This list's search engine not working?

Ever since I stumbled across this list, I seem to have major difficulties searching the archives. Say I want to see my posts to the list (they all have the same footer as below), I believe I could go to http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/ and enter "HaJo" as a search string. Searching in all sections, I get 0 results. Does the search engine ignore me by some reason? BTW -- I've been posting since about June, and when showing the archives sorted by author, I do find my posts. OK, not the most helpful to search for my own posts, but I do have the same issue when searching for given topics. Any other search engine out there indexing this list reliably? SATA optical drives

I'm currently running FC5, will probably upgrade to F7 in a couple of months. Unfortunately my CD/DVD rewriter appears to have died, before it's even seen a dual layer disk :'( SATA hard drives run without problems for me, but now that SATA optical drives are starting to appear in the shops, would it be OK to buy one of these and get rid of another wide ribbon cable? Is anybody already running them with Fedora? Thanks for any advice/experiences. Dave F

[FC8] ssh and CAC card???

Changing date with procmail

Anyone know of a procmail recipe to change the date on incoming messages? If the date is in the future by more than 24 hours - I'd like to just change it to the current date. If the date is in the past by more than two weeks - I'd like to just change it to the current date. I'd like to do it in procmail - if someone knows how. I've done some searching, still have some to do. Found some stuff on extracting the date, but not on modifying it if necessary.

Hi, http://www.sysresccd.org/Download With the SystemRescueCd I backed up the /dev/sda6 partition in /mnt/backup/ naming "diskimage" After backing up operation the file has the automatic extension like "diskimage.000". Is this file ok to restore? If I name it "diskimage.gz" then it is automatically renamed with this extension "diskimage.gz.000" But here below http://www.sysresccd.org/Screenshots the file is name like this: "diskimage.pimg" Do I have to name with the .pimg extension during backup to restore correctly? And how can I restore it?

VPN options

I am planning on running a Virtual Private Network from my Fedora firewall out to a UML virtual colo (running RH9) at another site. That site will be the place I present services to the world; httpd, ssh, sftp, smtp. This is to comply with the "no servers" and dynamic ip restrictions on my Comcast connection to the net; if my firewall always drives an outbound connection to the colocation site, I am not worried about changes of ip address, and I am not opening any inbound ports. There are a number of options for the VPN - the most attractive are cipe ( http://sites.inka.de/sites/bigred/devel/cipe.html ) and FreeSwan ( http://www.freeswan.org/ ), though I am told that one can do all this through an ssh tunnel. I would rather have simple and secure than super-duper; I have plenty of bandwidth, and will send outbound http and smtp from the firewall, so the main bandwidth user will be incoming spam/b/b/b/b mail. Anyone have some experiences to share about setting up VPN? Is there anything about either cipe or FreeSwan that is likely to break with FC1 or FC2? nc missing option -z

Hi, I used to use netcat to check if a particular host is up or if I have internet connection before I run a few scripts. I would use the -z option in particular. But now I see that has been removed: $ nc -z imap.gmail.com 993 && sync-my-email.sh ncat: invalid option -- 'z' Here is the excerpt from the old manual page: -z Specifies that nc should just scan for listening daemons, without sending any data to them. It is an error to use this option in conjunction with the -l option. Any ideas what happened to it? What can I use as replacement? Thanks for any ideas. -- Suvayu Open source is the future. Ranter or evangelist?

Why is it that, when I insert an audio disk, I see it as an audio disk on my desktop, but when I click it, GNOME shows the .wav files that are present. No application is suggested, even under "Open", to play the damned music. If I go to Application, sound and video, the first option, "Audio Player", opens XMMS. Great! I click the forward button... I'm presented with a list of the... no, no, no! not the files on the CD, but the files in my home directory!!! Wow, we're really moving forward! I painfully navigate to /media, there's nothing in /media. Let's check mtab, my DVD/CD is on sr0, I believe. Nope, nothing there. Well, if the intend was to scare away Mac and Windows users, I would think that the success rate is 100%. I've been using Linux for 8 years and even "I" am scared! I do understand Fedora is for geeks, but would it make their life that difficult if things kinda worked? Didn't anybody notice that the present set-up makes absolutely no sense? At least, normally, you should go to => System, Preference, File Management, Media to select a default CD and DVD player. Still impossible! No option to change anything. I wrote about this. Nobody replied. Who's responsible for setting things this way? Is anyboby responsible somewhere or is it "We do all this together in a haphazard way" ? If so, never expect any significant market share for Linux. Radio-Canada will continue to use Windows Media because "Linux is too hard for ordinary people" (MSFT trademark). You think I'm a ranter? I've been told this quite often. But, while some people write code, I write to the Quebec Press Council. I explain that a certain so-called journalist is just a Microsoft sycophant. Every time he used Windows Vista, of course, there were a few... almost bugs. but certainly no show stopper. With Linux, the question is more complex. When a new version of Firefox comes out, for instance, instead of waiting for the upgrade, he gets the executable at Mozilla and, then, everything gets really complicated. Of course, the Press Concil understands perfectly what's going on. I made sure my basic complaint was very easy to understand: I explained the journalist NEVER discussed the appropriateness for the State -- television, amongst others -- of using proprietary format and never discussed tied sales. That's it, that's all. Still, after counceiding that the Press organisation lawyers had well understood my POV, the Council judged that the journalist gives a lot of coverage to Linux -- they didn't elabore on the kind of coverage: they can't evaluate, of course -- and, you know, given that Linux hardly has 1% of the market share, they found the coverage was adequate. So, I filed an appeal... and sent a copy to the Professional Federation of Journalists... I got my appeal. But the fight is far from over. The Press Council is heavily subsidized by the employer of said journalist, and Radio-Canada, another member of the Microsoft club. Seeing subsidies vaporize scares the shit out of those learned men: they could lose their precious jobs! So, they'll try every trick in the book to give a very mild tone to their judgement. But I have a few other tricks in my book to set the records straight, though having the support from the Linux community would certainly help. Cause... do you really believe I got any help from local coders for this fight? I got none, absolutely NONE. Why? Cause I'm a ranter. In other words, though I am not a programmer, when I see things that are not done correctly, I say so. They tell me I should fix the bugs. Why is it that there are so many programmers and I can't even set a default application for reading CD and DVDs? While I'm alone to do what I consider my job, why is it that the whole community doesn't get its act together to do such simple things? Sometimes I wished I could proselytize in a more positive way. I'd like to tell Apple users that Linux equals or surpasses OS X in user friendlyness, but it doesn't. It was like this ten years ago, it is still like this now. Countrary to what we could think from the success of Steve Jobs at the helm of Apple, in the Linux world, the only people who count are programmers. They'll fix things... soon. But Linux is not so young anymore. After 18 years, it has 1% market share. I believe there are some organizational bugs that need to be ironed out. For now, from an administrative POV, Linux is a merry-go-round that doesn't make much sense. What do you say, am I a ranter or an evangelist? Is it good for Linux to be ruled by programmers, the alternative not being necessarily the marketing department? :) Red Hat has some clout. How come they don't say "We want a music player that first detects CD files and plays them" and accept to include them on the default CD only on this condition? Etc., etc., etc.

Setting up HP laserjets (1012) to work with Fedora 11

Unrelated to topic: I lost quite a bit of messages downloading them from Altern to Thunderbird and not being able to upload afterwards* but I would like to thank Todd Zullinger for reminding me that welcome messages are not just a way for forums owner to be polite :) But somethimes, you have many things to read... * ping smtp.altern.org ping: unknown host smtp.altern.org This used to work, but not anymore, according to lantre.org. So, I'll have to set up a Gmail account. Later. ----------------------------- Setting up HP laserjets (1012) to work I discovered a bug with the setting of my printer, an HP 1012. The configuration seemed really easy as it was identified correctly on a USB Port. A few clicks, and I was done. I didn't even check to see if it worked: I never had a problem setting this printer for years. Then, I tried to print and I had a message saying that the printer wasn't connected. Weird: CUPS was installed, the wire was OK. I went back to configuration and I saw there's an option for using HAL, the Hardware Abstraction Layer. I do believe HAL has always been part of setting my printer. So, I selected it but received the message that the HPIJS driver was not available. (Note that I tried the Gutenprint driver when the printer wasn't set to use HAL: it didn't work.) I installed hpijs, now everything is fine. I don't remember ever being asked to use HAL with another distro: it was always put to contribution, I suppose. So, there must be a way around this. Most newbies will never consider an option that isn't selected by default for a printer. Most probably other printers that use HPIJS have the same problem. Those that use ppd files, probably not.

Did I really install Kmod-Nvidia ?

