Preupgrade still not working
by Timothy Murphy
I'm puzzled by this comment, which seems to have closed
Bug 508439 - preupgrade has "Failed to fetch release info."
----------------------------------
This capture shows that preupgrade tries to get the url
http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/releases.txt
and fails with a error from the remote server.

EDT (-) [reply] -------
My apologies, we recently rebuilt some servers and missed that file. This
should be fixed now, thanks for the report.
----------------------------------
I still don't find the above file releases.txt .
Does anyone?

firefox 3.5 open video?
by Tom Horsley
So, I just got the firefox 3.5 final and it popped up
the whatsnew page touting the virtues of the new
openvideo.
Is the demo video it wants you to play a video
of a still image of a play button icon? 'Cause
that's all it would play for me :-).

Inkscape -- whiteboard
by davide
How can I find out the option used to compile and generate a package
provided by Fedora?
I would be interested in knowing if Fedora compiled inkscape with
whiteboard support.
If not, how can I modify the option and recompile it using the src.rpm
infracstructure?
thanks, d.

Burning .thunderbird to a cd/dvd changes r/w
by Jim
When burning .thunderbird folder to a cd/dvd it changes the r/w
priviledges in Mail folders to r only.
and you say no way, well i'm sitting here looking at the mail folders
on the dvd and all of them say 'read'
In the past I noticed if I move the .thunderbird folder onto a hard
drive or flash drive I had no problems of putting the .thunderbird
folder onto a new upgrade/install and it would work perfectly.

accessing a samba network drive via the command line
by Kevin Kempter
Hi all:
I have a network drive that I've setup as a samba connection in dolphin.
in dolphin I can go to Network --> LacieBigDisk and connect to the drive
However I want to access it via the command line
I can see this info per smbclient (there is no passwd)
smbclient -L 192.168.1.30
Enter root's password:
Domain=[LACIE-2BIG] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.0.25b]
Sharename Type Comment
--------- ---- -------
raw Disk
aperature Disk
IPC$ IPC IPC Service (LaCie 2big Network)
Domain=[LACIE-2BIG] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.0.25b]
Server Comment
--------- -------
Workgroup Master
--------- -------
WORKGROUP LACIE-2BIG
I tried this:
# smbclient service \\\\192.168.1.30\\LACIE-2BIG\\raw "
and this:
# smbclient service //192.168.1.30/LACIE-2BIG/raw ""
with no luck.

F11 Gnome-panel icon/setting problems
by Max Pyziur
Greetings,
I recently upgraded my Dell Inspiron 600m to F11. More often than not the
icons and various menus on gnome-panel fail to show. Those that do have no
behaviour (click on one and there is no result).
Any guidence would be appreciated.
In the meantime, the latest F11 galeon i386 update solves the program
startup.
Thanks.

Converting to EXT4 on encrypted lvm
by Andrig T. Miller
After upgrading to Fedora 11 x86_64, I started to look into converting
to EXT4 from EXT3.
My / partition is an lvm that is encrypted (I do have a separate /boot).
I tried following the instructions using tune2fs -O
extents,uninit_bg,dir_index /dev/sda2 (my / device and /boot is
/dev/sda1).
I get the following error:
tune2fs 1.41.4 (27-Jan-2009)
tune2fs: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sda2
Couldn't find valid filesystem superblock.
Finally, I just booted by changing /etc/fstab to specify ext4, which
works fine, but from reading the various instructions, I won't have
the new features turned on unless I am able to use tune2fs
successfully.
Is the error I'm getting because its an encrypted volume? Is there
different instructions for an encrypted volume?
Thanks for any help.

auditd failed -
by Bob Goodwin
When this f-10 computer boots I see the message "Starting auditd --
Failed." It's certainly nothing that I am aware of having made changes
to. I have a similar computer that indicates "OK" when starting. Both
are installations from the Gnome Live CD.
The man page simply says "It’s responsible for writing audit records to
the disk." I'm sure there's a reason but I have never seen those
records? Presumably this is something that's not working and should be.
What do I do to fix it?

Comments from a new user: what is Distrowatch complaining about?
by gilpel@altern.org
Of course, there has been many updates since the final release, but I'm
using Fedora 11.1 x86_64 on an AMD X3 7200 system.
Installation went well. Only Brasero refused to work. It pretended to burn
a DVD, never complained till the end, but the DVD was left blank. A
similar problem is described here:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=476409
I never had much success with Brasero, even on an other PC, so I switched
to K3B, which never failed me. Big download though.
I'm a heavy clipboard user and I really don't like glipper slowly
unfolding its list when it gets longer than a screen. So, I wanted to
install klipper.
"yum install klipper" didn't produce any result, as urpmi klipper, in
Mandriva would.
Then I learned about the search option at FedoraFaqs and things went
better. But Mandriva's urpmi searches automatically and makes propositions
if it's not sure. Btter.
Why is groupinstall needed for XFCE, not for kdebase, for instance? No
groupinstall in Mandriva. Why groupinstall and check-updates (with an
hyphen)?
I would appreciate to see what Package Manager for GNOME is doing rather
than doing its thing and giving no info.
The application "Dictionary Look up" didn't close after a search, hiding
the tab I was using to write this.
Apparently, you better not click "Suspend" on a Desktop. First reboot
ended on a blank screen, the second on a green striped screen, only the
third succeeded. I suppose I shouldn't have done this, but what if the
children use the computer and click it, just to see what happened... like
I did? Maybe the option should be removed for desktops.
The Boot up splash screen doesn't appear unless I press "Enter", and
that's after I set it to stay for 12 seconds instead of 1, as seems to be
the default. I like the standard procedure better: give me the splash
screen!
BTW, getting to the login screen in less than 10 seconds is just
dumbfounding! It makes you machine look liek a tiger.
I couldn't install Abobe Flash as suggested by Fedorafaqs. Adobe's
instructions are much simpler and work very well:
Download the x86_64 package, un gzip it on the desktop, copy to:
/home/my_user_name/.mozilla/plugins
Restart Firefox, go to YouTube :)
Ok, I understand that all these are not show stoppers, like the "Out of
range" I received while rebooting the latest Mandriva x86_64, for
instance, but ironing out a few rough edges would certainly make new
users' experience more pleasant.
If this is what FreeBSD friendly Distrowatch calls the shop stoppers of a
bleeding edge distro, I'm all for bleeding edge.
P.s.: I'll have a few questions about installing NVIDIA drivers --
rpmfusion vs NVIDIA's own install program -- and watching evil WMV... on
state tv* -- God damn this rotten bunch of morons! -- in my next message.
*See for instance:
http://www.radio-canada.ca/emissions/decouverte/2008-2009/Reportage.asp?i...
This used to... kinda work with MediaPlayerConnectivity and mplayer,
sometimes editing URLs, but MPC is not available for Firefox 3.5 .
Of course, you have to understand that Microsoft is doing its best so that
Canadians can't watch the state television unless they buy Windows.
Tricky!
