fc5 hangs
by David
Two days in a row my fc5 computer has frozen soon after I start using it in
the morning. The screen wakes up from screensaver mode when I move the
mouse and I'm able to do a few things like change the viewport... then the
screen goes blank and all I can see is the outline of the mouse pointer
which is no longer responsive to mouse motion. The keyboard is unresponsive
to control-alt-backspace and control-alt-delete and caps lock and num lock
fail to change the keyboard lights. How do I attempt to identify the
problem in a case like this? I think I might have clicked on an evolution
send/receive button soon before both crashes, so my only guess right now is
an evolution problem.
David

FC5, evolution on 90% CPU
by András Horváth
Hi,
I just upgraded from FC4 to FC5 (and upgraded) and get a strange problem:
When I start evolution, it begins to eat 85-90% of CPU continuously.
Even if there are no incoming mail to filter or other work to do. The
CPU temperature on my laptop is 76-78 C if evolution is running and
power consumption is very high.
I did not observe such phenomena in earlier versions.
What should be the problem?
Thank you in advance,
András

Can't print after CUPS update this morning?
by Bob Goodwin
I ran yum update this morning and observed some cups rpm's.
Now I can't print at all. It looks like the printer config. is gone
since none of my printers are displayed on the print screen.
And worse yet, I can't get the cups configuration screen to work, I sign
in via the saved info and get a blank white screen that says "connection
closed."
Am I alone in this?

quanta file upload bug
by Antoine
Hi,
I have been having a bit of a nightmare trying to get quanta to work.
I tried to retrieve my site and it simply wouldn't work (failed for no
aparent reason) so I got the site via ftp and am now trying to work
on it. Unfortunately, anything in a folder can't get uploaded unless I
unselect everything and then go through and select only the files and
not the folders. As I have about 1k files to upload this is not ok! I
have never had this issue with quanta before fedora - is anyone else
having this issue?
Cheers
Antoine

I do not have a current dump file to use..
Anybody have ideas?

binutils: linking of c++ code takes a long time
by Christian Nolte
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Hi!
I have a problem regarding linking of c++ code using a FC5-system. It is
a normal sized (about 100 classes) autotools-project (CXXFLAGS=-O0 -g3),
built in debug-mode. When it comes to the linking stage, linking takes
about 1.30 minutes (2.4 GHz Athlon). Using a FC4-system with all the
latest updates, linking takes about 10 seconds (1.8 GHz Athlon), this is
also true for another ArchLinux-system and a WindowsXP-system (using the
M$ linking-tools) I've tested. The linking time is reproducible slow on
a second FC5-system (1.8 GHz Intel dual-core CPU).
First I thought that there could be a binutils issue and I tried a
downgrade of binutils-2.16.91.0.6-5 (FC5) to binutils-2.15.94.0.2.2-2
(FC4) but this did not solve the problem. The second thing I tried was
disabling SELinux but this also did not solve this matter. Removing the
compiler-flag "-g3" has no effect too.
Perhaps someone of you has an idea what could be the problem here.
Best regards
Christian

Good Bye FC5
by Karl Larsen
I have had it. There are just too many new ways to do things and
lots of Gnome changes and I'm about fed up. It's back to dear old FC4
where it all works well. I hope they fix the problems in FC5 for FC6
when it emerges.

Cut, Copy, Paste Nightmare
by David Cary Hart
Maybe the problem is in KDE. Sometimes ctrl-c works; sometimes it
does not. Sometimes highlight->right-click->copy works.
But the biggest problem is with paste. ctrl-v never works.
Shift-insert works but I never know what it will paste. Similarly,
the middle button of my mouse works but I never know what I will get
and it is different from the results of shift-insert.
So in summary after copy or cut, I am never sure whether shift-insert
or the mouse-middle-button will paste the just cut text. Frequently,
neither works properly.
Anyone else? Any suggestions? This is one of those minor annoyances
that is extremely frustrating at times.

Samba install problem
by Freedom Web Services
Hi Everyone,
I have just installed FC5 to replace RH9 and am encountering loads of problems in getting it set up as my old RH9 system was.
I use it mainly as a web server using PHP and Mysql, I had it networked to my XP machine using samba and had it set up as a dhcp server. I want to run my internet connection through it as well for when I expand my network at a later date.
Ok, I have installed FC5 and set up my second drive which contains all my work as '/home'. I have also installed dhcp and got that working ok but thats where my problems start.
Although dhcp is allocating ip addresses ok I can not access the server using its name 'linux'. I assume this is due to samba not running.
I need to install samba as the system says it is not installed when I use 'rpm -q smb', so I downloaded 'samba-common-3.0.22.1.fc5.rpm'. When I go to install it with 'rpm -ivh samba-common-3.0.22.1.fc5.rpm I get loads of confiction errors.
I have also tried to use the 'Add / Remove software' and 'Software Updater' from the 'Applications' menu and get an 'Unable to retrive software infomation' error.
When I try to use yum with the command 'yum install samba-common-3.0.22.1.fc5.rpm' I get an 'Error: Cannot find a baseurl for repo: core'.
Why am I unable to install samba?
Many thanks,
Garry.