There are all sorts of instructions as to how to install Kmod-Nvidia on Fedora, but I thought yum would do a better job of guessing my configuration (x86_64, 9400 GT) to get the most up-to-date correct package and getting everything right. So, I just typed: yum install kmod-nvidia Now, /etc/X11/xorg.conf looks like this: # Xorg configuration created by livna-config-display Section "Files" ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia" ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules" EndSection Section "ServerFlags" Option "AIGLX" "on" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Videocard0" Driver "nvidia" Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True" EndSection Section "Extensions" Option "Composite" "Enable" EndSection The file is only a few minutes old... So, I suppose it's a new config for the Kmod driver. But the process was so transparent, I can't help but wonder if all those modifications to the kernel that I read about in the doc have been made. If so, why not provide the documentation that all that is needed is to type the yum command? The Nouveau driver worked very well and, since I'm not too sure I'll install 3D, maybe I could have kept it. But my screen kept blanking once in a while for a few seconds. This happened with my previous computer too -- it had an old ATI card, the same monitor and a very standard open source driver for ATI -- but not so often and not for so long: it was just a quick blank. I thought this might fix the problem. Also, I intend to install a TV card and, it anything doesn't work, I'm sure the first suggestion from Nvidia will be to install their driver. As the material I buy is only on a one week money back guarantee, I prefer to make sure everything works in advance. Also, as it often happens when I download new packages, there was a socket error and a long (~ 1-2 min) halt before another server took over. (I forgot to save the console screen before I rebooted, but the name "liberty" was part of it.) After the installation finished, the rx/tx light of the modem began flashing very fast as if there was a download occuring... or maybe an upload if some information on the installation has to be sent back to rpmfusion or nvidia. No indication of what was going on appeared onscreen. Is this anything to be concerned about? Any idea What this transfer was about?

Hi all Fedora users, I have just joined this list. I am running the latest Fedora but I can't get my 3C900Combo networking card to work. I can see that the card is installed but no IP-address is asigned to it and I can't set it. So I think that there is a bug in that driver. Any other user out there who have a solution for this? RAGE XL Framebuffer

Hi all I know that is not a specific question about Fedora, but I can't find answer on the kernel mailing list. Is somebody having server with integrated ATI RAGE XL video card? Is it possible to patch the kernel to support this video card? If I add VGA=791 in my grub.conf, I will have a resolution of 1024x768 which is good, but the display is very slow (especially when the screen is scrolling). If I use I this: "video=aty128fb:1024x768@70" it will not work. I'm using kernel 2.4.22 but I will try 2.6.0-test11 today. If somebody has a patch, a link or anything else that can help me, it will be appreciated. Thanks for your help. Soundblaster

I have two similar PC (old Pentium but workin fine) In Pc no.1 I upgraded from RH8 to Fedora and it went fine: Soundblaster is working fine In Pc no.2 I made a fresh installation but in redhat-sound-config Fedora doesn't see any card, that was working on Redhat 9 after soundconfig... Where is the trick?? I assume that my Sounblaster is an old 16...but fine on a router/firewall. Tnx Antonio

WiFi permanently disappeared after booting test kernel

Hi, On my netbook I booted a test kernel 3.8.0-rc4+ I compiled. Now after booting back into my regular Fedora kernel 3.6.11-5.fc17.i686.PAE my wifi network device remains permanently disappeared. No wifi networks displayed in Network Manager gui. Also the Network Manager syslog messages make it look like the device has completely disappeared. Suggestions for restoring wifi welcome. F19 install and custom / RAID partitioning

Hi folks. I'm building a F19 box to replace my dead Bacula server and I'm trying to emulate as close as possible the F17 install I did then. However, this install UI is different and I've got a small probem. I've got 2 x 3TG drives sda and sdb. I've selected both drives (sda defaulted to boot device) Selected Standard Partitioning I'm in manual partitioning have done 1) + Mount point = /biosboot capacity = 1MB got this bit by googling a previous error partition put on sda1 2) + Mount point = /boot capacity = 50GB Device type = RAID /biosboot is moved to sda2 3) + Mount point = SWAP capacity = 6GB Device type = RAID /biosboot is moved to sda3 4) + Mount point = / capacity = 100GB Device type = RAID /biosboot is moved to sda4 5) + Mount point = /var/bacula capacity = blank (default to remaining space) Device type = RAID At this point I press "Update settings" to store the details for the last partition. As soon as I press the button it goes wrong and either removes some of the partitions or all of them and I get the message Storage configuration reset due to unrecoverable error. Click for details On clicking I then get the message Can't have overlapping partitions. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to sort this.

hello I have two DVDs which contains AVI files. I can't read it in my fedora box but it works in gentoo and windows. I used the DVD drive and the DVDs before so I don't think it is a HW problem. Using wodim - get error opening /dev/sr0

I'm trying to use wodim to write or blank a cdrom. When I execute $ sudo wodim dev=/dev/sr0 blank=all I get the following error: Error trying to open /dev/sr0 exclusively (Device or resource busy)... retrying The same thing happens when I use K3B. It says it cannot get exclusive control over the device. I can't find any process which is using /dev/sr0. fuser returns nothing. Broadcasts and netmask

I have a Fedora 20 machine which is receiving UDP broadcast packets at regular intervals on a high port. No program is presently listening for these packets. If I run, "tcpdump -iany port 29531", I see each of the packets arriving just as I expect. But if I then use Ncat as a surrogate for an application, "nc -lup 29531", I sometimes don't see anything! Why not? (More details below.) What obvious thing am I missing? The machine has ten Ethernet ports, two Broadcom BCM5716 and eight Intel 82576. The Broadcom ports are using the bnx2 driver, the Intel ports use the igb driver. Connecting the cable from the broadcast sender to any one of the ports, I get the exactly same behavior. Without assigning the port an address, tcpdump shows that the UDP broadcast packets are received but they are not forwarded to an application. I received a SELinux alert today which said: SELinux is preventing /usr/local/bin/snort from search access on the directory logs. hi everybody I thought I could easily (as easily as I could do that with libcgroup) permanently restric a user to a specific cpu core. I thought it would be CPUAffinity responsible for it either in systemd-user-sessions or(and) in systemd-logind but it does not work, is it possible to have user(s) sessions permanently restricted in this way? so his/her processes would be executed only on given core? if yes then how would you do this? please shed some light thanks P

System is f19 remix on armv7 (Allwinner A20). The <windows key + l> which is what I use in F20 on x86 with Gnome. So does ldxe use a different lock screen keystroke, or is something else going on here.

Importing mail archive into Thuderbird

I am asking this here, as my system is F20 with Thunderbird 24.7.0. I have downloaded an month's archived messages for Centos-arm and want to import them into Thunderbird where I could then respond to them more easily. I tried the Tools>Import but when I select email, nothing is listed in the dialog box. So how might I do the import? Where might i find instructions?

abrt questions??

Hi. Doing some tests on fed/centos boxes.. Running a test app, that in turn kicks off a bunch of python apps.. The test is long running. for hours! However, somewhere along the way, the py apps die/crash. In looking over the /var/log/messages logs, I see the abrt indicating it's captured data for the crash, but it seems to also then delete the data it collected. An example of what I'm seeing is below. I'm trying to figure out what parameters I can set, and where I need to set the attributes, to be able to capture/analyse the resulting data to figure out why the test py app is crashing.. Thoughts/comments would be useful.. using USB memory

Hi, I have some problems to use USB memories . Fedora recognize automatically thr USB pen that I plug inside a USB socket: ..... I can see it as Bus 002 Device 003: id 0781:5575 SanDisk Corp as result of command "lsubs". I can also go inside it using Nautilus, and to work with the files stored inside it *but only if I use Nautilus*. Instead I cannot use this pen by the terminal (using commands line). If I execute : ls /mnt/dir_where_is_mounted, I don't see the files that are inside the pen.., .. the output is not rigth .... I thougth it necessary to mount manually the USB pen for achieve this targhet but I didn't get success also in this way... *Can some one explain me how tho work with my USB pen *by command line**? We need (manually) to mount the USB devices (memory flash, Hard Disk, ..) to achieve some purpouse ? Regards Thank you Angelo

Email issues

I think my email server is working and accepting emails, but my workstation that connects to said email server, via evolution and through dovecot, is no longer receiving emails, and no configurations have changed. python error in updated yum FC20

I installed Fedora 20 yesterday, and after the installation was done, I installed a few packages successfully and then updated all the packages, and then shut down Today when I first turned on the machine, I tried installing the remaining stuff I want, and I got a python error, to wit: File "/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/yum/i18n.py", line 1 SyntaxError: Non-ASCII character '\xfb' in file /usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/yum/i18n.py on line 2, but no encoding declared; see http://www.python.org/peps/pep-0263.html for details I took a look at i18n.py, and it's a binary file, which couldn't be right. There's no i18n.pyo, but there is a i18n.pyc. It seems to me I might be able to reinstall python from the rpm, but I'm not sure about this. I recently moved my Fedora 20 root filesystem to a bcache device, and I discovered a bug (limitation?) that sometimes prevents my system from booting properly. screen program sending garbage

I am using the 'screen' program to interface with a USB serial device to my armv7 console (Cubieboard 2). This worked just fine friday morning with: screen /dev/ttyUSB0 115200 Later friday, I reconnected everything and working with a new build, any typing on my part was displayed as garbage characters and the system acted as such. Display from the console was just fine; all the messages were proper characters (I had copy to logfile on). Today, after a 'yum udpate' and system reboot the same behaviour. I was able to try this on another system and there the input is just fine. I have tried different USB ports on this computer, and still garbage. So what might be happening. I started with minicom, and that actually would not send anything at 115200 and was recommended to use screen that did work for half a day (and works fine on another system). How might I trouble shoot this or use instead of 'screen'.

