Dual head on F18: good and bad
by Bill Murray
Dear Fedora fans,
I have a dual head system with an HP monitor on DVI and
samsung on VGA.
It was working with both at 1280x1024, but gnome 3 in fallback mode.
Some update
last week suddenly brought the gnome-3 experience. Progress!
Unfortunately it also
no longer find the Samsung monitor correctly. I append below a snippet
from Xorg.log
from a month ago (top) and today (bottom).
I think /etc/X11/xorg.conf is deprecated. Can anyone suggest how I
force in higher
resolution now? Or guess what might _really_ be wrong?
Thank you,
Bill

Messed up Grub!
by Arthur Dent
Hello All,
I can't update my Fedora 17 box until sometime in July due to issues I
won't bore you with.
In the meantime I have another problem. Some time ago I had a crash
during a yum update, the net result of which was the fact that the
kernel it was installing at the time became corrupted (amongst other
problems). I can boot into the previous kernel and everything works
fine, except when I reboot. Naturally it wants to boot into the "latest"
kernel.
I have set the grub timeout to 5 seconds so I can select the older
kernel and all is well.
However, I thought I would be clever and set it to automatically boot to
the second kernel, so I edited /etc/default/grub and changed
GRUB_DEFAULT=saved to GRUB_DEFAULT=1.
I then ran grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg and rebooted. Now I
appear to have lost my earlier kernel options and it boots into the
corrupted version.
[edit] No wait - It seems I have to go into "advanced" options from grub
where I can pick the older kernel [/edit]
What did I do wrong - and how do I get it to default to my working
kernel?
Thanks
Mark

grub2-mkconfig not picking up all kernels
by Frank McCormick
Reposting on Fedora list because it's not only 19 affected
I noticed this morning that when I run grub2-mkconfig from my fedora 19
partition, or from my 18 partition
it does not find all the kernels on a fedora 17 partition. There are 3
in Fedora 17 /boot...3.8.11, 3.8.13 and the latest
3.9.5. It finds only the 3.8.11 kernel. Grub was installed in /dev/sda
from the 19 partition; I have since re-installed
Grub from the 18 partition and the same problem exists.
Is this a bug or am I missing something?

friperry/Alt F2
by Patrick Dupre
Hello,
I am using Fedora 18 and Frippery.
Every time that the screen lock is activated, after I recover the gnome
session, the date in the top panel is at a wrong position.
I can recover it properly by doing a Alt F2 (and r), but then, all my
gnome-terminal windows are moved inside a unique workspace
(I have typically 6 workspace).
Where is the "bug"?
Regards.

Performance and the hard disk size
by Paul Smith
Dear All,
Does the size of the hard disk affect Fedora's performance?
I am looking for a 2 T disk to replace my current disk, but some
people are warning me about performance; they say I should buy a disk
of at most 1 T. Are they correct?
Thanks in advance,
Paul

(no subject)
by Paul Smith
Dear All,
How can I see the total disk size of my hard disk?
I have used the following command:
# fdisk -l | grep Disk
Disk /dev/sda: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes, 1953525168 sectors
Disk identifier: 0x0003dd50
Disk /dev/mapper/fedora_new--host--5-swap: 6274 MB, 6274678784 bytes,
12255232 sectors
Disk /dev/mapper/fedora_new--host--5-root: 53.7 GB, 53687091200 bytes,
104857600 sectors
Disk /dev/mapper/fedora_new--host--5-home: 939.7 GB, 939712839680
bytes, 1835376640 sectors
#
Should I conclude that the size of my hard disk is 1 TB?
Thanks in advance,
Paul

polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 fails to start after F17->F18 update
by Corinna Vinschen
Hi,
I just updated a server machine from F17 to F18. This server is
running a local VNC session which I connect to via SSH. It's using
an XFCE4 desktop environment.
The machine is running a lot of virtual machines and so far there
was a virt-manager instance running in the VNC desktop.
After the upgrade to F18, virt-manager no longer starts:
Unable to connect to libvirt.
authentication failed: polkit: Authorization requires authentication
but no agent is available.
So I checked and, yes, there's actually no agent running, there's no
polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 process, as usual.
In the XFCE4 Session settings, starting the PolicyKit Authentication
Agent is activated. But polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 simply
doesn't start. When I try to start it from the command line, I only
get an error message:
$ /usr/libexec/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1
(polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1:5772): polkit-gnome-1-WARNING **:
Unable to determine the session we are in: No session for pid 5772
I know next to nothing about polkit. To get virt-manager working I added
a rule once:
$ cat /etc/polkit-1/rules.d/80-libvirt-manage.rules
polkit.addRule(function(action, subject) {
if (action.id == "org.libvirt.unix.manage"
&& subject.active
&& subject.isInGroup("libvirt")) {
return polkit.Result.YES;
}
})
but that is taken from information on the net, and it obviously can't
help when there's no agent running.
So, how can I fix this? How can I make polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1
start in my VNC XFCE4 session again?
Thanks for any help,
Corinna

Analyzing system shutdown
by Sam Varshavchik
Is there an equivalent of systemd-analyze for system shutdown processes.
Something on a couple of my machines takes about 20 seconds to wind down,
during a reboot or a shutdown, and I'd like to figure out what it is.

I didn't have any problems with that.

Stop accusing me of trolling. It's not my problem that you are unable
to understand arguments, and I'll save my time rather than giving
explanations because no matter what I might say, you'd only use it to
accuse me of trolling.
> in *this case* you had *some thousand* more packages
Yes, I'd have even more packages installed that I don't have use for.

And how would I disable it? Mdmonitor is stopped and disabled, and md
is still running.

So you don't have any real arguments for or experience with running
irqbalance other than what the manpage claims that it does. Instead of
proving some useful answers, all you can do is accuse ppl of trolling.

Ah yes, of course, that claim again, lol. Since you don't have any
arguments or facts, making silly claims is all you can do. That gets a
little boring and is pretty pitiful.
