Radio suddenly appears.
by Aaron Konstam
I sat down to read my mail. Suddenly when I open firefox I get a radio
broadcast in Spanish. It lasted for 10 minutes no matter what web
location I was at, then suddenly it stopped.
Any explanations out there.

Understanding the mystery of printing?
by Tom Horsley
I just got a new HP Photosmart C5580 which can (among other things)
print on inkjet printable DVDs and CDs. My current goal (probably
hopeless :-) is to tweak the .ppd file for the copy of the printer
I made which defaults to the DVD tray and DVD paper size so that
any application I care to print from will print in the middle
of the DVD (a quest that will probably take years and cost
thousands of lives :-).
My first big mystery came with sample printouts I made of a
hashmark pattern I could use to measure how far off from the
center I am: Both inkscape and gimp print the pattern with
the exact same offsets from the center of the CD, but open
office prints with a completely different offset.
As near as I can tell, I've told every app the page size is
the same and there are no margins. They all print the marks
scaled the same with the same distance between marks, so
does anyone have any clue why open office thinks the center
of the media is in a different place? Is there some obscure
printer setup option I missed somewhere in OO?
Even if I can figure how to tweak the .ppd file, it won't
do much good if different applications use it a different way :-).

Why do we disable esd in libgnome?
by 平天韩
hi Great list,
I just find that the libgnome-2.24.1-7.fc10 has been disabled "esd" when it
is built.
This has caused the "gnome_sound_play()" doesn't work and some package such
as
"stardict" cannot play sound.
Why should we disable esd in libgnome? Could we enable it?
Thanks.

Where to get the java plugin for F10. I'm using F9
by Nigel Henry
Where do I get the java plugin from for F10. I'm using F9, but have problems
with some java sites, and believe that the F10 version of the plugin resolves
these problems.
I've already tried altering my sources list in apt to the F10 everything repo,
but am getting parsing errors, which is annoying to say the least.
All I want to do is download an rpm for the the java plugin for F10, but can't
find it anywhere. and I have tried google, but that's a waste of time.
A link would be helpfull, and I'd be most gratefull for that.
Nigel.

Re: fedora-list Digest, Vol 59, Issue 267
by gmspro
I typed this in the terminal.
yum install totem-xine
Output:
Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit
Setting up Install Process
Parsing package install arguments
Package totem-xine-2.24.3-1.fc10.i386 already installed and latest version
Nothing to do
Then I typed this in the terminal
/usr/bin/totem-backend -b xine totem
After this when I trying to play a file like "dbgt35.rmvb" it starts playing the audio of that video file but it does not play the video .(black screen)
After this I also typed this in the terminal.
/usr/bin/totem-backend -b xine totem-video-thumbnailer
Can anyone tell me what are these?
totem-audio-preview

What do they do?
Now if I check from Movie Player>help>About
It says :Movie Player using xine-lib version 1.1.16.1

Tipically I use xine engine with totem, instead of gstreamer.
You can do:
yum install totem-xine
then you can use totem-backend to verify if setting xine as backend
solves the problem and eventually set it as the default engine for
totem.
[gcecchi@tekkaman ~]$ totem-backend --help
Error: No backend name passed.
Usage:
- As root, to set the default backend, system-wide:
/usr/bin/totem-backend -b <backend name>
- As a normal user, to run a program with a specific backend:
/usr/bin/totem-backend -b <backend name> <program name>
[program options...]
- "backend name" is one of gstreamer or xine
- "program name" is one of totem, totem-audio-preview,
totem-video-indexer or totem-video-thumbnailer
In totem gui you see the engine with
Help --> About
and with xine set you get in the window:
Movie Player using xine-lib version 1.1.16.1

can't install F10 on Compaq w/ ASUS mb
by Michael Klinosky
Hello.
I have a Compaq Presario SR1220, onto which I installed F7. Now, I'm
trying to put F10 on it, and hitting only roadblocks.
It has an ASUS mb, model P4GV-LA. It uses the intel 845GV chipset. I
found, on
http://docs.fedoraproject.org/release-notes/f10/en_US/What_is_New_for_Ins...
- in section 2.6.2 Python - that kernel modesetting drivers for intel
are in the works. Is there some website that gives the status of this
work? Or, is there someone here that knows?
For now, I'm wondering if I'm doing things properly. In that section,
the forth bullet states my exact situation (video 'noise'). So, I tried
adding 'nomodeset' to the boot options line (i.e. 'Hit TAB to enter boot
options.') However, that doesn't fix anything. I also tried (in turn)
noprobe, skipdc, rhgb, and vga=0x318 -- still no joy.
I did try 'noprobe nomodeset'; the boot process got a little further,
but then it bombed at the install method screen. I selected 'CD/DVD',
and it complained that it couldn't find a Fedora disk. :(( (I was
using the DVD.)
To summarize, I need to know the status of the intel video drivers (for
Python) and if I'm using the boot command line properly (to disable
modeset).

httpd service is dead
by Simon Tierney
Sorry if this is basic.
Since I started using Fedora 10 I can't login as root.
Even though the system recognizes the root password when it requires it
for certain administrative tasks it refuses to let me login as root.
When I try to edit httpd.conf I get the message "could not save file..."
it doesn't even prompt me for the root password.
My httpd service is dead and I can't resurrect it, what should I do?

No Sound on Fedora 10 with Audigy SB
by Reuben D. Budiardja
Hello,
I've searched this in the archive and on the internet and still haven't found
anything.
I have Creative Audigy SB sound card. It doesn't work on F10. When logging in
to KDE, KDE says something about pulse audio doesn't work, and phonon is
falling back to use Audigy, but I still don't have any sound.
I tried GNOME and still doesn't have sound.
I thought there used to be "system-config-soundcard" , but I couldn't find that
either. Below is some relevant output of lspci and lsmod in case it helps
diagnosing the problem.
I still have FC 7 on the system (multi-boot), and just confirmed that the sound
works on FC 7.
Thanks for any help.

PHP Mime Broken?
by das
Hello Friends
I copied a part of an website with 'wget -ckr' and then when I opened
the files with a browser, none of the three GUI browsers Epiphany,
Firefox, or Galeon on my Fedora 8 are being able to open the PHP
files, like say index.php which is called by index.html. Even when I
gave the command 'Open With' what is happening that the browser is
opening another tab, and asking there once again how to open the *.php
files. As a test I sent some files in a tar to one of my friends who
is on Fedora 10, and they are opening fine.
What is happening there? Is the mime broken? And why? Any suggestion?
One thing, for the time being I will not be able to upgrade to Fedora
10, I am now too busy with a job to change OS. Anything else?
Thank you all.
