F11 upgrade - worse than Windows
by Timothy Murphy
I'm trying to upgrade a Thinkpad T23 (with preupgrade) from F10.
Everything went fine until "Finishing upgrade process",
which has been running now for 14 hours,
with that ghastly imitation-Windows yo-yo swinging from side to side.
I am told, "This may take a little while" !!!
Please, this is Linux.
Tell us what is happening,
and show us what progress is being made.

Does FC 11 support the D-link DWL-520 wireless card? When trying to
set it up the mac address does not get probed nor can I get it
working.

How to delete a printer if cups server is down?
by Paulo Cavalcanti
Hi,
how can I delete a printer if its cups server is down?
This is specially annoying with laptops, which may
have several printers visible in system-config-printer,
but none of them will be ever used again.
I tried deleting /var/cache/cups/remote.cache,
but it is always created again, with all the unusable printers in there.
This is a Fedora 10.
Thanks.

Preupgrade F10 to F11: Installer boot fails in GRUB
by Robert Nichols
Running preupgrade in F10, all packages are downloaded successfully, and I click
on the "Reboot now" button. When the system reboots, I select the "Upgrade to
Fedora 11 (Leonidas)" entry from the GRUB menu and get an immediate "Error 15:
File not found" failure from GRUB.
Everything is on one partition (no separate /boot partition).
In /boot/grub/grub.conf:

I have no idea what file GRUB is complaining it can't find. (Don't you just
love error messages like that?)

Broadcom BCM43XX Nightmarte on F11
by Christopher A Williams
I have a couple of laptops I've been working on that I have not been
able to get WiFi to come up on at all.
Both of them have the Broadcom BC43XX series adapters. One of them is a
Gateway MX6030 laptop equipped with a Broadcom BCM4318 adapter and the
other is a Dell Inspiron e1705 with a BCM4311 adapter.
In each case, the default F11 B43 drivers simply don't work at all. I
also have tried the kmod-wl / broadcom-wl drivers from RPM Fusion. No
Dice.
This is really starting to irritate me!!!! It's almost to the point that
I'm ready to rip these adapters out of these machines and replace them
with Intel ones if I can find some that will fit.
What needs to happen to have Broadcom's goofy hardware to behave and
actually work using F11?

Some issues in F11
by Bradley
Hello, everyone.
Well, I finally got myself in a position where I could finally update
from F8 to F11 - much to the complaining of another family member.
Since I wanted to reorganize my file system structure, I decided to just
back it up and do a fresh install of F11 (and from the looks of things,
I'm glad I did). For the most part, after using it a couple of days, it
seems to run okay with a few nuisances that I wanted to verify if anyone
else is having the same issues or if there is a setting somewhere I'm
not aware of.
- On varying software packages, occasionally (actually rarely) when I
click on an icon or menu option I get a different menu or option than
what I selected even though the display indicated that I successfully
selected what I wanted.
- Upon installation, the system was unable to determine what type of
monitor was available and doesn't give me the option to manually select
the monitor's type or capabilities. Since the xorg.conf file is not
used in F11, I can't simply edit it with the display mode to use and
when I create a new one it refuses to use the display settings I put in
therby not taking advantage of the full capabilities of my monitor.
- When attempting to select multiple files & folder in Nautilus, instead
of selecting the folders, it will not select them but expands them (and
their contents) until after I have selected a few other files / folders
first. - Sounds like a bug to me.
- I can no longer play MP3 files with Rythymbox and in Nautilus (audio
preview) by default in F11 where it could in F8! (This is a major issue
with my family)
I am sure more issues will be posted later as I recognize them but if
someone could offer suggestions, it would be helpful.

F11 - unrant
by Aaron Konstam
What I hate about going to a new version of Fedora is configuring all
the media handling software.
Well on my machine in F11 it was a breeze. I am running youtube videos,
playing npr programs (which used to give me headaches) and have gotten
CNN videos to work which used to be very difficult. I was amazed.
Good job to the developers.

F10 -> F11 using preupgrade
by Peter J. Stieber
I have a Dell Power Edge 1435SC that is running F10. I followed the
preupgrade procedure on
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_use_PreUpgrade
When the machine rebooted it asked me to select the Ethernet connection
to update over using the NetworkManager. I couldn't get this to work.
On a positive note, when I rebooted the machine, F10 still worked. I
was not using the NetworkManager with F10...
$ chkconfig | grep etw
NetworkManager 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off
network 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off
Is there a way around this?
TIA,
Pete

Fedora 11 UTF-8 and fonts (clearcase and citrix ICAClient, and maybe motif in general?)
by Andy Wang
Hi all,
I posted this on fedoraforum.org when I was testing the preview F11
and just did again to see if anyone using F11 release has any ideas,
but I thought I'd try the mailing list as well:
*** post from fedora forum ***
The Citrix ICAClient and clearcase gui tools don't launch properly. I
get the following:
Warning:
Name: FONTLIST_DEFAULT_TAG_STRING
Class: XmRendition
Conversion failed. Cannot load font.
on the console in a nice steady stream. Citrix's wfica just fails to
launch, and the wfcmgr is missing all fonts. Clearcase gui tools
complains that it's unable to create a text drawing font set and the
tools exit.
I can workaround the problem two ways, one LANG=C instead of
en_US.UTF-8 or removing the cjk fonts, specifically, the following two
packages:
cjkuni-uming-fonts-0.2.20080216.1-23.fc11.noarch
cjkuni-fonts-common-0.2.20080216.1-23.fc11.noarch
Any ideas on other solutions for this problem?
*** end post from fedora forum ***
Does anyone have any thoughts about this, the clearcase gui tools and
ICAClient are the only two motif applications I have readily available
to test (wish those would just move off motif, but I'm doubting that
IBM will do anythign with clearcase anytime remotely soon).
Just looking for general ideas on how to troubleshoot this. I don't
understand font loading anymore, especially with the UTF-8 encoding
stuff, so I don't know why LANG=C would actually allow this to work.
Can anyone provide a short primer on how that works, or let me know
what's a good tool to try to debug font loading and find out what
fonts it either can't load, or can't find?
Thanks,
Andy