Can I install with a custom partition with the XFCE Spin Live CD -- Fedora 20? I have the CD and had started the installation and after selecting the language I get a summary that says automatic partitioning has been selected. I never saw an opportunity to choose a custom layout -- which anaconda used to offer. This is an old dual boot laptop. I want to save all that, and to save my old home directory. Cannot add a hard disk during fedora installation

Hi, I am trying to install Fedora 20 on my new purchase computer- DELL xps 8700 (i7-4790, 16GB DDR3, 2TB 7200 RPM SATA hard drive. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750Ti 2GB DDR5). Computer was pre-installed with windows 8. I partitioned HD such that the unallocated HD space is 1.5TB, there is also a SSD with 30GB of unallocated space. I choose secure Boost off in BIOS to install FEDORA from DVD. However, the installation destination cannot find any available HD. There was message showing "No disk detected". I have used DELL's online and offline diagnosis tool to check the computer and no error was reported. I've also tried Fedora 15 and Fedora 19 but have no luck to install successfully. Anyone can comment on this and give me a hint? Thanks, Gary

CPU fan running at full speed

As of updating to kernel-3.15.5-200.fc20.x86_64, the cpu fan (and probably the case fan too) continuously runs at full speed, right from the system start. This behaviour is still present with the the most recent kernel 3.15.6-200..., but it wasn't with the former version 3.14.8-200... (I re-checked this by downloading this package from Koji and manually installing it). It's a desktop system with an Asus B85M-G board and an Intel i3-4330 CPU. The symptoms might be similar to a recent bugzilla report, which hasn't been commented yet: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1121331 Has anyone experienced something similar?

Problem with GNUstep on Fedora 20?

Hello, I found no gnustep mailing list on fedora, so I posted this mail here. I have run into an issue with GNUstep on fedora 20. I had gnustep installed from the latest sources in Fedorac19, and everything worked fine. After moving from fedora 19 to 20, when executing some programs, they linked to a wrong version of libpng, so I recompiled my GNUstep programs. Everything seems to work fine but when scrolling up/down or left/right I get the text smeared out in the scrolling area (see attached screenshot). On the gnustep mailing list, it was suggested that I had some remainders of an old install (since this scrolling problem was known, but supposed to be solved a while ago), or GNUstep had issues with the libcairo version that was used in Fedora. To exclude the libcairo issue, I am looking to someone who recently recompiled the latest version of GNUstep under fedora 20? I noticed there were rpm‘s for gnustep, but it looks like are based on an older version of GNUstep. Thanks in advance Edwin Ancaer

VM not accepted by NFS server -

I've created an Centos7 VM in this updated Fedora-20 box. NFS always works without a hitch however I can't mount the server from the VM. [root@localhost bobg]# mount 192.168.1.8:/home/bobg/ /mnt/HOME1/ mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting 192.168.1.8:/home/bobg/ Nothing changes, the hardware is a constant, but it says the server "denies access" and I can't see why, where can I be going wrong? Claws mail and SSL certificates

When acessing my mail, news or whatever from Claws Mail, I invariably get at message, telling that the SSL certificate is unknown. However, connecting to the same server with openssl s_client -connect rollo.jernurt.dk:993 -verify 5 results in a complete verification of the certificate chain, ending with the root CA. The root ca is include in ca-certificates, so I would expect Claws to check there, rather than bothering me with accepting the same certificate over and over again. Of course this should be standalone and opensource and should able to use external tools as well. I've already tried lighttable and sublimetext but none of them is perfect... any working idea? After various analyzes I have discover that the service ModemManager.service has been disabled. systemctl enable and start it and the problem is left. Hi all, This is my first mail on fedora mailing list. I can't get the following to display colours with LESS command on my terminal, when viewing man pages. I am using Fedora 20 with KDE. vnc not into gnome but Xfce but still not working

OK. I believe I figured out what is wrongish. I normally run gnome, so in my ~/.vnc/xstartup I have: exec gnome-session & as the last line. But this fedora 20 arm system is running Xfce! So after a quick google search, I changed that to: exec xfce4-session & But still I get vnc having a blank screen. Taking the BTRFS plunge

As a ZFS on Linux user, I noticed that there are btrfs packages for Fedora 20. Can anybody here comment on their stability? Are you adventurous enough to use btrfs on root ? Has it saved your data? Have you lost data because of it? Context: I'm planning on moving /home on my laptop to ZFS/BTRFS soon. Ben

Today I noticed for the first time that I'm getting the following messages in /var/log/messages on one of my F19 systems. Jul 23 10:55:03 terrapin kernel: [ 122.662105] device p3p1 entered promiscuous mode Jul 23 10:55:08 terrapin kernel: [ 127.669312] device p3p1 left promiscuous mode These messages occur every 5 minutes and last 5 seconds. I have 2 other F19 systems running on the same network that do not show these messages. The system that is seeing this problem is a Dell Inspiron 7537. Anyone seen something similar? I have attached the output of ps axlw in case someone can see which process might be doing this. partitioning

Hi all, I am an SA in training and ive been reading a lot about the importance of separating out your workspace/server into separate partitions such as /, /data, /home, /ftp, /usr, /boot vs dividing it into just a /, /boot, /data. and it seems that doing it how Ive been reading about with more partitions is more secure but what about when one partition becomes full? isnt that more of a problem vs one big /data partition where that is not an issue? what would you guys say the best solution would be? also read that you want to have twice as much swap as RAM and that dividing swap into 2 partitions helps with performance. is this true? thanks

Hello, I have 2 machines running fedora 20, one from 2007 with a dual processor and 3 Go, and a recent one (2013) with a quad processor an 8 Go. But it is a lot more convenient to use the old machine!!! The recent one is always busy, 4 processors running 53.1 55.9 /usr/bin/python -Es /usr/sbin/setroublesootd -f and the memory becomes full quickly requiring swapping!! 8 Go for the OS and firefox! Something is wrong. Should I kill setroublesootd? What is wrong? I cannot see. OK. New day, new testing. I can get IPv4 setup quickly and routing right. Yeah me (with a little help from my friends I got by)! Problems with Fedora 20

Couple of things seem to have gone awry. I think Ubuntu update to 14.04 has messed around with Fedora 20 grub boot because booting now takes for ever and defaults to Ctrl D to Continue or root password for maintenance, then takes 30-50 seconds to boot. 2nd, With the latest updates and kernel-3.15.5-200.fc20.x86_64 something seems wrong. The machine used to be quite fast but now is very slow. Any processes like opening and deleting emails, screen refresh, opening or closing files is very slow and the hard drive is working overtime with every mouse click or key press. CPUs are running at 20-50%, memory runs at 85%, temp directory is running overtime. Whereas performing the same in ubuntu 14.04, 386 memory runs around 35%, cpu's 20-50%, no hard drive temp used at all, and emails open and delete immediately. I have cleaned repositories, removed unused files and software in both setups, run sudo yum autoclean, sudo yum clean packages. top shows nothing untoward. I am running 3.15.4-200.fc20.x86_64 for this email and the system seems to be better but the hard drive works overtime with each change. kernel-3.14.8-200.fc20.x86_6 produces inode errors and boot fails. There is a command to rebuild grub boot but I don't remember the details, can someone please point me to how this should be done. What should I look for as to why the system is not operating as before. Help much appreciated thanks Roger

Figuring out a headless server's zeroconf addr

I have a headless system that I cannot connect to. So I was thinking to put a direct connection to it and my notebook. Both ethernets would use the zeroconf (169.254.0.0/16) addresses. I could then use fping fping -g 169.254.0.0/16 And SHOULD be able to get its address, and then SSH into the box. Any other thoughts? I can't get to the box to recable it and reboot it (as that is the only way I can figure out for it to readdress eth0) until this evening.

