Upgrade Caused Downgrade
by Eugene Poole
All,
I've just experienced one of the most unnerving situations. I've a
custom built machine that was running the following:
ECS GeForce 6100SM-M mother board
AMD 64 X2 5600+
4GB RAM DDR2 800
nVidia GT7300 PCIE 256MB video card
2 - SATA Hard drives; 1 - 320 GB WD and 1 - 500GB Seagate
550 watt Antec power supply
Fedora 9 x86_64 with all of the latest patches
For Xmas I upgraded the machine to:
Gigabyte MA790X-DS4 mother board
AMD Phenom Quad core 9550
8GB RAM DDR2 800
Retained the video card from above
2 - SATA Hard drives; 1 - 500 GB Seagate and 1 - 1TB Seagate
850 watt Antec power supply
I attempted to install, from the same DVD used above, Fedora 9 x86_64
with 4 failures at just about the same place while installing packages.
I used my i386 Fedora 9 DVD and all went well during the install so
attempted to do a upgrade to x86_64 without luck. I did a test using my
Fedora 8 x86_64 DVD and it installed perfectly. I then attempted to do
a upgrade to Fedora 9 without any luck (it appeared to fail at about the
same place). I then downloaded and burned another copy of the Fedora 9
x86_64 DVD, checked it and attempted to do another install and one again
it failed at about the same place.
What could possibly be happening? I since reinstall Fedora 8, but that
has reached it's E-O-L. Should I just attempt to go to Fedora 10 x86_64?
Any help or advice would be great!

Boinc
by John Aldrich
Anyone here running Boinc on Fedora 10 x86_64? I followed the instructions on
their (Boinc/Seti@home) website and ran "yum install boinc..." and it
installed two packages. Now when I try to run boincmgr, I get the following
error in the console:
connect: Connection refused
execvp(/oldhome/john/boinc, --redirectio, --launched_by_manager) failed with
error 13!
connect: Operation now in progress
Any ideas? What the heck is "error 13"????

3ware 3dm2 and Fedora 10
by Mike Zingale
Has anyone succeeded in installing one of the latest versions of the
3ware 3dm2 software on Fedora 10 (x86_64)? I tried both 9.5.1.1 and
9.4.1.3, but in both cases, the setupLinux_x64.bin program aborted
claiming that it was unable to delete some temporary files. Looking
through the script some, it seems that it may be related to Java, but
I couldn't find a way around this.
Ultimately, I wound up installing an older version, 9.3.0.4, which
seems to work fine on Fedora 10 (i.e., I can access 3dm2 through
firefox and monitor my RAID). But I'd like to know what the issue
with the newer versions is.

Default route not set on boot up
by awrobinson-ml@nc.rr.com
After installing F10, when I power up my laptop, the default route does
not get set. I have a "GATEWAY=192.168.1.1" statement in both the
ifcfg-wlan0 file and the /etc/sysconfig/network file. 'netstat -nr'
shows no gateway until I run 'route add default gw 192.168.1.1'. This is
the first time that I put my network setup under the control of Network
Manager. I don't know if that has anything to do with this. I know I
could code the default route in rc.local or something like that, but I
would rather have it work correctly. Any ideas?
Thanks!

mdadm: cannot open device /dev/sda1: Device or resource busy \ mdadm: /dev/sda1 has no superblock - assembly aborted
by James Groleau
Hey Folks,
I've got a problem that I cannot seem to make go away.
I've got a machine running FC8
]# uname -a
Linux <hostname> 2.6.26.6-49.fc8 #1 SMP Fri Oct 17 15:33:32 EDT 2008 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
with an external eSATA Hard Drive RAID 5 array.
I installed a replacement drive for the main system and performed a fresh
install of FC10 with the RAID 5 array disconnected. Then after ensuring all
updates were completed (as of Jan 03/09) I reattached the array.
As root I issued the mdadm command and received the following error:
]# mdadm --assemble /dev/md1 /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdd1 /dev/sde1 /dev/sdf1 /dev/sda1
mdadm: cannot open device /dev/sda1: Device or resource busy
mdadm: /dev/sda1 has no superblock - assembly aborted
I cannot seem to determine why I cannot access the sda1 drive. I have replaced
the FC8 system drive and all is well. I can start and mount the RAID array
normally.
There is no mdadm.conf file. I have always mounted the array manually.
I've beat Google into a frenzy over the last couple days trying find a
solution to no avail.
Any clues/hints/suggestion?
Thanks much.
Additional information:
======================================================
]# mdadm --assemble --run /dev/md1 /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdd1 /dev/sde1 /dev/sdf1
This will work to bring up the array under FC10 in a degraded state.
I did remove sda1 from the array, then delete and recreate the partition on
sda, and attempt to add it back into the array, but continue to receive the
same error messages from mdadm.
I had to rebuild the array under FC8.

