WiFi permanently disappeared after booting test kernel
by Mike Fleetwood
Hi,
On my netbook I booted a test kernel 3.8.0-rc4+ I compiled. Now after
booting back into my regular Fedora kernel 3.6.11-5.fc17.i686.PAE my
wifi network device remains permanently disappeared. No wifi networks
displayed in Network Manager gui. Also the Network Manager syslog
messages make it look like the device has completely disappeared.
Suggestions for restoring wifi welcome.
Thanks
Mike

losing WiFi Access - prompted for password
by SternData
F18...
Over the last few days, I'm getting prompted to re-enter my password for
my WiFi network. It's not the router because no other device on the
network seems to be having problems.
Potential changes on my system include

network-manager-applet-0.9.8.1-4.git20130514.fc18.x86_64
Given that this has really started the day before yesterday, I suspect
it has something to do with the NetworkManager update. Is anyone else
having this problem?
(Please -- do not tell me to "dump the evil NetworkManager". I'm trying
to solve a problem here, not make some stand against the tide. Thanks.)

Weird network problem
by Phil Dobbin
Hi, all.
I've got several machines on a LAN behind a NAT with DHCP assigning
always the same addresses from a dynamic IP.
A couple of days ago the IP changed & since then, one of the machines
running Fedora 17 always fails first time to connect to the network:
launch Thunderbird, no start screen, first attempt to check mail, it
tells me that there's no network connection, second attempt it connects.
The scheduled DejaDup backup always fails with no network but will run
manually no problem. Firefox can't find Google but the Nagios
web interface is fine as is all the cli stuff (ping, ssh, etc).
Most annoyingly, yum update goes through every mirror before partially
downloading part of the updates & if the updates are large, it takes
about three attempts to get them all installed.
I'd like to clear this up naturally especially as in the next couple of
weeks I'll be upgrading this box to Fedora 18 & the last thing I need is
a dodgy network connection.
All the machines below are on the same LAN & they all work fine after
the IP address change, it's only the Fedora box that's causing problems.
Any help appreciated. I'm stuck.
Cheers,
Phil...

What happened to floppy drive support?
by n2xssvv.g02gfr12930
I've been using a floppy boot disk as reserve if my HD boot fails, But
it appears floppy support as now been removed. Why? Then how can I
create an emergency media that is flexible enough to be updated as required?

Dual screen video display problem
by Robin Laing
Hello,
I have had a video display issue after an update a few months ago. I
cannot post from work due to mail filters so I am posting from another
account so responses will be slower.
Fedora 18, 64bit, clean install using nvidia graphics with Nouveau using
KDE. Both monitors are the same make and model. Purchased at the same
time.
Before the problem occurred, I would boot and get all messages on the
left screen until the X server started. If the screen saver locked the
screen, the unlock dialog box would be on the left screen (screen 0). I
could run KDE with effects enabled. The first indication of a problem
was the reboot after the kernel upgrade and error messages about the KDE
desktop effects not being able to run.
Due to work schedule, I couldn't deal with the problem before now.
Now, when I boot, the left display shows the BIOS boot and then the
displays enter mirror mode. When the X server kicks in and KDE starts,
the display goes to side by side as expected. The desktop works as side
by side when I can drag windows between the monitors and virtual
desktops as expected, just slower.
I cannot run any of the KDE desktop effects.
When the screen saver kicks in, it is a different screen savers on
each monitor, not one across both. Previously it was one screen saver
across both monitors. Using the Galaxy screen saver, the star movements
would go between the screens. Now there are two different galaxy scenes
and motions.
If I move the trackball, I get a unlock dialog box on both screens but
they are not mirrored. If I enter a password in to either dialog box,
the desktop unlocks.
I cannot use anything that requires a full screen such as You Tube
videos in a browser or any game.
I have gone through the settings in Grub and tried different desktop
settings. Nothing I can find on the net has pointed me in the right
direction on this matter.
This setup has worked flawlessly for two years now and worked well until
the update.
Due to this issue, the system runs slower when moving between screens or
virtual desktops. Lack of full screen is a pain for some things. No
Tux Extreme racer unless I want mirrored action.
I have tried changing the "GRUB_GFXMODE=" with no success.