NFS Performance Woes

Hi, I've been unable to track down an extremely annoying performance issue with NFS. My home server has several exports shared over NFS4. The exports are all secured using Kerberos except one, which can be mounted using the traditional sys security model. The problem is that write performance stalls at 48k/sec (or according to nfsiostat 4k/sec) despite being on a 1Gbit network and once this occurs, nothing I do seems to fix it. The only thing that does, is rebooting the client machine. This has been occurring for a year or so now but is happening so regularly now, it's driving me nuts! :-) I'm fairly sure it's a client side issue, because rebooting the client allows normal transfer speeds once again. If I only reboot the server it makes no difference. My client is F19, the server is F20. After rebooting the client, write transfers can be fine for a day or so and then all of a sudden it hangs around 48k/sec again. Restarting all the NFS daemons on the client makes no difference, including the associated RPC daemons. The NFS exports are mounted via autofs, but manually mounting makes no difference either. When I'm experiencing slow writes to the server of 48k/sec, NFS reads are still in the region of 100MB/sec. Using scp or even copying files to the server via CIFS are well within the range of a 1Gbit network. Nfsstat, wireshark and the system logs do not show anything which screams there's a problem. The network card in the client machine and the server shows no collisions, dropped packets, frame overruns etc. I've tested with the export that isn't using Kerberos and still have the same issue. Messing with the rsize, wsize, async, sync parameters makes no difference either. The server has 32GB RAM, the client 16GB. For all intents and purpose it looks like its working as it should, it's just painfully slow. Any NFS gurus out there, that can tell me what I'm doing wrong? -- Ian Chapman.

vncserver not providing gnome desktop

Progress made. In the end I had to get IPv4 addressing working, as VNC only understands IPv4. I am connecting over the crossover cable to the headless system via vnc, but the screen just shows the little action box on the upper left and nothing else. I have edited the service file and added the geometry line option and reloaded the deamons. No change. I edited the xstartup file as I always do to exec gnome, but nope. I am missing something here. Obviously... any tips are greatly appreciated.

running vncserver via systemctl on Fedora 20

I have run vncserver for years, naturally as 'service vncserver start'. But now it is all systemd and systemctl. Fine. So I think I have to configure it for my user, as I always use to edit /etc/sysconfig/vncserver with: VNCSERVERS="2:alice 3:bob" So I found I had to: cp /lib/systemd/system/vncserver@.service /etc/systemd/system/vncserver@.service but I could not figure out what I needed to edit in this file. So I tried to start the service with: systemctl start vncserver And got: Failed to issue method call: Unit vncserver.service failed to load: No such file or directory. So what am I missing? Also in ~/.vnc/xstartup I changed the execute to: exec gnome-session & But the xstartup is created the first time I would start the server... So things are really working differently and I would appreciate some pointers. thanks

I have to install Matlab on a Fedora 20 machine and I need to rename the network device to eth0, or else Matlab won't install. NFS with latest kernel refusing mount requests

Just updated this system to kernel-3.15.6-200 and the NFS exported home directory on it all of a sudden can't be mounted from any other system on my network. Rebooted to the previous 3.15.5-200 kernel and it's back to normal. We have some legacy stuff using NIS and automounted directories, mostly SciLinux 6.5 stuff. Log entry: Jul 21 07:32:15 <hostname> rpc.mountd[16359]: refused mount request from <ipaddress> for /export/home (/export/home): unmatched host I looked at /etc/exports, /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/nsswitch.conf, nothing seemed out of place and since it's working in the previous kernel I suspect something in the new kernel is causing the issue. Nothing else that got updated this morning seems to be a likely cause. Running a "getent netgroup <netgroup_name>" gave me the expected results which included the system trying to mount the shared directory. NONE of the official howtos, forums, whatever around contains a usable, step by step description of what should be done to connect Base to a local mariadb / mysql database which is running and already accessible from the same computer, both from the command line and from php through the local web server. The closest I've got, AFTER already doing plenty of searches for any variant of mysql, libre office and the several error messages below, is: (configuring the connect to existing database mysql connect using jdbc database name: mydb server: localhost port number 3306 MySql JDBC Driver class: com.mysql.jdbc.Driver (and when I click on "Test Class" I get "the jdbc driver was loaded successfully") user name marco, password required yes Then I click on "Test Connection" I get SQL Status: 08S01 Communications link failure the last packet sent successfully to the server was 0 milliseconds ago. The driver has not received any packets from the server. First I thought the problem could be on the fedora side (maybe something in selinux/firewall) but why would it work both on the command line and on http/php from the same machine? that's why I am also asking here. This morning I installed updates which came with a new kernel, and all attempts to ping generate this: tomh> ping marmot ping: icmp open socket: Operation not permitted I now have to use sudo in front of ping to make it work. What the heck happened with this round of updates? (I see iputils was also an update this morning).

openconnect (2 issues)

Hi, I have been using the openconnect option to Cisco's Anyconnect VPN, but have noticed two shortcomings. 1. When I lose connection for whatever reason, I have to manually restart the anyconnect plugin everytime. Is there a possibility to have it reconnect along with the connection? 2. When I am on ppp, I am unable to use it at all. Cisco's VPN, however does not seem to care whether the connection is Wifi or ethernet or ppp and so works. Right now, I am on ppp, so I am back to using Cisco's VPN. Any suggestions on how to get around these two issues? For the record, I am running a fully-updated F20. FYI, i'm using BTRFS for over a year, Even though it is not a fedora machine, the upstream code remains the same I guess. Why no getty on tty1 after using X

I'm running CentOS 7 in QEMU-KVM just as a play area / test bed. It boots up in multi-user.target and I can access all virtual terminals. If I change to the graphical.target, then I see Gnome's login screen on VT1 and console logins on others. If I now login using VT2 and go back to multi-user.target with systemctl start multi-user.target then the login screen on VT1 disappears, but there is no getty running on it. I have to manually start it with systemctl start getty(a)tty1.service. My question is - why? Shouldn't getty start automatically when I attempt to access VT1? Thanks in advance, Gareth

Here are the five things for July 15th, 2014: Fedora and Docker ----------------- The various Working Groups in Fedora have been talking quite a bit about Docker recently. (In case you haven’t seen all the hype, Docker is a platform for distributing and running application containers — a form of light-weight operating system-level virtualization. It also features a cute whale as its logo.) In the Fedora Cloud WG, we’re planning on producing *official* Fedora Docker base images — these will be produced and uploaded by Fedora Release Engineering. Right now, because Docker is a key part of the upcoming Project Atomic-based *Fedora Atomic*, the Cloud SIG is doing the initial work and QA, but, eventually, the plan is to hand this off to the Environments and Stacks WG, because it looks like Docker and containerization will be important across much of Fedora in the future. Is this proof that systemd is completely broken?

Now that I have your attention, the background is as follows. This is a server with only statically configured network interfaces. NetworkManager is not installed. All network interfaces are statically configured via /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts. The server is regularly updated to current Fedora packages. For the last month, or so, the server has failed to come up in a sane state, reliably. After it responds to pings, after ssh-ing in, and examining the aftermath, the logs of all network services are consistent, in that they claim that each network service – which includes: named-chroot, httpd, dhcpd, and privoxy – their boot logs claim that no network interfaces were up at the time they're started. After finally getting pissed about having to manually re-brain the server, each time it boots, I attached a console monitor, and observed that the boot goes /very/ quickly, and the console login prompt comes up about 20-30 seconds before the server even starts responding to pings. Looks like the multi-user target is reached way long before networking even comes up. Last week, I've commented on the following curiosity: after sifting through systemd's documentation, their documentation claims that "network.target" gets reached only after basic networking is up, and "network-online.target" gets reached only after all network interfaces are initialized. Problem number one is that all servers specify "After=network.target", when, according to how I interpret this, they should all really specify "After=network-online.target". After that, it came to my attention that there's a NetworkManager optional subpackage that installs a service that waits for network interfaces to come up, and it's specified as "Before=network.target network-online.target". It seems fairly obvious to me that it should really be "Before=network- online.target" and "After=network.target", with all other services that require a functioning network specifying "After=network-online.target". That made logical sense to me, but it seems that this confusing arrangement makes logical sense to someone else, so, whatever. I do not have NetworkManager installed, but, I figure, why not take a crack at whipping up a dirty hack that basically does the same thing? But the unexpected result from the hack is that it seems to provide solid proof that systemd's dependency resolution is not working, but before I Bugzilla this (as little hope one might have from getting anything useful done by Bugzillaing this), I'd like to hear some consensus that I am interpreting the following data right. Who knows, I might actually have made a mistake, somewhere. Let's take a look at what named-chroot.service says: [Unit] Description=Berkeley Internet Name Domain (DNS) Wants=nss-lookup.target Before=nss-lookup.target After=network.target Are we all in agreement that named-chroot.service should only be started after network.target gets reached? Ok. Now, here's my hack, which is basically a clone of that NetworkManager subpackage: # cat /etc/systemd/system/wait-for-network.service [Unit] Description=Wait for network ports to be initialized Before=network.target network-online.target [Service] Type=oneshot ExecStart=/root/bin/wait-for-network [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target Are we all in agreement that: 1) This is a one-shot service, and according to systemd's documentation, systemd must wait until this script is complete, before it's considered started. 2) Until it's complete, network.target isn't reached. 3) Therefore, this script must finish before systemd should start named- chroot.service Yet, after testing this script, then activating it, the server still came up utterly brainless after the reboot. The results: systemctl status named-chroot.service reports: named-chroot.service - Berkeley Internet Name Domain (DNS) Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/named-chroot.service; enabled) Active: active (running) since Sat 2014-07-12 09:24:29 EDT; 3min 28s ago … So, systemd started named-chroot.service at 09:24:29. My script logs the current timestamp. The output from /root/bin/wait-for- network was as follows: Sat Jul 12 09:24:27 2014 Interface: lo is up Sat Jul 12 09:24:32 2014 Interface: lan0 is up Interface: lo is up Interface: wan0 is down Sat Jul 12 09:24:37 2014 Interface: lan0 is up Interface: lo is up Interface: wan0 is up systemd started this script at 09:24:27. This script spun its wheels until 09:24:37, at which time all network interfaces finally came up. I'm happy to post the contents of this short script; however I don't think that it's relevant here, because the problem is that this script was running when systemd decided to run named-chroot.service, even though, according to the above, this should not happen. So, either I'm misreading the description of "oneshot" in systemd.service(5); and "Before" and "After" in systemd.unit(5), or systemd is broken completely. I think that my understanding of systemd's documentation is very reasonable. So, either systemd is broken, or, if it's supposedly working how it should be working, its documentation is crap, and is impossible to follow. I see no other possibilities.

