Kernel 2.6.22.1-27.fc7 breaks NFS
by Miner, Jonathan W (US SSA)
Hi -
Just upgraded from 2.6.21-1.3228.fc7, and now seeing problems with NFS. I originally believed the problem was with the automounter, but it looks like it might be NFS instead. Rebooting with the old kernel solves the problem.
In this example, I'll create a new mountpoint, and try to mount my home directory. The directory is being served from a SUN Cluster 2.1 server.
# rm -rf /h
# mkdir -p /h/jminer
# mount superfly:/superfly/vol02/home/jminer /h/jminer
mount.nfs: /h/jminer is already mounted or busy
# echo $?
32
Now, if I try to mount the directory from the physical node, the mount suceeds.
# mount fly_a:/superfly/vol02/home/jminer /h/jminer
# echo $?
0
I saw similar problems with an earlier FC release, but it was related to either the autofs or nfs-utils package.

FC6 Issue with Cups after update
by Wade Hampton
I just did a yum update on my son's computer. Now the cups daemon
won't start. Running /sbin/service cups start results in:
Unable to read configuration file '/etc/cups/cupsd.conf' - exiting!
I checked the permissions and they are root, lp 644.
If I run the same code as in the /etc/init.d/cups script, it starts
and works fine:
su
. /etc/init.d/functions
DAEMON=cupsd
prog=cups
echo -n $"Starting $prog: "
daemon $DAEMON
RETVAL=$?
[ $RETVAL = 0 ] && touch /var/lock/subsys/cups
Using su, I tested and user lp can read the cupsd.conf file.
Any ideas?

Formatting CDs
by Aaron Konstam
It has been stated that you can format CD-RW using cdrecord or k3b.
I can't find that option in either program. k3b can format DVD-RW and
DVD+RW but not CDs as far as I can see.
Could someone explain how to do it

How to mount a dos floppy ?
by Bob Goodwin
How do I mount an old dos floppy without making additions to fstab?
I assume there is a proper way to do this since an icon comes up on the
desktop when I plug the disk in to the drive but it can't deal with the
file system apparently and refuses to mount. I don't know the magic
incantation for the command line.
I have a few disks I need to extract text [.doc] files from.

Fedora 7 freezes two or three times per day
by Langdon Stevenson
My Fedora 7 system is running well, except for the nasty habit of
freezing two or three times per day when I am working. First: all
windows stop responding to the mouse and key board, then soon after, the
mouse freezes as well.
The only option available then is to press the reset button to reboot
the system.
There doesn't appear to be any specific application that causes the
freeze. It typically happens when I have a largish number of
applications open at once (say: Firefox, Eclipse, Thunderbird, Pidgin,
Terminal, Putty), but I could be working in any one of the applications.
This problem has been happening since I installed F7 soon after the
official release. So I have seen this behavior with at least three
kernels (including the last release a few days ago).
My system spec:
- CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo e6600
- Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-965P-DQ6
- Video card: Asus EN7900GS
- kernel.x86_64 2.6.21-1.3228
All currently available F7 updates installed.
Are there any known issues that may be causing this? If not, should I
be reporting it as a bug?

Langdon

Canon Elura 100 Camcorder and FC5
by Robert L Cochran
I gave my wife a Canon Elura 100 camcorder for Christmas. I just watched
her download her very first movie to Windows XP. Can I do the same in
Fedora Core 5? If I just plugged in the camcorder to my onboard 1394
port, will an application come up recognizing the camcorder and offering
to download the movie from the DV tape?
Thanks

Cannot write to SD card
by Dotan Cohen
I have a 2 GB Sandisk SD card that I often write to. Just today, it
has started to be mounted read-only:
cp: cannot create regular file `bg.jpg2': Read-only file system
The read-write switch on the side of the card is set to write, and
I've never had trouble with it before. So I figured that I'll be smart
and man mount, in where I discovered the -w flag, but I get this
error:
[root@localhost ~]# mount -w /media/disk
mount: /dev/sda1 already mounted or /media/disk busy
mount: according to mtab, /dev/sda1 is already mounted on /media/disk
So I tried unmounting it, but the device seems to be busy:
[root@localhost ~]# umount /media/disk
umount: /media/disk: device is busy
umount: /media/disk: device is busy
There are no open konqueror windows, or anything else that might be
accessing the card, so far as I can tell. What must one do to either:
1) determine what is accessing the disk
or
2) Force umount anyway
Thanks in advance.

Fedora 7 - features and obvious usability enhancements
by Valent Turkovic
Hello,
first I would like to ask where is the proper place to suggest new
features and obvious usability enhancements for fedora.
Is there a mailing list or some group of people or someone specific I
have to target in order for some really much needed features to be
included in fedora releases?
First one I see as a really great usability add on to fedora is
Deskbar gnome plugin. It is in the repositories, but it is not
installed by default and it is not enabled by default. I think that
this is a great shame. All new users (and also old ones) would benefit
a lot from just including this great widget in default desktop setup
for Fedora 7 .
Ok, I won't go too much long here if this isn't proper way of getting
attention to the right people. I don't mean that you aren't proper or
not important but I just don't know if this mailing list is the right
way for discussing usability and features. Please tell me if it is and
then I'll continue if not point me in the right direction.
Thank you all for your time and attention.
Valent from Croatia.

Where is the root password?
by potat0
I am trying to install Fedora on a pentium 5 using (F-7-i386-DVD.iso).
All works OK, but I seem to have missed the part where I get to set
the root password. My installation seems to have worked OK. I can log
on with a user I created during the installation, however, with no
root permissions. Is there a default root password that comes with
the install?
Thanks in advance.
