Cant write successfully to USB devices
by Robert Moskowitz
This is on a Lenovo X120e with current f17 patches.
Both to my SD slot and to USB drives very recently, writes to USB drives
is not working.
It seems to work. I can see the files and open them. Then I unmount
the device move it over to another system and that system cannot read
the files. For the SD card, I have tried removing the partition,
recreating it, and copying the files. It still fails.
Interesting, I successfully copied the files only my Galaxy III (New
Verizon software makes the III mount as a Win install device, but going
to 'Tethering' gets it mounted properly showing all directories) and
then mounted both the Galaxy and the SD card on the other system and
successfully copied files to the SD card and opened them.
The other system is back-leveled on F17. Don't know if this is a
software or hardware problem. But it is recent. Only early in the
week, I could copy files.
How can I troubleshoot this?

by Philippe LeCavalier
Hi Everyone.
I filed a bug report here
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=691189regarding this issue.
In a nutshell, after working in gnome-shell for some time using the
Activities function hangs gnome-shell.
Since this may be 'nouveau' related...

Fedora Game Day
by Michael Cronenworth
It's been a while (years?) since Fedora folks have gathered to best each
other.
Would anyone be interested in putting together a Fedora Game Day?
Game: 0ad
http://play0ad.com/
# yum install 0ad
I would be willing to host a server and play a few matches. The game can
support up to 8 people.
Anytime from 02:00 UTC to 06:00 UTC works best for me. This weekend
would be great, or anytime in the next few days. Reply to this message
if you can make it in my time range in the next week and I'll put
together a solid date.

How to facilitate iPhone file transfers in Fedora 17.
by linux guy
For whatever reason, iPhone 5 devices (and maybe more)
are not automatically mounted like they were for me in
Fedora 16.
After much research, I did the following to mount an iPhone 5 manually.
# yum install libimobiledevice
# idevicepair unpair&& idevicepair pair
dmesg then had something like this in it
usb 3-2.4: new high-speed USB device number 85 using xhci_hcd
[ 559.894437] usb 3-2.4: New USB device found, idVendor=05ac, idProduct=12a0

[ 560.753353] usb 3-2.4: ep 0x5 - rounding interval to 32768 microframes, ep desc says 0 microframes
I then mounted the device using ifuse as follows.
$ mkdir iphone
$ ifuse -ua10733b8ceb1656487ee7cdf532caad722243961 ./iphone
$ cd iphone
$ ls
AirFair Books Downloads iTunes_Control PhotoStreamsData Safari
Airlock com.apple.itunes.lock_sync HighlandPark PhotoData Purchases
ApplicationArchives DCIM iPod_Control Photos Recordings
I could then access the iPhone mountpoint in Dolphin or from the command line session as I desired.
I hope this helps someone.
I hope this procedure becomes unnecessary in Fedora 18 and iPhone 5s are mounted automatically.

laptops with 1200 vertical resolution
by Ranjan Maitra
Hi,
I will be in the market for a laptop pretty soon, and would like to
find a laptop with 1200 vertical resolution (at the very least). I
looked around a couple of websites (Dell, Toshiba, Thinkpad) some but
was unable to spot much (did not look at everything). Are these
available anymore? What would you recommend?
Many thanks,
Ranjan

Howto enable IPv6 privacy extensions
by Patrick Lists
Hi all,
On an up-to-date F17 x86_64 box I was testing IPv6 and it was pointed
out that the IPv6 address that Fedora uses is traceable because it ends
in the MAC address of the nic. I don't like that and want to enable
privacy extensions which should replace the MAC address with some random
stuff in the IPv6 address.
I added the following to /etc/sysctl.d/ipv6_privacy_extensions and rebooted:
net.ipv6.conf.default.use_tempaddr = 1
net.ipv6.conf.default.temp_prefered_lft = 7200
Unfortunately this does not work as I don't see an IPv6 address with
"scope global dynamic" and if I go to http://ip6.nl then it still shows
my IPv6 address with the MAC address in it.
Anyone know how to make this work?
Thanks,
Patrick

F17: no keyboard response, mouse/trackpad okay, can ssh in
by Joel Rees
After the problems of the last weekend, starting getting strange stuff
where the keyboard would freeze if sat on the screensaver login screen
too long. Problem got worse, and after (finally) getting a good (?)
yum update, and installing the GIMP, inkscape, libreoffice, and some
others, a reboot and no keyboard response at all. Not even switching
to a virtual screen.
I can ssh in and systemctl isolate multi-user.target and get a console
and the keyboard works just fine in the console, so it's an X11 issue.
Found an old thread for F17 where reloading the evdev stuff and
generating a new config (xorg -configure, I think) fixed a problem
with no keyboard/mouse, and I tried reloading xorg-x11-drv-evdev and
runing xorg -configure and got a segfault or something similar and no
new configuration file. (No xorg.conf to start with, FWIW.)
Haven't find any relavent error messages in /var/log so far.
Any ideas what's going on here?

Reconfiguring packages
by Frank McCormick
Having come from Debian unstable, the switch to YUM from Aptitude
is a bit disconcerting for me. So far I have managed but i have a question.
In Debian, a package can be reconfigured (package such as console-setup)
using dpkg-reconfigure. Can the same thing be accomplished
in Fedora. I have 2 Fedora installations, 17 and 18.
Thanks