When I send a job to it, it doesn't work and, in the list of the jobs, I can read (on the field state) this message: processing since Wed 16 Jul 2014 06:07:59 PM IDT "Unable to locate printer "hostname"." Does the gpg-agent keeps the keys unlocked for the session?

Hello, I was wondering if gpg-agent on your system keeps the keys unlocked for the session. My experience is that it doesn't. According to the documentation, the passphrase cache would be removed in 2 hours [1]. I am using gpg encrypted KWallet and according to KWallet's upstream developer the passphrase remains cached on his system for the session. Please see the bug report for more information [2]. My only guess is that his distribution might be making choice on his behalf. How does your Fedora box behave? Are you asked to re-enter gpg passphrase after sometime? Or does it tend to keep cache for the session? pulse is silent, alsa works, any hints for fixing pulse?

Ever since I installed the nvidia binary driver to get video working on my GTX 750Ti card, the audio is screwed up. If I suspend pulse and run alsamixer to unmute all the built in audio devices on the motherboard, I can play audio fine with a command line: aplay -Dplug:front But if I run pluseaudio, and set the output to the motherboard's analog stereo output, I get no sound. Is there any procedure for translating cryptic working alsa into differently cryptic working pulse? Is there some way to convince snd_hda_intel to utterly ignore the nvidia display port/hdmi and only recognize the natic motherboard audio?

EFI: how to dual boot without esc, F9 ?

New HP laptop, W 8.1, EFI boot. I've installed F20. The laptop boots to Windows. If I hit ESC and f9, I get: - OS Boot Manager - Fedora 20 [HDD SERIAL NUMBER] - Boot from EFI file When I choose Fedora, I get the grub2 manager, which includes a choice for windows. F10 in the gives me boot options, but only for devices. How can I get the laptop to boot to the grub2 manager without esc, f9 ?? sean

When I walk away from my computer in the evening, I pause playback in Rhythmbox. Without fail, I cannot resume playing the following morning. Clicking the pause/pay button, Rhythmbox pops up this error: Failed to link new stream into GStreamer pipeline Closing the application and starting it again resolves the problem. What's happening overnight? live cd install to a LV

Hi all, Is it possible to install a live CD to a logical volume any more? I've tried repeatedly and just when I think I've got it the installer refuses to proceed. At one time this was possible. I needed lot of copies of f14 to use as virtual machines so I installed to hard disk and on completion was prompted to install to more hard disks. From that point on it took 70 seconds per copy. Now it seems that I need a physical partition and to create copies from that. Very time consuming, not to mention the lack of flexibility involved in using physicals vs logicals. If it is no longer possible what is the culprit and is it possible to modify it? Second question: is there anywhere to get zipped copies of o/s images? I'd like to be able to create installs without having to shut down and run a live CD. Thanks for help and pointers, Mike Wright

Upper tool bar

Hello , I did a foolish thing and now I have a foolish question. Accidentely I did delete the upper tool bar and all the icons on it. My question is how , when I make a new upper tool bar , can I get ALL my icons back : I can get back several icons bij the "add-on utility" , but how do I manage when I want to replace the icon for communication with a modem , configure VPN etc. ? Running fc20 64 bit. Downloaded google earth from: http://www.google.com/earth/download/ge/agree.html and at bottom of page, you select the 64 bit rpm, and save it. yum -y localinstall google-earth-stable-7.1.2.2041-0.x86_64 Yum downloaded 34 dependencies, then it burped: Transaction check error: file /usr/bin from install of google-earth-stable-7.1.2.2041-0.x86_64 conflicts with file from package filesystem-3.2-19.fc20.x86_64 Obviously, the packager blew it somehow with respect to dependencies. How do I get around it without "forcing" anything?

fix a broken gnome desktop ?

Hi all, Following a recent kernel update I rebooted and can no longer use Gnome3. I receive this error: "Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. All extensions have been disabled as a precaution." Usually there is no mouse after this happens. A "return" returns me to the login screen and I can choose one of the different desktops from there, all of which work. I am loathe to yum remove, yum install. The remove wants to take 554MB of packages with it and I'm not willing to gamble that I'll have a usable system afterwards. Anybody seen this before? How did you recover from it? OT: Thunderbird spontaneously unsubscribing folders.

This is of course not a Fedora issue as such, but I have tried hard and without success to find answers elsewhere. And since this list has so many contributors who are *so* knowledgeable (abrasive, cranky, cryptic, but above all *knowledgeable*) I thought I would ask here. The question is actually two-fold: (1) From time to time, for no reason that I can discern, Thunderbird spontaneously unsubscribes all (or perhaps most of) my email folders and subfolders. I can of course re-subscribe to them, but since I have a rather large number of folders and subfolders (and subsubfolders ...) this is a lengthy and tedious task. Has anyone any insight into why this unsubscription phenomenon should occur and how one might prevent it from occurring? (2) Failing the last, is there any way to *speed up* the process of re-subscribing? I would like a way of essentially subscribing to *everything*, with a single click (or something like that) and then be able to go through and unsubscribe to those relatively few folders to which I do not wish to subscribe. Groping around on the web I found a way to bypass the "subscribe" system. One goes to Edit -> Account Settings -> Server Settings -> Advanced, and then unchecks "Show only subscribed folders". This is not too bad, but it leaves me with a number of bits of crap in my folder list that I *do not* wish to see. Things that Thunderbird imposes on the user, like "Journal", "Junk E-Mail", "Notes", "Sent Items", "Sent Messages", etc. (The last two really puzzle me; what function might they serve that is different from the function of the "Sent" folder?) It seems to be impossible to get rid of these, and the only way to mask them is to unsubscribe. But then I need to *subscribe* to all of the stuff that I *do* want to see. Hello, On trying to boot, Fedora crashes on my Lenovo Thinkpad T430 with this message: Booting 'Fedora (3.15.4-200.fc20.x86_64) 20 (Heisenbug)' [ 2.718947] [drm:cpt:cpt_serr_int_handler] *ERROR* PCH transcoder A FIFO underrun Actually, all kernels after 3.13.10-200.fc20.x86_64 are crashing on boot on my laptop, but this is the first time I get an error message. How to make usb stick for F20 Xfce live ??