Firewall and DNS caching without NetworkManager
by আনন্দ কুমার সমাদ্দার Ananda Samaddar
Hello all,
I've just installed Fedora 18 X86-64. I disabled and uninstalled
networkmanager and use the standard networking stuff which seems to
use dhclient. I'm using a standard ethernet connection.
So I need to do two things. Feel free to tell me to RTFM if you can
provide a link!
1. How do I enable pre-pending of nameservers? I want to use dnsmasq
to cache DNS requests so I need to add 127.0.0.1 to the top of
resolv.conf. Google searchs take me to the Arch Wiki. I can't seem to
find a dhclient.conf file anywhere in /etc.
2. How do I assign a zone in firewalld to my connection? I want to be
able to open ports for bittorrent and XMPP jingle voice/video. The
firewalld wiki on the Fedora site doesn't seem to be able to answer my
question.
thanks in advance,
Ananda Samaddar

Firewalld - list tables?
by John Horne
Hello,
I have been looking at the new Fedora firewall 'firewalld' and the
'firewall-cmd' command. I'm currently running F17 on a PC with an F18
virtual machine, and have been trying to understand firewalld prior to
upgrading to Fedora 19.
The PC has a modified iptables. So I have been trying to see how to
incorporate the changes into the new firewalld. I suspect I will need to
use the 'firewall-cmd --direct' option to add the iptables rules (as I
see no other way of specifying on the rules source/destination addresses
using 'firewall-cmd').
However, 'firewall-cmd' offers both the '--get-chains' and '--get-rules'
options, but these both require specifying which table is to be used.
How do I know what the tables are? There is no '--get-tables' option.
I can run 'cat /proc/net/ip_tables_names' and this lists the standard
iptables tables (nat ,mangle, filter). But if I use these names with
'firweall-cmd' all I get is a blank line displayed. E.g.
firewall-cmd --direct --get-chains ipv4 nat
The same occurs with all the table names.
So, my question is this, is 'firewall-cmd' working correctly and simply
stating that none of the tables have any chains (and so no rules)?
Secondly, how do I find out what tables are defined for firewalld?
Thanks,
John.

no printout, but no other hint of error. F18.
by William Mattison
Hi,
When I try to print anything out, I get no printout. Even a test page does not come out. But no indication of trouble shows up on the monitor, and no indication of trouble on the printer's display. I did download and install the driver. cups gives no hint of trouble that I recognize. If I restart the system and boot up with Windows 7 home, I do get printouts.
The printer is a Xerox WorkCentre 6015ni, I'm using Fedora-18, 64-bit, and the printer is connected to the system via usb bus. This is a stand-alone home desktop.
I'm neither trained nor experienced in sys. admin. I've exhausted the help I can get from the printer's manual (media and web site). Any help you can give will be appreciated.
Bill.

Fedora 18 on Dell XPS13
by Ranjan Maitra
Does anyone have any experience with F18 on a Dell XPS13 with the FHD
1080p display? What does this Full High-Definition 1080p mean
anyway? I guess my question is: is this the real resolution or some
virtual resolution not obtained via linux.
I am interested in this because it claims to have a 1080 vertical
resolution (not sure if this is accurate) in an Ultrabook.
Note that Dell sells this with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (for a price more than
with MS Windoze).

fedup from beta
by Richard Vickery
I hope this isn't in HTML - please alert me if it is; I don't know if
fedup changed the mail setup, and forget where Thunderbird's check-box
is to fix it.
I'm just curious as to how to fedup when F19 comes out; I am aware that
the command is
fedup F18->F19
however, this is the beta as opposed to F18. Of course, F18 is available
to boot into, and I guess users boot into that to use the command above.
I suppose I answered my own question.
