complaints after upgrade
by François Patte
Bonjour,
I have just upgrade from f32 to f34 and encounter some issues:
1- firefox 90 has (once more) change its configuration.... I can only
see one tab: the one which is displayed; if I want to see another open
tab, I have to close the one I am reading... Very easy! Moreover, the
tab bar has moved from top to bottom and it seems to be impossible to
change this.
2- So, I tried to downgrade firefox using dnf downgrade but:
can't create transaction lock on /var/lib/rpm/.rpm.lock
????
After some researches, I found that I have to do:
/sbin/restorecon -v /var/lib/rpm/.rpm.lock
and then:
rpmdb --rebuilddb
But this failed for the same reason : "can't create etc...." I had to
do:
ausearch -c "rpmdb" --raw | audit2allow -M my-rpmdb
semodule -X 300 -i my-rpmdb.pp
At last I could downgrade firefox... And I added excludepkgs=firefox in
dnf.conf file.
3- There is a service: rpmdb-rebuild.service but it is impossible to
start this service for the same reason "can't create transaction lock on
/var/lib/rpm/.rpm.lock"
"rpmdb-rebuild.service: Main process exited, code=exited,
status=255/EXCEPTION"
how to solve this problem?
4- nmb service does not start:

What can I do?
Thank you.

QT interface config - ?
by lejeczek
Hi guys.
I've tried "Qt4 Config" which Qt4 apps such as VLC claim to
use - I want to set fonts but changes made there does not
seem to work or affect anything.
Would you know how to configure Qt interface bits & bobs for
Qt apps?
many thanks, L

Unable to delete BTRFS snapshot
by Sreyan Chakravarty
Hi,
I am faced with a strange problem. I have a BTRFS snapshot that I want to
delete but just can't.
So I always manipulate BTRFS snapshots from a live-cd environment which I
setup using the following commands:
sudo cryptsetup open /dev/sda3 dm-crypt
<<GIVE PASSWORD>>
sudo mount /dev/mapper/dm-crypt /mnt
Now I can query the snapshots:
$ sudo btrfs subvolume list /mnt
ID 448 gen 235989 top level 5 path root
ID 449 gen 0 top level 5 path before_live_cd_exp
I want to delete the snapshot "before_live_cd_exp", which I am unable to do:
$ sudo btrfs subvolume delete /mnt/before_live_cd_exp/
ERROR: Not a Btrfs subvolume: Invalid argument
What does it mean it's not a Btrfs subvolume ? It was picked up by the list
command.
I also tried via the subvolid:
$ sudo btrfs subvolume delete --subvolid 449 /mnt
Delete subvolume (no-commit): '/mnt/before_live_cd_exp'
ERROR: Could not destroy subvolume/snapshot: No such file or directory
This is even weirder since as you can clearly see the directory exists in
the given path.
Any suggestions on what is going wrong ?
I should tell you that a while back I had a huge BTRFS file system crash,
and it took a lot of targeted help from the community to get my system to
boot.
This may be related to that you can find the long discussion here:

'OBS Studio" - available codes ?
by lejeczek
Hi guys.
I have only "H.264" codec available in "FFMPEG VAAPI" and I
wonder if that is something that cannot do nothing about -
must stay this way or perhaps there is a way to have wider
choice of codecs there.
Would anybody know?

desktop recording / screen casting - ??
by lejeczek
Hi guys.
I'm a complete newbie to the area as per the subject and as
I searched for a half of a day today, I can say - it seems I
failed to find a working solution.
Do you have something you can recommend which would work in
f34 on a laptop with an external screen attached?
Nothing sophisticated but something that at least will offer
a choice - which monitor/display to record/cast.
A few apps I've found today end up creating a file yes, but
playing back shows nothing but black(empty?) content.
I have tried so far:
1) vokoscreen - only cursor on black recorded
2) simpleScreenRecorder - same as above
3) byzanz - same
many thanks,
L.

pulseaudio slowdowns
by Tim
Hi,
Over several years, different releases, Fedora and CentOS, two
independent computers, every now and then some glitch happens and
suddenly:
audio/video files start playing slowly
the audio pitch drops accordingly
I've never been able to find the trigger, but it can happen when you go
through the pulseaudio settings (e.g. you open the thing so you can
adjust the sound level of one thing - such as the file playing in a web
browser, separately from the system ding alert sounds). Or, some
application causing the system to ding out loud, starts this fault
occurring.
Doing a killall pulseaudio doesn't reliably resolve it (rarely it
does). Likewise, with the app playing the sound (VLC, audacity,
firefox).

nsswitch.conf again
by Eyal Lebedinsky
This was brought up before, but today again it bit me. There was a glibc update (fc34)
which provides a new nsswitch.conf with this line
hosts: files myhostname resolve [!UNAVAIL=return] dns
which caused all the aliases I had for my server to fail because my local dns was not looked up.
Had to again remove the '[!UNAVAIL=return]' stanza.
Is this issue being fixed? I found this
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1717384
which suggests nsswitch.conf will become a fedora file (not glibc) and hopefully better, but this log
has now been open for a long time.

Huh? Am I misinterpreting? The MAC is supposed to be world-wide unique
to each interface. There are a couple of situations where this can
accidentally happen, like VMware using the same poorly-chosen random MAC
for two VMs that breaks everything on that vSwitch, but that's the only
one that I've ever encountered. Having the same MAC on two interfaces is
not legal, so you should expect to break something on any router or
machine that I can think of. If it works, then that router is broken.
Long ago, this as 💯 true.
Then, some mobo manufacturers add the “option” to migrate your MAC…
And not so long ago, mobile phone producers had a brain-fart, and named that “privacy-mode”, randomizing MAC-addresses.

scanner no longer detected?
by Tom Horsley
I was surprised recently when I tried xsane and discovered that
it actually worked these days on my Epson Artisan 725 connected
via the network.
But I tried to use it again today, and found that xsane claims
it can't find any scanners.
I cranked up the Windows virtual machine and it talked to
it just fine.
Was fedora just teasing me the other day?
Any way to build in the known scanner IP addr instead of
relying on it scanning for devices?
I tried adding the IP addr to /etc/sane.d/net.conf, but nothing
changed.