I've got a new HP laptop running Windows 8.1, with uefi boot. I've shrunk the windows partition, so I have 500+ gigs free. I've dl'd the F20 Xfce Live iso. I checked the sha256, which matched. I've got a 2gig usb stick. I followed the instructions on https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_create_and_use_Live_USB. Disk Image Writer completed without error. I booted the HP laptop with the usb stick. Up popped the grub menu. I tried test medium. That failed early. Seems to have failed the checksum. Recreated the usb stick, same result. Went ahead and booted to the livecd. It booted, the balloon filled up, but then it hung at the Fedora "f". On the usb stick in LiveOS was a 600 meg file called squashfs.img. unsquashed it. That generated a 3+ gig file ext3fs, with this sha256 sum: d9adb2bd65f7b69b6c772592a16c4167038c332838efc8ac6700534245028be1 ext3fs.img Any help appreciated. Jay

I recall some advice e.g., just create the dir, /dev, but not its contents.? or, Is it actually ok to do full update of all above dirs, including contents? NVRAM changes not persistent with efibootmgr

After a frozen install while trying to make a dual-boot system I had to hard-reboot my laptop using the power button. On restarting, I was greeted with a UEFI message telling me that there was no bootable device installed! I quickly inserted a boot CD and managed to boot into my installed Fedora 20 by editing the booted CD's grub commands (thank goodness for grub's command line completion!). I therfore know that my Fedora installation (including the EFI partition) is intact and that my crash had somehow corrupted my UEFI NVRAM. A quick check with 'efibootmgr -v' confirmed this, as it just listed the basic 'fallback' paths (no filepaths to the Fedora installed EFI files). The simple answer was therefore to re-add the entry for Fedora and reboot. In order to get the correct syntax for efibootmgr I grep'd '/var/log/anaconda.program.log' and found: 'efibootmgr -c -w -L Fedora -d /dev/sda -p 1 -l \EFI\fedora\shim.efi'. I simply escaped the back-slashes by changing them to double-back-slashes and ran the command as root. I confirmed that everything had worked using 'efibootmgr -v' again and it showed that the entry was there, so I rebooted. Unfortunately, I was greeted by the same 'no bootable device' message as before at which point I had to use the boot CD to get back in again. To my suprise 'efibootmgr -v' didn't show the entry that I'd just created - it had simply vanished. I Googled and Googled and got nowhere. To get out of this predicament, I installed Fedora again in the partition I'd earmarked for the dual boot, at which point anaconda os-probed all partitions/installations, re-created grub's grub.cfg file and fixed the NVRAM. I was then able to successfully boot my laptop. Fortunately, there was a kernel update waiting for me, so installing that reconfigured grub2 and my main Fedora installation was the default in grub again. While I'm now working again, there is still the issue of not being able to alter NVRAM using 'efibootmgr' directly. My question therefore is: Does anaconda do something else after running 'efibootmgr' to make it permanent? Or: Why can anaconda update NVRAM using efibootmgr, while I can't? Thanks in advance.

Camera mounting

Just found weirdo action. i connect my olympus camera into computer. Nothing happens, but I can find "unknown" in filemanager. Now try to open it, I get response, that need to be root, to mount camera into system???? What? Earlier I could mount it as a normal user... What has happened, not using selinux or so.. Have updated system some three times, after last camera mount, so why now have to be root, mount camera? Jarmo

(Sorry for TP) Measuring speed can be a pig. On the net there are a bunch of sites, claiming they can do this. However, some require that you have to install all sorts of crap-ware, you to enable eye-candy. Furthermore, what do you need to know? Latency or bandwidth, up-stream or down-stream? And often you and-up measuring the weakest link in the chain, and that does not have to be your connection to your ISP. One (!) Good way is trying to down load a reasonable large enough file from a site you know that has enough bandwidth, and fast enough storage. Here in europe, i use ftp5.gwdg.de, a site connected to the university network with 10Gbps If the file you choose is to small, the measurement in inaccurate: it should take at least about a minute. Hello, Everyone In the USB settings for my Windows 7 virtual machine, this item was unchecked: "Enable USB 2.0 (EHCI) Controller" The other USB box was checked, though. So, when I checked the box and clicked "OK", GarminExpress finally recognized my GPS, and it is now fully updated! As soon as I applied that setting, I also got a "Found new hardware" wizard from Windows! Now this kind of thing won't happen to me again. Steven P. Ulrick

more info on hundreds of dbus-daemons

Hi all, I'm still working on my problem with hundreds of zombie dbus-daemons. I guess it isn't that common of an issue. After some investigation, I have found that the main culprit seems to be konsole(1). I mostly use my system in command-line mode and am constantly creating and killing konsoles for various jobs. For some reason, creating a konsole forks a dbus-daemon (like this output from ps -ef): walker 12859 1 0 Jul08 ? 00:00:00 /bin/dbus-daemon --fork --print-pid 5 --print-address 7 --session When the konsole terminal is killed, the daemon never goes away. My system performance gradually goes downhill and eventually I get a "no more system file descriptor" error as the number of daemons pile up. Any suggestions for how to debug or fix this? Killing the dbus-daemons locks the window system. Should I take off the fork option in the dbus config file? Is there some way I can start konsoles so that they do a better job of reaping dbus-daemons? kind regards -- Rick Walker

[OT] virtual exam environment

Hi, I'm going to create some virtual exam environment and maybe kvm/qemu/virsh can do the job. This environment should consists several virtual machines (linux + windows) and several virtual networks. This is not a big deal. But after the baseline is created, I would like to simulate problems which must be solved by the examinees. My idea is to use snapshots for this, so I can create faulty snapshots and assign them to in a combination with some good snapshots creating 'scenarios'. Do you think it can be a working approach? Is there any better 'tool'/environment for this? Is there any guide for such thing? Thanks L:

Sometimes (rather often, but not always) having problems with threads in thunderbird: After opening a thread, all opened sublines are unvisible, until I move the mouse pointer over them (without click): then they will appear. This happens both with ati and nvidia video cards. Anybody has this effect too? Hello, Everyone I know that I can just go drive to a computer that has Windows installed on it and get this over with, but I shouldn't have to do that... I have new Garmin nuvi65LM GPS and of course the "GarminExpress" updating program that they force you to use only runs on Windows and Mac. I tried installing the Windows version using Wine, with no luck. I then successfully installed GarminExpress in a virtual machine of Windows 7 that I have installed on Virtual Box. When it tries to detect my device, it says that it can't... If they would just let me/us manually download and install updates, I wouldn't care if I can't use their Windows based application. So, if any of you have succesfully updated any Garmin GPS that forces you to use "GarminExpress", please let me in on your secret. Thank you, Steven P. Ulrick

SImple amp for F20

I am looking for a simple amplifer program. I have looked at audacity, but I would have to be 'recording' to get 'playthrough'. There is supposedly a .vst plugin, but I have not found it yet. This is for my wife to be able to have a simple amp (using my little Asus Eee900) for when she is playing her guitar and needs a bit of a boost.

Make .desktop file show up?

I was figuring out how to install an app, and made the .desktop file for it and put it under /usr/share/applications, but it didn't show up in the gnome 3 search till much later (maybe after logout/login or reboot, I forget when I noticed it was there). Is there some magic incantation to make gnome-shell notice new app .desktop entries right away? Just curious.

OT: Creating a livecd with efi support using Fedora

Currently, I have a project that I build on Fedora systems that uses syslinux to boot from CD or USB. I've only found stuff that mentions Ubuntu, Arch, and some other distro on building EFI option, but even then it is talking about patched versions. Lots of info on installing it to a hard disk, but I haven't found any links that show how to add it to a boot CD? Project currently using syslinux 5.10, but switching to 6.x also works fine, have just been waiting for 6.03 to be releases since there are some issues with 6.x that 6.03 is suppose to fully resolve. Have asked on the syslinux list, but the responses point to other distro builds, and I would prefer to keep it using Fedora. Project can also boot fine from the grub system, but that only helps if someone is already using a linux distro, and my project is disk imaging and many people that use it have windows only systems. frequent kernel oops -- how do I report it?

I'm getting frequent kernel oops in F20, but my kernel is "tainted" so abrpt won't report it. /proc/sys/kernel/tainted has a value of "512". What do I do? It seems to be a windowing problem related to Chrome, but also occurs if I'm doing stuff with bluetooth. yumex won't skip checking for updates

In preferences I have unchecked 'autocheck for updates', but everytime I start yumex, it checks for updates. Then I have to click on 'Available' and wait again as it does its think before I get the list of all apps so I can search for whatever I am looking for. Quite a rather unpleasant experience. So how do I set yumex to skip checking for updates and just go to what is available?

