RAGE XL Framebuffer
by Yanick Quirion
Hi all
I know that is not a specific question about Fedora, but I can't find answer on the kernel mailing list.
Is somebody having server with integrated ATI RAGE XL video card? Is it possible to patch the kernel to support this video card? If I add VGA=791 in my grub.conf, I will have a resolution of 1024x768 which is good, but the display is very slow (especially when the screen is scrolling). If I use I this: "video=aty128fb:1024x768@70" it will not work. I'm using kernel 2.4.22 but I will try 2.6.0-test11 today.
If somebody has a patch, a link or anything else that can help me, it will be appreciated.
Thanks for your help.
Regards,

Soundblaster
by Antonio Montagnani
I have two similar PC (old Pentium but workin fine)
In Pc no.1 I upgraded from RH8 to Fedora and it went fine: Soundblaster
is working fine
In Pc no.2 I made a fresh installation but in redhat-sound-config Fedora
doesn't see any card, that was working on Redhat 9 after soundconfig...
Where is the trick?? I assume that my Sounblaster is an old 16...but
fine on a router/firewall.
Tnx

Tablet hardware
by Florian Weimer
Is there any tablet-like hardware which is well-supported by Fedora 20
and later? Something with a high-resolution display?
I don't need 3D acceleration beyond what's needed to run a typical
desktop environment, but I'd like to have lots of RAM, a bit of CPU
power (perhaps even a current Core i7) and an SSD with decent read
speed.

current laptop recommendations
by Ian Malone
Anyone have any good suggestions for a new laptop with good Linux
compatibility? My current one is about 8 years old (IIRC), not looking
for anything superspecced to replaced it, just annoyances like reduced
battery life and the wifi switch playing up are starting to build up
(plus people have poked the screen one too many times). It's a 13.3"
screen with 100GB hard drive and I guess I'd be hoping to find
something similar with a maximum budget of about £500.

Fedora 20: After running yum update the Mate Terminal doesn't start anymore
by Jim Lewis
I ran "yum update" on my Fedora 20 system a few days ago. I normally
don't do this as something always breaks and in this case it was the
Mate-Terminal. I already had a few terminals open so I can still use the
system. Clicking on either the Terminal icon in the panel, or using
Applications->Mate Terminal does the same thing: There's a message on the
bottom panel that says "Starting MATE" that stays there for about 6
seconds and then it disappears. No new terminal is created. I can still
use my existing terminals and I can create a new one if I run
"mate-terminal &" in it. I have looked at the Properties dialog of the
Terminal and nothing seems out of place (i.e. looks just like my other
systems).
I have not rebooted yet in case there is something I should do first.
Any ideas? Of course a reboot might just fix this but I wanted to ask
before I did that. Or maybe a reboot is needed after an update and I am
too ignorant to know this.
BTW, I tried to find this problem on the net but did not have any luck.
Also, this is not a critical issue, the system seems fine otherwise.

problem playing video DVD
by JD
Rented a DVD movie (the 3rd in the series Atlas Shrugged).
It would not play with any media player (such as smplayer, vlc, Dragon
Player, xine, totem, ... etc)
No errors in /var/log/messages.
I told the vendor, and they stuck it into a machine the "tests" it for
playability.
It took 5 seconds and it declared it playable :) :) Whatever ....
The surface seemed OK on visual inspection.
So, what could have gone wrong?
Anyone have this problem?

In this link
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1034762.html
I read that this problem happen frequently; and it is not sure if is a HD
problem or a SW problem...
Someone suggest to disable the ports of all bus not SATA in the bios...
In this other link:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1034762
someone said that, on Ubuntu, he was able to solve the problem changing
options in the file /etc/modprobe.d/options
= = = = =
It's Kernel bug on ata acpi
Put "options libata noacpi=1" on /etc/modprobe.d/options
= = = = =
In my case surly the problem is connected with the HD; this because,
trying to change HD, the problem disappeared only re-plugging the caves of
the HD.

I would like have some suggestion about this problem
