Upgrading via DVD iso on a USB storage device.
by linux guy
I want to upgrade from F14 to F15. For whatever reason, the boot after
running preupgrade fails if I try to do it that way.
So now I would like to upgrade via the DVD iso.
I would like to do so without burning a DVD. I'd like to load the DVD iso
onto a USB flash storage device and boot it from that.
I tried using the Fedora Live USB Creator tool. It gives me a "Unable to
find LiveOS on ISO" error.
How do I put the DVD iso image on a USB flash storage device so it will boot
?
Thanks

zip /gzip in bash
by 嘉谟
Hi every one ,
I was confuse to use gzip in shell.
You see below. I can use zip -gj make test.tar include the
testfile and the test1file
However , use gzip make the test_gzip.tar.gz NULL.
I see man and use gzip -c file >> tarname. to add a file to a tar file .
Can anyone tell me why?
You can let /root have two sample file testfile test1file
#!/bin/sh
anse='/root/test.tar'
anse_gzip='/root/test_gzip.tar.gz'
test='/usr/local/sbin/testfile'
test1='/usr/local/sbin/test1file'
zip -gj $anse $test
zip -gj $anse $test1
gzip -c $test >> $anse_gzip
gzip -c $test1 >> $anse_gzip
I think gzip can do what zip can do in linux .
If I just do
gzip -c testfile >> test_gzip.tar.gz
It can create the test_gzip.tar.gz file But can't include any file .

When I set my /etc/sysconfig/desktop to
DISPLAYMANAGER=/usr/bin/slim-dynwm
DESKTOP=openbox
slim doesn't actually run, so issuing
$ ps -eZ | grep -i slim
yields nothing.
What else could I check?

Alternate I/O (braille) during Installation of Fedora
by Chris Tyler
I have a student who is blind and hearing impaired. I know that braille
output devices, etc., can be configured once a system is up, but the
course I'm teaching involves system installation. What support is
available for that type of hardware during system installation?

Programs that should load on boot should be easier to do...
by Linda McLeod
When I photo edit, I would like the two files to come up, along with
Gimp..
When the two files come up, they don't come up as I had them on the
desktop.. Gimp doesn't come up at all.. I'm told that I must somehow
reconfigure Gimp to come-up on boot.. I tried twice to reconfigure Gimp
to autoload.. "thht!"...
On the desktop I have one file window taking one third the desktop, with
Gimp on the remaining two-thirds.. Under the pix-file window I have
another window, pulled down with only the top two files showing, to file
pix edits as either "screenpix" or "fixpix"... At every boot I must
rebuild the desktop to my liking... Fedora should have a utility that
the user sets the program to instantly autoload at boot.. and files
should remember where and how they are set... After all, the "Computer"
is the epitome of efficiency.. or should be.. and Fedora is most
definitely the best of the best...

gnome-photo-printer prints only black pages
by Peter Lesterhuis
Hi,
For years I have been very happy with gpp. Easy to use, fine results.
But now I can't print pictures with it anymore. The print preview on the
screen looks promising, but only black pages are coming out of the
printer wasting ink and photopaper.
I have fedora 15 running and gnome 3 desktop. Googling on this subject
does not give me any clues. Does anybody have the same issue with gpp?

how to make USB microphone the default
by Ranjan Maitra
Does anyone know how to make a USB microphone the default? I have been
trying out recordmydesktop with a USB microphone in, but the sound does
not seem to be recording. Without the microphone, the recording
happens, but understandably feebly and with lots of noise.
I am using F15 with the LXDE spin.
Many thanks and best wishes,
Ranjan

Thank you for taking an interest.
I don't know what could be wrong with /usr/bin/xauth since KDM works fine. I see nothing in /var/log/messages from SElinux (except something related to wine).
What permissions should I be looking for?
$ ls -l --lcontext /usr/bin/xauth
-rwxr-xr-x. 1 system_u:object_r:xauth_exec_t:s0 root root 36840 Feb 8 2011 /usr/bin/xauth
$ ls -l --lcontext /usr/bin/slim-dynwm
-rwxr-xr-x. 1 system_u:object_r:bin_t:s0 root root 120 Jul 25 12:07 /usr/bin/slim-dynwm
$ ls -l --lcontext /usr/bin/slim
-rwxr-xr-x. 1 system_u:object_r:xdm_exec_t:s0 root root 168712 Jul 25 12:10 /usr/bin/slim

bluetooth question
by François Patte
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Bonjour,
I have a bluetooth mouse. When I log-in, I can see a red cross on the
bluetooth icon in the gnome-panel, which seeems to indicate that
bluetooth is not enabled.
Nevertheless, If I click on the ico, I have the possibility to disable
bluetooth; and if I click another time, I can enable bluetooth and the
red cross disappears and, at last, my mouse is working.
Is there a way to configure bluetooth to have my mouse working
immediately, as soon as I log-in?
Thanks.