Mirroring issue

Hey all, Got an issue I want to get thoughts/opinions on. I currently mirror Fedora releases, updates, rawhide, etc...But on the releases, that is the problem. Fedora has a few directories to mirror and not sure which scenario to use. 1 - I currently mirror the *whole kit and kaboodle* directory (it has everything in other words), that way if/when I install a package that is or uses a package from the Fedora main repository, I can get it. And then if for some reason I need to reinstall Fedora (20 in this case), I use the http option as my connection is pretty fast and doesn't take forever to install. Why I do it that way is because the *everything* directory doesn't have an installable tree to use. 2 - I have mirrored the installable tree directory (basically the release, as you would get it on dvd), so can do reinstalls or whatever from Fedora with no issues. But if you install a package from somewhere and it calls for a Fedora package not in the mirror, then you are stuck. So I guess using this scenario, would have to change the repo from yum to use the *everything* tree from http (since the connection is fast anyway), but takes away reason for mirroring in first place. 3 - I guess I have the room (spare disk used for mirroring and such away from system) to just mirror both and not have to use internet at all, at least from Fedora perspective? Problems after replacing an ati videocard by a nvidia card (F20, both 512 MB memory)

Problem description: replacing my ati video card (DVI) by a nvidia card (DVI too) generates problems: almost unreadable (flickering) screen during boot after some boot progress (even without rhgb), no gdm login screen. The primary F20 system was installed with the ati card. Running "dracut --force" was no solution. After investigating a little bit I saw that the grub boot-parameter "video=1280x1024-24" was the culprit: replacing "video=1280x1024-24" by "video=DVI-D:1280x1024-24". Both the ati card and the nvidia card have a DVI connector. So I can't explain this weird effect. Anybody has an explanation? Camera mounting

[Solved] I had my booting system into multi-user. Started XFCE from command line.. Now somehow XFCE couldn't do mounting without root privileges. I changed boot direct into graphical.target, so now I get medias mounted without root privileges.. Sorry for noise, should check better my system and what I had done.. X preview repo?

Just wondering if there is anything like the virt preview repo for the latest bits of X11, mesa, etc? (I suspect the answer is "no", but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask :-). I ask because the 4K monitor I just got working stopped working again following an update that dragged in some bits of mesa and perhaps other things. I switched to ubuntu on the system with this monitor, and ubuntu does have a "ppa" repo "xorg-edgers" for everything bleeding edge in X. I was able to get the monitor working on ubuntu (possibly it will even survive some updates since the repo includes all the dependent bits, not just the nvidia driver). Perhaps I'll try rawhide, but things seem to break a lot in rawhide :-).

DNF Doesn't Appear to Have --skip-broken

Hi, I have an issue whereby I can't do a sudo dnf upgrade to upgrade the versions of Mysql from Oracle's Mysql repository because one of the other repositories has a package upgrade that won't be applied because it has a dependency on a gdm version that as yet doesn't exist, and, dnf appears to not have support for yum's --skip-broken parameter. Does dnf have support for this functionality so that sudo dnf upgrade will upgrade the packages I want to and ignore the packages with dependency issues? regards, Steve

4K monitors?

I see prices are getting better on 4K monitors (samsung has one on sale for $599 at the moment), but I still find it impossible to figure out if any given video card will actually work with one :-(. Is anyone using a 4K monitor on fedora with open source video drivers and actually getting a 60HZ 3840x2160 image of a single desktop? If so, care to share which video card and monitor you use?

Network availability systemd dependency failure at boot

It looks like after the last systemd update, systemd appears to start jobs that have a dependency on network availability before the network is actually up. After booting, a crapload of services reliably fail to start: httpd, dhcpd, named, and others. All of them come up fine if I manually start them, after boot completes. Sifting through systemd docs, it appears that services that require network availability should state an After dependency on "network-online.target". Wonderful. Can someone explain why, if that's true, only kdump.service appears to explicitly state that dependency? [root@shorty system]# fgrep -- network-online.target *.target [root@shorty system]# fgrep -- network-online.target *.service kdump.service:After=network.target network-online.target remote-fs.target So, I see two possible explanations: 1) network-online.target was introduced in the most recent systemd update. Prior to that, its equivalent functionality was done in some other way, possibly integrated with network.target. The last update unceremoniously introduced network-online.target, with no advance notice, and without any coordination with packages that need to use it, and thus breaking everything. 2) everything was always like that. Everything was always broken, but until the recent systemd update, its internal logic happened to kick things off in the right order. The last update changed some internal scheduling logic, and now everything is broken. So, how should this mess get fixed? Start filing bugs against all these packages, requesting a change to their systemd service file, to state a dependency on network-online.target?

Direct support for rc.local has already been "deprecated". Somewhere I read something from Lennart and it was clear that he has an almost religious hatred for doing things 'the old way', so much so that rc.local is not 'desired'. But not easy to set up. I've been playing with using @reboot in a cron script. Using @reboot is effectively a run-once trigger for cron. X thinks it is up, but screen is black?

In my quest for more pixels, I'm trying to get my new UHD monitor working in 3840x2160 resolution. The nouveau driver doesn't know how to drive the GTX 750Ti card, so I had to install the nvidia binary drivers from rpmfusion. At this point, everything seems to work except for the one minor detail that the screen is always black :-). X thinks it is up and running, the Xorg log file shows it recognizing the video card and selecting 3840x2160 resolution. Nothing that seems like an error appears anywhere I've looked. I just have that black screen problem (Ctrl-Alt-F2 does get me to a console, so it works fine in console mode - it also worked in 1920x1080 mode on a different video source that couldn't support UHD resolution). Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? (I'm off to try stuff like a different cable in the hope that it is something dumb).

OT: Web server no longer works

I run a small weather station that acts as a web server. Recently it's become impossible to access it via the web, though I can still access it over my local network. Some details: * My ISP is AT&T using their Uverse service. * The server was accessible from the web a month or so ago. * The server has web address oaklandweather.no-ip.org, which currently resolves to 99.121.57.131, and probably will for some time. * I can ping the server either over the LAN or via the web without trouble. * An attempt to connect to the weather station as a web server (HTTP) times out. I'm pretty sure that the Uverse gateway is set up correctly: It worked properly in the past and I haven't made any changes to it. An inspection of the settings doesn't show anything obviously wrong. Has AT&T changed its terms of service? I vaguely remember the terms of service don't allow customers to run servers; but I can't find any such restriction in documents available on the web. Also the (AT&T supplied) gateway has a function to explicitly open a "pinhole" allowing HTTP service from a computer on the customer side of the gateway. Thanks - jon

postfix starting before network

Hi all, I have no idea why this might be happening. I've looked at the systemd control file for postfix and compared it to dovecot's. Both want the network.target before starting. The difference is that dovecot starts correctly. Postfix does not. The problem has only appeared since Saturday, when I probably did a yum update. Postfix issues an error from one of the pre-commands having to do with the aliases database saying its network interface (and it duly lists the IPv4 address) doesn't exist. Hi, I apologize for a trivial question but that's because I yet have not much experience with Linux. I made, some time ago, a copy of the smb.conf file, for security reasons, before making to it any changes: (cp smb.conf.original smb.conf.original.orig ) Yesterday I wanted to give a look at the contents of the old file(smb.conf.original) that I had copied; but I found that both files have the same content. I made other changes, in order to do experiments, and I have always seen that the changes made to a file are always shown on the other file. The command "ls -l" shows the two files are colored blue which (I think) indicates that the files are a link to each other. Since I am convinced that I used the "cp" command; my question is: which mistake can I have made to create a link of the file instead of a copy of it? Thank you Regards Angelo

Headless Google Cloud Print only works when started from ssh -Y

I've followed the instructions on https://support.google.com/a/answer/2906017?hl=en to set up a Google Cloud printer using a headless F19 server. I used ssh -Y -C <servername> to log into the service, install Chrome and set up the printer. I then ran nohup /usr/bin/google-chrome \ --type=service \ --enable-cloud-print-proxy \ --no-service-autorun \ --noerrdialogs \ --user-data-dir=/home/gary/.GoogleCloudPrint & NOTE: different path to google-chrome used as the one specified on the web page just generated library errors. Which started Chrome in the background. However, when I logged out Chrome died. To get it working quickly (it was home time after all) I logged in text mode on the console and ran the same command. However that just core dumped immediately. If I log into the server using SSH but don't specify the -Y and therefore don't have X forwarding, it does the same: [gary@lou ~]$ nohup /usr/bin/google-chrome --type=service --enable-cloud-print-proxy --no-service-autorun --noerrdialogs --user-data-dir=/home/gary/.GoogleCloudPrint & [1] 6204 [gary@lou ~]$ nohup: ignoring input and appending output to ‘nohup.out’ [1]+ Aborted (core dumped) nohup /usr/bin/google-chrome --type=service --enable-cloud-print-proxy --no-service-autorun --noerrdialogs --user-data-dir=/home/gary/.GoogleCloudPrint [gary@lou ~]$ Does anyone know how to get round this problem? can't log on without using a mouse

Unless I use the mouse, I can't log on to a MATE desktop. No keypresses that I can find will get me focus onto any gadget on the logon screen, to select which user to log on as. I have to grab the mouse and click on something. Cannot login to KDE - solved

I usually leave myself logged in 24/7 to my Fedora 20 system but recently, I went on holidays in Europe leaving house-sitters so logged out. When I returned on Monday, I found that I could login to a tty and to ssh but not to KDE. As soon as I entered my password, the Fedora page appeared for a second then the screen went black then returned to the login page. Eventually, I thought to check my .xsession-errors and that indicated that libproj.so.0 was not found. Installing that library fixed the problem. (No idea why KDE would need a projections library.) I have a 2.5" drive, 7200RPM and eSATA 3 (6gbps) drive. If I put it in an enclosure that is eSATA 2 (3gbps), how much impact does it have on the drive's performance using the various i/o throughput benchmarking apps, compared with if the enclosure supported 6gbps? (assume that that controller in the computer is indeed a 6gps esata3 controller).

