[fedora] Apache and PHP
by Øyvind Lode
Hello there!
I have a Fedora 1 box running Apache 2.0.50.
I have installed it using Fedora RPMs.
A friend of mine has his homepage on my server and he have a PHP guestbook.
The PHP file is called guestbook.php and when users submit something in his
guestbook the php script writes that to a file called guestbook.txt.
This work just fine but he is worried by the permissions on the file.
The guestbook.txt file have the following permissions:
-rwxr-xrw-
Owner is the username of my friend and the groupowner is also my friend.
He have heard someplace that having such a file world writeable is a
security risk.
He tells me that the file should not be writeable for everyone but it has to
be or the php script fails I tell him...
But he insists that it's possible to use this php script and write to the
txt file without having all other users write permission.
He says that it's a way of just giving the script permission to write to the
txt file and that's a good idea because now everyone can do whatever thety
want to the txt file...
The only problem is that he doesn't remember how this was done and don't
know either...
How is this done by the Pro's?

Up2date not working
by Jonathan Allen
Hi All,
I have FC2 running on a machine inside our corporate firewall. The machine
has no direct Internet access but must use squid running on the firewall
machine. I started up2date, and it went through the setup-process for a
first-time connection. I pointed it at squid:3128 and it seemed happy.
However, when I tell it to go and start work, it puts up the following
process dialog:
Fetching http://fedora.redhat.com/download/up2date-mirrors/fedora-core-2/headers/h...
and sits there on a permanent basis. Monitoring the network, there is no
traffic and the squid log doesn't report any attempt to actually make the
access.
What gives ?

Help with NFS on FC1
by Chadley Wilson
Greetings,
Please can some one assist me here,
There is a spook in my FC1 PC config,
The NFS firstly would not start,
Now I get it started and no-one has permission to access the fileshare.
[root@preload root]# mount preload:/fc1 test/
mount: preload:/fc1 failed, reason given by server: Permission denied
[root@preload root]#ls -la /
snipped
drwxr-xr-x 6 rpcuser rpcuser 4096 Aug 31 05:01 fc1
snipped
What should the perms be here I had them as root and changed them,
I have also tried these lines in /etc/exports
/fc1 192.168.2.0/255.255.255.0(ro,sync,no_root_squash)
and ^^
/fc1 192.168.2.0/255.255.255.255(ro,sync,no_root_squash)
^^^
/var/log/messages reports:
Aug 31 12:53:52 preload rpc.mountd: refused mount request from
preload.teq.pinteq for /fc1 (/): no export entry
[root@preload root]# exportfs
/fc1 192.168.2.0/255.255.255.0
[root@preload root]#
Well I am very lost ?

problem with gnome-terminal
by arhinox
Hi everyone,
my gnome-terminal doesn't work! In my kde environment when I start
gnome-terminal it opens a window and it stays locked without any prompt.
Every shell in pre-existent gnome-terminal is still functioning, but if
I try to open a new tab/window that tab/window stays locked.
Anyone knows what's the reason of my problem and a solution (not a
reboot ;-) this is linux, not winnoz! )?
Tnx
PS: I updated my FC1 with testing fedora packages.

Severe probs with madwifi and FC2
by Peter Boy
I suffer from severe problems using madwifi for my atheros 5211 card in
my Thinkpad T40p
Using kernel 2.6.7-1.494 I can compile the current CVS tree (with a lot
of warnings), can load the modules but can't establish a connection to
an AP (iwlist can´t detect anything). Using ATrpms kernel module
madwifi-2.6.7-1.494.2.2-0.8.5.5-7 I can establish a connection, but with
a lot of hardware error messages in messages (curiously only sometimes).
Using kernel 2.6.8-1.521 I can't compile the CVS tree. After applying
the patch mentioned previously on this list, I can compile and load the
module, but again can't establish a connection. Same result using ATrpms
kernel-module-madwifi-2.6.8-1.521-0.9.3.1-11.rhfc2.at.
Trying to use driverloader with kernel 2.6.8-1.5 results in a kernel
panic.
There are no problems using FC1 and kernel 2.4
Did someone else experience such problems and could manage to find a
solution?
Thanks
Peter

FC2 AMD64 install error!
by Ram Kumar
I am a newbie to Linux. 12+ years of development experience in Mac +
Windows.
I have recently assembled myself an AMD 64 bit Athlon on MSI
motherboard, 512 MB Kingston RAM, 120 GB Seagate Hard Disk, Samsung
SyncMaster 793s monitor.
- I downloaded Fedora Core 2 x86 64
http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/2/x86_64/iso/FC2
-x86_64-disc1.iso
http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/2/x86_64/iso/FC2
-x86_64-disc2.iso
http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/2/x86_64/iso/FC2
-x86_64-disc3.iso
http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/2/x86_64/iso/FC2
-x86_64-disc4.iso
- When installing it does not initialize the X window system
- I tried installing in text mode, then switching to X Windows, but it
fails
- When at text login prompt, it keeps refreshing the display in an
attempt to start X Windows system
- Gives some error related to VESA driver & says 'unable to start X
Windows system'
- I installed my last copy of RedHat 9, which works beautifully on the
same system
- Checked the settings from this install for VESA driver, monitor
type, display frequency, etc... & applied to FC2 x86 64, but it still
does not start X Windows
I am zapped about what to do.
Can any expert help me here?
Regards, Ram

by Mark Haney
Is it possible to remotely log someone off? Cleanly? I have never
tried, but what I'd like to have is the ability to log off of GNOME a
user at my house via SSH.