Need advice on music management software
by Konstantin Svist
Hi all,
I have a music collection that's being merged from several
computers/devices onto a single one (which doubles as a media
center/HTPC). Problem is, I'd like to merge the duplicate files (and
there are plenty) but still need to be able to sync between this central
system and the other computers (all running Fedora, btw).
User 1 has a laptop with Amarok and syncs her music to an iPod (listens
on both laptop and iPod)
User 2 also uses Amarok, but no external devices
User 3 uses a car mp3 player only (wirelessly synced to her laptop using
special software...)
Everyone wants all the music on the HTPC, though everyone will keep a
copy of their own subsection of the collection on their own devices.
Nobody expects to sync to the HTPC from anything other than laptops,
though iPod integration would be a bonus.
Would be nice to listen to music from HTPC, and upon hearing a song I
like to quickly mark it to send it to my laptop at the next sync :)
Crazy setup, I know
Any suggestions?

Help... Can't boot!
by John Aldrich
I was using Fedora Core 6, just fine, but decided since it was so out
of date, that I'd upgrade to Fedora 10. Now, for some reason, it won't
boot. It keeps saying "Unknown Partition Type 0x5".
This is the same *exact* system that was working with Core 6, all I
did was install over the old version (except for "/home" and a storage
partition.)
I'm using X86_64 where before I was using i386, but that shouldn't
matter, should it?
All data drives are IDE/PATA, but I'm installing off a SATA DVD ROM.
HELP!!! I need to get this up and running as it's my primary desktop
machine. I am stuck using my wife's XP box until I can get it back up
and running! :-(

F10 Strange Audio Errors
by Sean Bruno
I'm seeing strange audio issues(skipping and buffering) when playing
audio from Amarok(1.4), Audacity and from the video game Quake Wars.
I have an on-board sound card:
00:04.0 Multimedia audio controller: nVidia Corporation CK804 AC'97
Audio Controller (rev a2)
And a USB Turntable:
Bus 002 Device 005: ID 08bb:2900 Texas Instruments Japan PCM2900 Audio
Codec
Periodically, while Amarok(1.4) is playing back I see:
Dec 25 16:48:45 localhost pulseaudio[15582]: module-alsa-sink.c: ALSA
woke us up to write new data to the device, but there was actually
nothing to write! Most likely t
his is an ALSA driver bug. Please report this issue to the PulseAudio
developers.
When Audacity is recording from the USB turntable I see:
ALSA sound/usb/usbaudio.c:351: frame 0 active: -70
And when Quake Wars is running, I see the following in the console
output:
snd_pcm_readi failed: Input/output error
snd_pcm_readi failed: Input/output error
snd_pcm_readi failed: Input/output error
Any ideas as to what is going on here?

F10 and encrypted partitions - positive outcome
by mike cloaked
One thing that has not been discussed on this forum for a while is the issue
of the handling of encrypted partitions in F10.
I have an old test laptop that had previously been installed with F9 with
encrypted swap, /, and /opt partitions and an unencrypted /boot partition.
I ran a clean F10 install and asked the installer to reformat the swap, root
and /opt partitions, which it did.
The nice surprise was that on firstboot the system asked me to enter the
luks passphrase for the root partition and seemed to have stored the
passphrases for the other partitions within the root partition so only a
single passphrase was requested. This is excellent and means that booting
the fully encrypted system is now very user friendly.
This makes usability (user friendliness) excellent - so congrats to the
developers for getting this right in F10.
I have not tried suspending that machine so I don't know if coming back from
suspend actually works for this machine but at least booting works nicely
now.