Brother HL-5250DN duplex printing: loves me, loves me not, ...

Greetings. I've got a brother HL-5250DN printer on my local network, and it is *currently* not doing duplex printing under Fedora 20. I've seen discussions of a similar problem in various places. The responses to the problem seem to fall into several categories: (1) Duplex printing must be *enabled* on the printer before it will print duplex. (2) Some printers are not well-supported under linux. You should check the Open Printing database (or similar). (3) Get the printer driver from Brother. Regarding (1), the duplex option *is* enabled on the printer, and it *does* print in duplex from Windows and Mac systems (and others -- see below). Regarding (2), the printer printed in duplex just fine through various versions of Fedora, up through Fedora 18 (the last version I had installed prior to Fedora 20). Furthermore, it prints duplex just fine from an Ubuntu 14.04 system that I have running in VirtualBox on my Fedora machine. In all cases the duplex printing capability happened without my having to expend any brain power at all on the issue: it "just worked". Regarding (3), I've tried that, but it didn't appear to help. So far as I can tell, my problems are pretty similar to those reported by other people. One possibly novel thing: I noticed, without paying close attention, that some of the recent updates to Fedora 20 have been CUPS-related. That motivated me to roll the dice and try duplex printing again. And shazam! It worked! If that were the end of the story, I wouldn't bother to tell it. The printer once again does *not* print duplex. I'm assuming that the problem must have been fixed by one CUPS-related upgrade and broken again by a later one. firefox defaults to offline

Hi all, Running f20 and firefox 30.0. Firefox now starts in "Offline" mode. This is very annoying to me. I've never found a need to use a browser offline. I've looked at every preference, about:config setting, and I haven't been able to find a way to start firefox in "Online" mode. Any helpers? TIA, Mike Wright

Hi everyone, After installing Fedora 20, I switched to tty2 and did a yum update there. The charging splash screen took over the screen at some point and I cannot switch to any other tty. So I waited until I believe the transcaction is done and did a forced shutdown. I rebooted and everything seems fine except that the output of yum history info X (X is the update transcaction) is a bit strange: ...... Sudden onset ftp problem - can't ftp through vpn

Sigh. Another time the old "sudo yum update" breaks something... All of a sudden, ftp does not work if I'm connected to the net using a vpn. And it's very specific: I can connect, log in, list a directory, etc. However, I can't "get" or "mget" a file. Fedora 19 - filesystems slow

Hi, I have a Fedora 19 system with several large 2-4TB drives attached via USB-SATA docking stations. I'm seeing a problem whereby a specific filesystem that hasn't been accessed for some time and is REALLY slow to respond to initial requests. ls -alt for example takes a substantial bit of time to respond at first but then response is acceptable after that. I'm trying to figure out what's happening and why and what I can do about it. It's like the buffers are empty and they need to be filled. Are there kernel tunable parameters that can be changed to avoid this problem? Thanks, George...

Hello, How do you explain the following behavior? When I run yum update. it starts to download the package at a high speed: 111 MB/s then the speed regularly decrease to reach 400B/s then it decides to switch to another site. Then again, it does the same, starts high and finish very, then FAILS again and find another mirror site, etc........ It takes very long to finish the update!!!! Do you have explanation? Strange problem with Haswell HD 4600 IGA and screen resolution

All, I recently built a new desktop machine using a Shuttle SZ87R6, an I7-4770S and a Dell U2713HM monitor. Did my initial HW burn-in and testing using a Fedora 20 KDE Spin Live CD (Kernel 3.11.10-301.fc20.x86_64 & KDE Systems settings v4.11.3) everything worked fine and the display resolution was 2560x1440 (native for the display). The last of the parts came in (HD for secondary storage) and I finished the build and did an install and a full system update (Kernel 3.14.8-200.fc20.x86_64 and KDE System Settings v4.11.10, along with ~=750MB of other updates) The display looked odd after rebooting and when I checked it was set to 1600x1200 (not only wrong resolution but wrong aspect ratio). Checked the U2713HM OSD and found that while the max resolution was 2560x1440, current resolution was 1600x1200 and the interface was correctly reported (DVI-D). Verified the interconnection was DVI-D to DVI-D via a dual link DVI cable. Went back inside and rechecked the Display and Monitor settings in Systems Settings and maximum available resolution was 1600x1200 (which is what the display was set to). also noted that the Display and Monitor applet was reporting an HDMI interconnect vice the actual DVI-D. Ran xrandr from the command line and found that while 1920x1200 was shown as an available resolution (at least the correct aspect ratio), I could not set it to that using the command line. Scratched my head and spent several hours Googling to see if anyone else had run into this problem - no luck although there were some postings from roughly a year ago about people in the Win8 world having video problems with the HD 4600 IGA. I then spent some time on the Intel site, found several conflicting threads on HD 4600 capability and did an explicit update to the latest version of the Intel video stack for Linux. No change and still unable to reset video resolution or aspect ratio from within F20. BTW, going back to the earlier kernel is not really an option as I wanted the privilege escalation bug fix that came out in 3.14.6, however with the earlier kernel the resolution and aspect ratio is correct. At this stage, I have pretty well established (at least in my own mind) that it is a SW vice a HW problem and it is entirely reproducible as when I reboot with the Live CD the 2560x1440 resolution comes up by default. While at this point I rather strongly suspect the Intel i915 driver and video stack, it could also be either a KDE or an xorg or a kernel issue and I really don' know where to file a bug report since I can't nail down which SW is screwing up or what to try next short of installing a low TDP video card, which I would rather avoid. Everyone: Updating to the new kernel temporarily knocked out my wireless connectivity on my Dell Inspiron 1545. That is, until I executed: # modprobe b43 Or, since I am a member of "wheel": $ sudo modprobe b43 A few seconds after I issued that command, wireless was enabled, and the connection I had long been using, re-activated itself. Question: must I execute "modprobe xxx" with every kernel upgrade? (By the way: it turns out that module "wl" is not necessary.) Temlakos

yum update took 99.99% of cpu

FC20. I ran yum -y update. After all the files were downloaded, the delta processing started. From there on, all the way through to the end of installation and cleanup, cpu was 99.99% taken up by the update process, and the entire desktop became unresponsive. I was unable to switch display windows, of which I had 6. The update had downloaded a total of 161MB, for a total of about 30 updates, most of them wine related. The machine is a dual core Intel running at 2.4GHz, with 4GB ram.

Problem with iptables

Hi all, When I run /sbin/system-config-services I see that iptables is enabled, and that /etc/sysconfig/iptables contains the rules I want. However, after bootup, I open a terminal and run iptables -L -n and do not see those rules at all, and all the rules are in "ACCEPT" state. I have to resort to start iptables manually in order to install the rules I have in /etc/sysconfig/iptables. So, what needs to be done to force iptables to run and to use the rules I have in the iptables file?

dconf-editor bug?

Hi all, Using f20, gnome3. Appears to be a bug in dconf-editor-0.18.0-2.fc20. Drilling down: org->gnome->desktop->wm->preferences: *auto-raise* has no effect. Targeted window receives focus but doesn't raise to the top when mouse or sloppy is selected. If somebody else verifies it I'll bz it.

Dell Inspiron 1545 touchpad suddenly s-l-o-w

The latest updates--pushed yesterday--cause the touchpad on my Dell Inspiron 1545 to run v-e-r-y s-l-o-w. It was so bad, I tried to reinstall Fedora. At first the reinstall restored the swift movement of the touchpad pointer. But as soon as it took the updates, everything slowed down once again. When I run in Setup, the touchpad cursor moves swiftly. But not when Fedora is loaded. What a time for this to happen. I simply cannot use it for any kind of presentation in the shape it's in. What package might I possibly be able to roll back until somebody fixes the problem? Temlakos

f20 bridges not starting on boot

Hi all, f20 fully updated. Not using NetworkManager. There are an assortment of interfaces and bridges defined in my network-scripts/ifcfg files. The interfaces come up but the bridges don't. I have to manually restart networking to bring the bridges up and bind the interfaces to them. This had been working up through f18 (didn't try f19). Any ideas on how to get them to be created on boot or why they don't? Is this a candidate for a bug report? Thanks for any help, Mike Wright
