Live cd's have problems booting with amd 3700x cpu and MSI x 570 a pro
mother board
by rmorehouse@cox.net
i had problems installing fedora on a new pc and wanted to share what happened.
i filed a bugzilla report https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1740334
using gtx 1660 ti video card fails on fedora 29
using gtx 1050 ti works on fedora 29
using fedora 30 fails with both gtx 1050 ti and gtx 1660 ti video cards
mother board is msi x 570 a pro. cpu is amd 3700x with bios update from 7-3-2019
fedora 30 kde spin live cd would not boot and showed systemd fail messages and then hung in both cases.
after switching to a gtx 1050 ti video card i was able to boot the fedora 29 kde spin and install it
did a dnf system-upgrade download
and then a dnf system upgrade reboot to upgrade to fedora 30
system runs fine now with gtx 1050 ti video card after the upgrade to fedora 30

Can the size of eurlatgr font be changed
by IK
I have not looked at configuring consolefonts in a long time.
I see that Fedora now uses the "eurlatgr.psfu" font by default.
Can the size of the eurlatgr font be changed or must I switch
to another font. /etc/vconsole.conf only contains the lines:
KEYMAP="us"
FONT="eurlatgr"
from which I get the impression that one size fits all
and I can't find any documentation.

udev rule for permissions & symlink for /dev/usb/lp0
by Eric Smith
I'm setting up a turnkey system that uses a Zebra brand USB barcode
printer. I need to use it without CUPS, directly printing from an
application. I've verified that this works when my application writes to
/dev/usb/lp0. I've had to either run the application as root or change the
permissions on /dev/usb/lp0. I though I could solve this problem by using a
udev rule to recognize the printer, create a symlink, and set the
permissions. I created the following rule in
/etc/udev/rules.d/99-zebra.rules.
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ACTION=="add", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0a5f",
ATTRS{idProduct}=="011c", MODE="0666", SYMLINK+="zebra
This sort of works, but not in any useful way. It does recognize the
printer, but instead of creating the symlink to /dev/usb/lp0 and changing
the permission of that device file, it creates a symlink to e.g.
/dev/bus/usb/001/002, and sets the permissions of that. However, I can't
print to /dev/bus/usb/001/002 (or the symlink to that). Printing to
/dev/usb/lp0 still works fine.
How do I write a udev rule that will set the permission of and symlink to
/dev/usb/lp0 instead of the raw USB device?
Thanks!

Any good text editor supporting PGP encryption and packaged for
Fedora?
by Frederic Muller
Hi!
I've been using Gjots2 for the above and am very happy with it... except
that the last release no longer support asking for the PGP passphrase
when opening an encrypted file. I did get a patch here (thank you very
much), I also did file a bug but get tired of compiling or using an
older package version at every Fedora release.
So that's it, I'm willing to move on! I found CryptoTE as an alternative
but again last package I found from their website is for Fedora 14 and
of course there is no package under the current F30 repositories.
I have to say that I like the structured Gjots2 layout with the ability
to create different pages for different topics. So something similar
would be nice.
Does anyone have any suggestion for such a "simple" text editor?
Thank you very much.

missing /sys/class/drm/* on official Fedora kernels

Ive not really concerned myself too much with it,
cuz Ive been building my own kernels from kernel.org, and they pick up EDID

iiuc, this reduces module builds to those usable on the hardware?

Default scrolling in Firefox (F30)
by Lukas Zapletal
Hello,
I recently upgraded my laptop (X1 6th gen) and I am trying out Gnome on Wayland with all the default settings. Everything is superb, except two-finger scrolling in Firefox. It looks like it has different scrolling behavior than other applications.
Now, it's difficult to describe what I feel, but ramp-up time of scrolling is quite slow and feels like there is a lag. Then actual scrolling (using two fingers) is a bit fast (too much content scrolled) and finally when I remove my fingers then the decay time is a bit fast. I would like to feel more of like iPad.
I know I should be asking on Mozilla lists, but I think this might be also Wayland, libinput or touchpad driver related so trying here. Which settings should I tune to make this experience more closer to Safari on MacOS? Am I searching for about:config settings or some other settings in Fedora?
I tried the kernel setting psmouse.synaptics_intertouch=1 but no difference. Tried to play around in Gnome settings without luck. And finally spent some time fiddling with about:config values but there are so many combinations and documentation is almost zero. No surprise I came to zero conclusions.
Thanks for sharing your experience with that. I use trackpoint for work but I like touchpad for casual browsing in the evening (Twitter etc :-)

tar
by Patrick Dupre
Hello,
I do not understand,
The command:
tar -cf /mnt/backup/home.tlz --lzma pdupre --exclude-caches-all --exclude='pdupre/Nextcloud' --exclude='pdupre/.mozilla'
returns:
tar: --exclude-caches-all has no effect
tar: --exclude ‘pdupre/Nextcloud’ has no effect
tar: --exclude ‘pdupre/.mozilla’ has no effect
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors
tar: pdupre/Nextcloud: file changed as we read it
What is wrong?
Thank.

Few seconds Freeze in KDE Plasma since F30
by Frédéric
Hi,
Since I moved to F30, I get some plasma freeze from time to time. It
freezes just for a few seconds (3-5 s) and only the mouse can still be
moved (clicking does not work).
Last time, I had a top open and there was nothing more than 5% (Xorg).
Any idea?
Thanks,
F
