problem with gnome-terminal
by arhinox
Hi everyone,
my gnome-terminal doesn't work! In my kde environment when I start
gnome-terminal it opens a window and it stays locked without any prompt.
Every shell in pre-existent gnome-terminal is still functioning, but if
I try to open a new tab/window that tab/window stays locked.
Anyone knows what's the reason of my problem and a solution (not a
reboot ;-) this is linux, not winnoz! )?
Tnx
PS: I updated my FC1 with testing fedora packages.

OT: Help with Routing please..
by Sanjay Arora
Hi all
This question is not Fedora related, but could not find how to do this.
Being a newbie, decided to ask the masters ;-)
Network 1.
Ipcop firewall gateway..
Public address: 202.x.x.139 Netmask 255.255.255.248 given by ISP
DMZ: 192.168.100.1
Lan: 192.168.200.1
Gateway to Internet through 202.x.x.137 provided by ISP.
Network 2 (ISP Network...mostly hubs/repeaters & some switches)
NAT Gateway to internet through ISP provided by ISP through 172.16.0.1
My FC1 machine address: 172.16.0.133 Netmask 255.255.255.0, though I
have not set it, as the ISP does not allow me to go on the net through
this GW...only has given me an IP address to use on the local
net...basically to test my machine his network i.e. from outside my
network.
Other friends on ISP LAN connected through the ISP: 172.16.0.x
Now, the problem is that my FC1 machine though physically connected to
my public IP (three connections to the hub...my ISP, my Ipcop machine
and my FC1 machine), does not talk to my public IP.
Ping says destination unreachable...I used ethereal to check the
problem...my public IP firewall machine (202.x.x.139) is not responding
to FC1 (172.16.0.133) ARP requests. I have set route in both machines
by:
On 172.16.0.133
route add -host 202.x.x.139 dev eth2
On 202.x.x.139
route add -host 172.16.0.133 dev eth2
I think that the problem lies with different broadcast addresses, so the
202.x.x.139 machine is not getting the ARP request.
My firewall does not block ICMP requests.
Second problems is with my friends having 172.16.0.0 address with my ISP
and having a GW address of 172.16.0.1 (which my FC1 machine does not
have). They cant connect to my machine despite being on the same segment
of my ISP Lan, without going through the internet. As their Internet
bandwidth is capped...they cant transfer files with me. How to get their
machines to talk with mine, without going to the ISP Gateway...some are
Win machines & some Linux.
Hope someone will help me...wont say can help me because I know
otherwise ;-) Also, please provide pointers to some resources to this
type of (not normal) TCP/IP routing...so I can learn and maybe someday
be able to help some newbie like myself. Strangely...Google was not my
friend this time ;-(
My thanks for reading ALL the above.
With best regards.
Sanjay.

Modem problems
by Ender Konukoglu
I have installed Fedora Core 2 in my hp ze 4400 laptop last week.
However I have a problem with the modem. The os does not recognize my
modem and can't find any modem in the computer? I have tried Suse
before that and there was no problem in finding the modem. Have
anybody had a similar problem? Or any suggestions are welcomed.
Thanks a lot.

Dual Boot XP/FC2 Install Problem
by Richard Heldmann
I am trying to install FC2 on a Dell Dimension 8300, with a Seagate Model ST3120026AS SATA 120Gb hard drive. The controller is an Intel 82801ED Ultra ATA Storage Controller. I have repartioned the drive with Partition Magic and formatted the last 20Gb as ext2. There are no errors on either partition and the machine boots into XP normally. Upon starting the installation with the known geometry,
boot: linux hda=14589,255,63
I get the following error message:
hda: IRQ probe failed
hda: no response
hda:non-IDE drive, CHS=14589,255,63
ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14
hda Invalid Geometry: 255 Physical heads?
ide-default: hda: Failed to register the driver with ide.c
Kernel panic: ide: default attach failed.
The machine is of course locked up.
Help appreciated.

Printing from GIMP
by Julien Olivier
Hi list.
I've got an HP PSC 2175 all-in-one printer. It's automatically
detected/setup by kudzu and system-config-printer.
The only problem is that, in GIMP, it's configured by default as a
Postscript printer. The result, when I try to print, is a very long
sequel of pages full of ascii codes... Not quite pretty.
Finally, I found out that I could setup my printer through GIMP by
choosing a printer model (other than Postscript). The problem here is
that the printer list is different from the list in system-config-
printer, and my printer doesn't show up in the list.
Now, selecting a different model from mine results in bad quality
printing, but at least it prints something...
So, my questions are:
- Isn't possible to have kudzu/system-config-printer automatically
setup GIMP's printer as well (not default to postscript) ?
- Why is GIMP's printers list different (and shorter) than system-
config-printer's list ? And which model should I choose when I have an
HP PSC 2175 printer ?
Thanks in advance for your help.

ATI drivers for Laptop
by Martijn Bronkhorst
Hello,
I'm not sure if i am saying this right, but i'm trying to configure a ATI
128 mobility video card while using fedora core 2. The drivers for linux
that ati offers did not do the trick.
I really need to get this working, because I need an external monitor now
first before I ever see the display right. And on a laptop, this isn't very
nice.
If you can help me out, please do.
Thanx in Advance

network install
by Simon Tierney
Thanks for replying about my installation problem on the mashita dvd multi drive.
I have broadband but I have never successfully installed over a network connection.
It makes sense to me that the installation of Fedora2 is stalling due to lack of a driver because this is a new laptop.
Can someone give me a URL and some instructions how to do a network install after booting to the CDROM?
Thanks for any help.

my boot is on the IDE , I have an adaptec controler and a disk.
I make one partition on the disk with mk2fs.
In the fstab I put dev/sda1/ vfat.
How can I create a mounting point on the scsi disk if I have no repository on the scsi disk and I can not mount the disk because

USB Flash Disk + data not sync'ed during unload
by Ow Mun Heng
Guys,
this is causing data curruption. I'm using Gnome + FC2 and wondering
why the act of umounting the drive does not call the "sync" before it's
marked as unmounted?
Right now, what I see happening is that, when you click on the Unmount
VOlume icon, the icon will straight away gets changed to the unmounted
status, but data is only starting to get sync'ed. And I've unknowingly
just pulled out the disk before it fully sync's.
This is not good.
I think I might have fried a 64MB key not too long ago due to this.
