How to Troubleshoot? No trackpad right button Inspiron 5558 F29
by Ted Roche
Dell Inspiron 5558, upgraded from F28 to F29 and all seemed well, until I
noticed right mouse button on trackpad was not registering. With a cordless
Logitech mouse plugged in, right-mouse clicks bring up the appropriate
context menus.
Running the "mouse and touchpad" app under devices in GNOME Settings show
both right and left mouse clicks detected as a primary button.
Tested GNOME on Xorg and Wayland.
I'd welcome suggestions on what I might try or look at for troubleshooting.

New f29 install, windows 10 not detected / grub2-editenv nit
by Richard Shaw
My son recently built his own computer and still needs Windows 10 for some
games so when get got a new 2TB HD he installed Windows.
This weekend I walked him through installing Fedora. We resized the NTFS
partition and grabbed about 500GB for Fedora. The installation went
smoothly.
Upon reboot there was no GRUB menu. I know it's supposed to be hidden by
default but not if there are multiple OS's installed.
First nit... I wanted to turn off the hidden menu. I knew from a previous
list email and BZ that you shouldn't edit grubenv directly so I tried to do
it what I thought was the RIGHT way...
When I tried the logical way
# grub2-editenv set menu_auto_hide=0
I got an error. I thought it was odd but after looking at --help the
command goes at the end so I did:
# grub2-editenv menu_auto_hide=0 set
(no error)
# grub2-editenv create
Now the grubenv only contains hashes. All the options are gone. Looking
here:
https://hansdegoede.livejournal.com/19081.html
Apparently if you don't want to specify the filename you need to use "-",
so:
# grub2-editenv - set menu_auto_hide=0
Next the bigger problem:
I tried running grub2-mkconfig into a temporary file and OS prober is not
finding the Windows installation.
Going to check if both are booting UEFI or not... Could be the problem.
Thanks,
Richard

Tip: VLC and zero length files
by ToddAndMargo
Hi All,
VLC 5.0.3
Fedora 29, x64
Xfce 4.13
Heads up: if you read a zero length *.mp4 file with VLC, the error
windows will pop up, start to shimmer, eventually kill VLC,
and you will get Logged out -- losing everything you had open.
You can log back in, but nothing seems to work quite right until
you reboot.
I am not reporting it to VLC as they act like such jerks
when you do.

sudo
by Patrick Dupre
Hello,
I am running user in old fashion
I wanted that a user be able to do:
mount /dev/mapper/VolGrpUsr_DK0-home /mnt/USB
With visudo, I did
pdupre localhost=/usr/bin/mount /dev/mapper/VolGrpUsr_DK0-home /mnt/USB/
(pdupre is also member of pdupre
I tried also
%pdupre localhost=/usr/bin/mount /dev/mapper/VolGrpUsr_DK0-home /mnt/USB/)
But it does not work
/usr/bin/mount /dev/mapper/VolGrpUsr_DK0-home /mnt/USB
mount: only root can do that
or
sudo /usr/bin/mount /dev/mapper/VolGrpUsr_DK0-home /mnt/USB
[sudo] password for pdupre:
pdupre is not allowed to run sudo on Teucidide. This incident will be reported.
I also tried to put pdupre as member of wheel, but it does not help.
Where is my mistake?
Thank

Server goes catatonic after a few days
by Alex
Hi,
I have a fedora29 system in our colo that's a few years old now and
just goes catatonic and stops responding after a few days. It's
happened a few times now, even with different kernels, so I suspect
it's a memory or hardware problem.
Is it possible to run memtest without having physical access to the
machine to insert a USB stick or CDROM?
After the machine reboots (via IPMI access), there's nothing in the
logs and no abrt-cli info on a kernel crash or other info I can find
about why it died.
What else can I do to troubleshoot this without having to drive to the
colo to check on it?
The last entry from journalctl just before it stopped responding was
just a regular nrpe entry, unrelated to the crash.
I've pasted the current dmesg output here:

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Fonts gone crazy?
by Tom Horsley
I've got an old system, unmodified for years. I run emacs 21.2.1
on it using ssh X forwarding to put the emacs window on my
desktop. I've just done an update of my fedora 29 system
after being away for a couple of weeks, and now the fonts
are all messed up.
I'm never absolutely sure about these things, but I believe the
old X programs get their fonts from the server, and suddenly the
fonts when I try to run this old emacs with my fedora 29 desktop
as the server have gone completely wacko.
For instance, emacs claims the frame is 101 characters wide, but
if I type characters across the window, I can see it is actually
81 characters wide (this is using terminus fonts which were also
updated in the pile of updates I got this morning).
Anyone have any clue what might be going on here? Who is lying to whom
about the fonts?
