Live CD install
by Mike Chambers
When you boot up a live cd and go to "install to hard drive", does it do
it's own partitioning, or do you have the option of customizing it
yourself?

NFS with Fedora 13
by Krosh Ivanov
Hi folks,
I'm using Fedora 13 as a nfs-server and a mini version of Fedora in a
virtual machine as nfs-client, but I've got some permission problems. I've
edited the files /etc/exports, /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny and I
keep getting errors related to permission (like "mount.nfs: access denied by
server while mounting 192.168.122.1:/home/max/Documents/Src/libs"). It is
unclear to me why those errors are happening, 'cause I disable the firewall
(iptables, etc.) every time before running the nfs service and the target
directory permission is 0777, the selinux is disabled as well.
The configuration files are below. The server's ip is 192.168.122.1 and the
client's one is 192.168.122.140.
The command that is used to mount on client is "mount -t nfs -o nfsvers=4
192.168.122.1:/home/max/Documents/Src/libs /root/libs/".
exports file:
/home/krosh/Documents/Src/libs
192.168.122.0/24(ro,sync,no_subtree_check,no_root_squash)
hosts.allow
lockd: 192.168.122.140
portmap: 192.168.122.140
rquotad: 192.168.122.140
mountd: 192.168.122.140
statd: 192.168.122.140
hosts.deny:
portmap: ALL
Is there another file that I should alter?
Thanks,
Ivan

How to fix no color in Firefox watching Youtube Video
by Abu Attar Musharih
Dear List,
My Firefox 3.6.13 on F14 used to be working properly when watching
Youtube videos.
Now the videos are shown only in black and white, no colours. Did
anyone experience the same thing and know how to fix it?
Thanks in advance.

Mailing list validation tool
by Bill Davidsen
I'm looking for a tool to validate email addresses, not just as deliverable but
actually valid. To do this the recipient mail server will need to be contacted.
I have inherited a large mailing list, and since AOL has taken to rejecting
delivery if any one recipient is invalid I don't want to burden the mail system
by sending a 100k quarterly newsletter one at a time.
Is there a tool in Fedora?
Note: suggestions for other tools welcome, but I'd like one packaged which I
don't have to find, build, and possibly maintain. I can use the socket library
from newstools if I must, but I'd rather not roll my own if there's a solution
of the "why didn't you just use..." type.

help.. my fedora hung up and I cant login
by Triadi Krisnawan
Dear Experts,
Please help me with my problem, I really new with linux.
I was trying to setup the resolution setting for the monitor.
I follow some tips that I got from the web about modifying xorg.conf file.
I tried to added some entries under "Screen" part. I've added Modes "1280x1024_60" it didnt change anything after I rebooted.
I then added another entries under "Monitor" part. I've added Modeline "1280x1024_60" and under Option I added "PreferredMode" "1280x1024_60"
But after I reboot the machine, the boot process hung up. It only goes up to the fedora logo then stop and nothing happened. I tried to wait but nothing was happen.
I was wondering how can I stop the boot process go to root directory and set back the original xorg.conf file. I made a back up already of this file and renamed it as xorg.conf_original.
I dont understand when I went to GRUB window. It said I am in minimal BASH like and the command is very limited unlike a normal unix command.
Can somebody help me to restore my xorg.conf file back so the system can boot up properly please?
Really need help.
Thanks,
Triadi

Qn about rsnapshot/rsync directory filter rules
by Suvayu Ali
Hi everyone,
I am trying to setup my backups using rsnapshot. I have a rather large
and frequently changing /home/<user>/ that I want to backup. I don't
want to backup the frequently changing directories (e.g. my downalods
directory or temporary work directory). In other words I wanted to
rsnapshot to backup _only_ the directories/files explicitly specified
and skip everythign else.
So I created a file ~/.rsync-filter with include rules like these,
include_/.config/**
include_/dir1/**
include_/.gitconfig
include_/.gitignore
include_/.gitk
include_/dir2/**
Now say I have other files and direcotries like,
~/.oldconfig/
~/dir2_i_dont_want/
~/dir3_i_dont_want/
Calling rsync with -F works but it also backs up the other unwanted
directory and files. How do I exclude them? The problem is I can't write
explicit exclude rules as that would need to be updated every time
something new is created (as I want rsnapshot to _not_ backup anything
by default).
I tried exclude_/* at the end of the filter rules, that made rsnapshot
skip the explicitly mentioned includes like,
include_/dir1/**
include_/dir2/**
The hidden files were backed up just fine though. Any ways of doing what
I want?

Going from Broadcom's sources to wireless card to WPA network
by Suresh Govindachar
Hello,
In my attempts at replacing Windows on my Dell M6400 laptop
with -14-x86_64-Live-Desktop.iso, I have gotten as far as
being able to create a live usb stick. My next step is to get
on the internet via the Dell Wireless 1510 Wireless-N WLAN
Mini-Card and my "WPA" network.
Broadcom offers sources and a library at:
http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/hybrid-portsrc_x86_64-v5_100_82_38...
(via http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php ).
I did make on a machine with Linux 2.6.28-18-generic
#60-Ubuntu SMP Fri Mar 12 04:26:47 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux:
~/tmp/broadcom$ make
KBUILD_NOPEDANTIC=1 make -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build M=`pwd`
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.28-18-generic'

LD [M] /h/sgovinda/tmp/broadcom/wl.ko
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.28-18-generic'
~/tmp/broadcom$
The action for "make install" is:
install -D -m 755 wl.ko /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/wl.ko
which, I _guess_, is just copying wl.ko and doing a "chmod 755 /<path>/wl.ko".
Key requirement: The wireless card works with Win XP and I do
_not_ want any firmware changes to happen to it!
Questions:
1) Will copying wl.ko to the corresponding directory on the
Live USB be OK (since the build happened on Ubuntu
2.6.28-18-generic)?
2) If copying is OK and if copying and use with or without
rebooting will _not_ make any changes to the wireless
card's firmware, what do I do next to get on the WPA
network and then to the internet?
Thanks,

host.conf order WHY doesn't WORK?? Fedora 14..
by erikmccaskey64
https://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=n2660q6u
Why does "ping" sees "audit.median.hu" as 127.0.0.0, and why does "host -t a audit.median.hu" sees it as "193.68.35.149"?
I just have a caching nameserver on my Fedora PC:
yum -y install caching-nameserver
service named restart
chkconfig named on
I configured my DNS server addresses in the Network-Manager Applet: 127.0.0.1, 8.8.8.8
"audit.median.hu" is just an example site [hosts ads, etc.]
Even with wireshark: i can see the:
195.70.37.149 DNS Standard query A audit.median.hu
So the big question: WHY doesnt the host command, or my webbrowser recognizes, that i've modified the "audit.median.hu"'s IP address?? WHY?
Thank you for any help..
