machines, and I've
also installed 32bit compatibility for legacy
programs.
But unfortunately, I've found a "strange" phenomenon:
a pair of same name packages, one is i386 version and
another is x86_64 version, can be installed at the
same time without confliction, although they contains
the same set of files, either exectible binaries and
libraries or simple documents.
Let's give an example (mysql) listed below, bith
mysql.i386 and mysql.x86_64 includes /usr/bin/mysql/
but are installed without confliction.
Then I got confused here (not FC4 OS). :) If I just
run 'mysql' from command line, which version (i386,
x86_64) of mysql will be run? If I remove one version,
say mysql.x86_64, then the file /usr/bin/mysql will
get deleted? or it just downgrade to 32bit version
only? If the latter is the case, then where does FC4
Linux save the 32bit version binary?
My questions seems pretty riduclous because I'm a
newbie to 64bit world. Plaese help.
I will be very appreciated if someone can give me
some reference sites about this 32bit|64bit rpm
introduction.
[user02@testserver01 ~]# rpm -q --queryformat
'%{name}-%{version}-%{release}.%{arch}\n' mysql
mysql-4.1.16-1.FC4.1.x86_64
mysql-4.1.16-1.FC4.1.i386
[user02@testserver01 ~]# rpm -ql mysql.x86_64 |head -5
/etc/ld.so.conf.d/mysql-x86_64.conf
/etc/my.cnf
/usr/bin/msql2mysql
/usr/bin/mysql
/usr/bin/mysql_config
[user02@testserver01 ~]# rpm -ql mysql.i386 |head -5
/etc/ld.so.conf.d/mysql-i386.conf
/etc/my.cnf
/usr/bin/msql2mysql
/usr/bin/mysql
/usr/bin/mysql_config

How to make Fedora4 build threadsafe for Postgresql?
by Matt England
I received the following problems while trying to build postgresql-8.1.3 on
FedoraCore4. Can anyone provide any feedback or suggestions for help?

For what it's worth, this seems to be pertinent part of config.log:
[...]
configure:16424: checking for the pthreads library -lpthreads
configure:16462: gcc -o conftest -O2 -Wall -Wmissing-prototypes
-Wpointer-arith -Winline -Wdeclaration-after-statement -Wendif-labels
-fno-strict-aliasing -D_GNU_SOURCE conftest.c -lpthreads -lz
-lreadline -ltermcap -lcrypt -lresolv -lnsl -ldl -lm -lbsd >&5
conftest.c: In function 'main':
conftest.c:125: warning: 'th' is used uninitialized in this function
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lpthreads
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
configure:16468: $? = 1
configure: failed program was:
| /* confdefs.h. */
|
| #define PACKAGE_NAME "PostgreSQL"
[...]
...although the thing is so long that it's hard to tell.
I couldn't find a pthreads library/package/thing anywhere, or at least not
yet. My system *does* have a /usr/lib/libpthread.so (singular), but no
libpthreads (plural). Installing linuxpthreads-devel didn't solve anything.
Any thoughts?

DELL 2005FPW LCD monitor
by Stephen Ng
Hi!
I read a discussion on configuration of xorg.conf for the above in the
devel list in Feb 2005 which ended with a suggestion to submit to
bugzilla. Does anyone know what happened in the end? I have purchased
one of these monitors and need to know what the settings should be in my
FC3 Nvidia GeForce 3 setup.
Thanks.

Boot Problems
by Wojciech Komornicki
I have been running Fedora Core 4. Recently I updated a lot of packages
and also the kernel and so decided to reboot the machine so as to run
the new kernel. Everything went fine through the boot process. All
services loaded correctly. After the HAL daemon loaded, my computer
just hung. The cursor would not move and would not respond to any key
strokes.
I booted from the rescue disk and all my files are on the disk and I do
not see any problems. Out of frustration, I updated to Fedora Core 5.
The update proceeded without problems but upon reboot the machine hung
at the same point.
Has anyone else experienced this?

Missing file 'utf8' ???
by Amrit Angsusingh
I have a problem with the FC3 server . After log in the server as root
there was an echo on the screen ie:
KDSKBENT: in valid argument
fail to bind key 255 to vaule 2047
utf8: no such file or directory
and when I use the text mode , there was some abnormal character (ex. line ,
stroke) but the system appear to be normal. Could I correct this problem
without reinstalling the server?
Thanks

Screensavers - Removing
by Analogkid
Is it possible to remove a specific screensaver? There are just a
couple which I prefer not to have, or which my vid card doesn't
display very well.
Do I need to edit a config file? Or can I rm the program itself? If
they can be removed, where are they stored?
Thank you
Pete
