Can someone tell me or give me a pointer to the status of Xen on FC6 kernel 2.6.20.x? I've read about and experienced some serious instability on 2.6.20.x and was wondering when a stable release was expected. All of the threads I've read say to use Xen on 2.6.18, but since Xen is not a critical requirement for me, I'd like to wait until it comes out on 2.6.20 (or FC7) which ever comes first.
Thanks,
John

F7 is arriving real soon now and will be Xen 3.1.0 + 2.6.20 kernel. This kernel will fix the 3 core kernel-xen bugs that are being experianced by most people (one 32-bit data corruption issue, 2 SMP bugs).
We're going to apply these same patches to the FC6 kernel-xen which should also resolve the stability issues seen on the FC6 2.6.20 builds. I don't have an exact timeframe for this, but it should be in updates-testing at least fairly soon.
Dan.
Thanks Dan. Appreciate all the hard work you guys are doing.

I should point out, this is all actually in rawhide right now....
kernel-xen-2.6.20-2925.8.fc7 + xen-3.1.0-0.rc7.2.fc7
And since rawhide is in deep freeze now it is in pretty good shape. This is the rc7 pre-release, and we'll update to the GA xen release very shortly after Fedora 7 is released. There's no major changes missing there really.

I've been using Kernel-xen-2.6.20.2925 now since its release on the 21st on an FC6 Intel Core2 machine, 4GB Ram, Sata Disks, tv card. So far it seems that all of the previous instability issues have been addressed. I am also running a WinXp pro guest, running since the 21st, and have had no instability issues.
Thanks guys.

Those warnings should be solved on kernel-xen-2.6.20-2925.10.fc7, that went to f7-updates (but not to f7-final, as Fedora 7 was in freeze, already).
The Koji build task for kernel-xen-2.6.20-2925.10 is: http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=16419

thanks alot.

What about us poor schmoes on FC5? (Well, RHEL5 dom0, FC5 domU.)

FC5 and FC6 share pretty much identical kernel tree, so we shouldn't have any trouble getting the fix in that kernel-xen too. FC5 is going to be end-of-life pretty soon though....

I have just reassigned bug #235188 on bugzilla to myself, for the FC5 instance of the bug. FC5 users may add themselves to CC on this bug to get news on the status of the problem on FC5.
Althought I think there is time for fixing this bug, the end of FC5 updates cycle is soon, as Daniel already mentioned.

Yeah, I'm going to be testing F7 (boy, it's going to be a pain to google on F7 instead of FC7) domUs on RHEL5 dom0 once F7 is out...

* Tue May 15 2007 Eduardo Habkost ehabkost@redhat.com 1.2950 - Xen kernel: added patch to initialize pda properly on smp_prepare_cpus() * Mon May 14 2007 Eduardo Habkost ehabkost@redhat.com - Xen kernel: added patch from Stephen C. I've done a bit of testing with kernel-xen-2.6.20-1.2952.fc6 and it *does* seem to fix up the horrible instability I was seeing on i686. The only issue I've seen with this kernel is that my machine hangs just after "System halted" on shutdown (it never powers off). I'm thinking that that's likely unrelated to the HV fixes, however.

Yep, please file a separate bug report for the shutdown problem - its likely to be particular to your hardware.

So it's *not* supposed to do that ?!
I thought that was a Xen-not-supporting-ACPI thing, rather than a bug, but if not I'll add to the bug report.

I don't think it's supposed to do that. 2.6.19-1.2911.6.5.fc6xen shuts down without issue. I need to do a bit more testing/data collection and see if I can narrow down whether this is xen-specific or exists in "normal" kernels as well. When I open the BZ, I'll post a link to this thread...

I opened a bug for this issue:
bz 241381
2.6.19-based xen kernels could power themselves off, and "normal" 2.6.20-based kernels could as well. The problem seems to be localized to 2.6.20-based xen kernels. Not much hw info in there now, but I can certainly post some on request...
