no sound after yum update of working FC16
by dave perry
This evening I did a "sudo yum update" which included a new kernel and
kernel headers. So I reinstalled the Nvidia proprietary driver
(290.10), rebooted and now I have no sound.
/var/log/yum.log shows the following record of this evening's update:

Does any of the above point to what was broken by the yum update?

Many thanks for the response. I'm pretty sure a clean install from the
Live DVD (I've read that there were problems with the Live CD with 16)
would be feasible & not too painful but I think I'll put if on the back
burner for a while & see if anything occurs that warrants an update.
Also many apologies for the formatting of this email. Replying from
digest mode is horrible & between them Thunderbird & the mailing list
software mangle stuff.
Cheers,
Phil...

Disk Druid and RAID 10 Partitions
by Aero Maxx D
If I am using a raid 10 setup on 4 Hard Drives, would I make a raid
partition of 250MB on each of the 4 drives as in total this would be
500MB, or would I still make a 500MB raid partition, same for swap still
make a 4992MB partition or halve it and spread it over the 4 drives ?
Below is how Disk Druid sets up the partitions itself when using only 1
drive.
VolGroup 1144192
lv_root 51200 / ext4
lv_home 229472 /home ext4
lv_swap 4992 swap
sda
sda1 1 BIOS Boot
sda2 500 /boot ext4
sda3 285686 VolGroup physical volume (LVM)

Support for RFC 6187 and smartcard authentication in OpenSSH
by Anamitra Dutta Majumdar
Hi Anthony ,
Thanks for your responses.
I have initiated a new thread.
Can you provide me with further details.
Thanks,
Anamitra
Hello Anamitra,
I suggest you start a new thread on the list but, yes, there is smart
card authentication support in Fedora using opensc. It's been in Fedora
for a while.

Can't access DVD -
by Bob Goodwin
I suppose I should know by know but ...
Do I need an entry in /etc/fstab for an optical disk drive? If
so what should it be?
I viewed some lectures on line, bought the download actually but
decided would eat up more of my bandwidth allotment for the
month than I could afford and had them send me some DVD's
instead. Then to my surprise my F-16/64 installations wont play
them although they looked fine from the download site.
When I put a "movie" dvd in the drive an icon pops up normally
but ls /media appears to be empty:
[bobg@box6 ~]$ ll /media
total 0
Should I not see something like /media/cdrom ? The disk I am
testing with has always worked on earlier Fedora's. Admittedly I
rarely do anything with dvd's but when I have needed to I have
been able to play and record, in most cases data. Now as far as
VLC and Parole it is like there's no drive installed?
I need help troubleshooting.
Thanks,
Bob

During some CD operations Fedora freezes for some seconds
by Joachim Backes
Hi,
having a weird effect (in F16, [F17 too]): during some CD operations,
ejecting for example, or clicking on the CD symbol by nautilus if a new
CD is inserted in the drive, my system freezes, so my desktop is
insensitive for some seconds.
Somebody sees this too, and how to get rid from this effect?
All answers are welcome.
Kind regards

Kernel Panic is making me panic
by Arthur Dent
Hello all,
On Feb 29 my Fedora 16 box updated itself (I'm not wild about the only
options being completely manual update or completely automatic update -
but that's another story). It must have updated the Kernel because the
next day when I turned on the PC I had a kernel panic (details below)
and the machine failed to boot.
I had a zero timeout on grub so this meant that I had to use a Mint
liveCD to edit grub so that I could try booting with the previous
kernel.
The fact that I am able to write this shows that the previous kernel on
the very same machine boots without problem. This is the "previous"
working kernel:
$ uname -a
Linux localhost.localdomain 3.2.6-3.fc16.i686.PAE #1 SMP Mon Feb 13 20:44:23 UTC 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
The kernel that is failing is 3.2.7-1.fc16.i686.PAE
Below I have tried to type as accurately as possible the kernel panic
message that I get when I try to boot into the new kernel (note It's
typed manually - NOT copied and pasted - so i might have made the odd
typo).
What should I do?
I can think of no obvious hardware problem given the fact this the
machine boots happily with the previous kernel...
Thanks in advance...
Mark

the microphone -- I can view and hear the other call party, but she
cannot hear. Is there some way to repair this?
Thanks in advance,

Re: recommend some info on hot to upgrade from F15 to F16 using preupgrade
by Birger Monsen
usually it's as simple as running updatedb, then locate .rpmnew and fixing up any config file changes that didn't get applied automatically. then run preupgrade, and once the system is up repeat the same procedure to find new .rpmnew files.
when a package being updated discovers that some file from the already installed version has been changed, the new file is named with a .rpmnew suffix instead of overwriting your edits. this means that file doesn't get updated until you merge it with your changes manually. when upgrading to a new release it is important to do this merge both before and after since some config files could have changed enough that some service stops working.
