See USB-C charging capacity?
by Chris Adams
The "fun" with USB-C is that not all chargers, cables, and devices
support the same charging power. Is there a way in Linux to see what is
currently happening? E.g. when I accidentally plug my notebook into the
15W port instead of the 65W port - how can I tell?

firefox keeps freezing on me
by Michael Hennebry
My firefox on F38 freezes a lot.
I get "Firefox" is not responding a lot.
At one time, I thought it was because of too many windows and tabs open.
I closed several windows.
Shutting it down and bringing it back up often helped,
but not necessarily for very long.
According to top, firefox freezes even when the load
average is less than two, most of swap is free
and neither firefox nor its minions are near the top of top.
My new suspicion is that it waits for something
that does not happen often enough.
How do I diagnose this?

Clean install of Fedora 39 on Dell notebook was working, but recent update not getting 50 selerts??
by Michael D. Setzer II
Did a clean install of Fedora 39 on a Dell Latitude 5580 and was
working fine.
After a recent updated started have it get like 50 alerts that almost
all were to add exceptions.
tried changing it from enforcing to permissive but no change
then changed targetted to minimum and no change.
Go thru the alerts and delete all, and they just popped up again
and again.
Tried to report, but it would except my login and password?
Ended up disabling selinux to get machine to not have alerts.
Tried to login to the bugzillia with my id on main machine, and it
would not accept password. Did the change option, and entered
new password that showed as Good, but then it came with
message that some system is being used, and Good wasn't good
enough. Had to use one of those generated passwords to get it to
show strong, and then it changed password??
All my Fedora 38 machines are working fine. Have another
machine that I upgraded from 38 to 39, and it seems to have no
problems.
Got frustrated and ended up just disabling the selinux completely.
Seems strange that it starts reporting all this issues, and option to
fix them are almost all to add selinux exceptions?
Thanks.

Apparently "Isolated Web Co" is a Firefox process which has been
reported for years as leaking memory, though I haven't noticed it doing
this myself (I have a lot of swap). Some people think it's related to
viewing YouTube videos, which I do do.
My question is: why doesn't the OOM killer stamp on this before it gets
out of hand? Isn't that what it's for?

F38 mouse hover over Thunderbird folders changed
by Robert Moskowitz
For years, if I hovered the mouse over a folder, it would show me the
subject of the most recent message.
Now it is showing how many messages unread. I can SEE that always
displayed with the folder name...
So what changed and how do I change things back?

btrfs Backups
by Tim Evans
Since tine immemorial (I first touched a UNIX system circa 1984), I have
used the venerable 'dump' utility to do automated full and incremental
backups to an NFS-mounted network storage appliance (NAS).
Now, with a brand new laptop, with fresh install using btrfs
filesystems, I find 'dump' does not work on them. (Fortunately, I was
able to use the companion utility 'restore' to recover my /home backups
and assorted config files from the root filesystem of my old laptop.)
So, I'm looking re-script my backups using btrfs tools. So far, it
appears I cannot do btrfs snapshots to the NAS and I'm not wanting to
attach another disk to the laptop just for snapshots. Are there
analogous (to 'dump' and 'restore') btrfs utilities that can do backups
this way, and can be scripted?

USB-C cabling
by fedora@eyal.emu.id.au
A while back I acquired a NVMe caddy but did not get to use it. I now did as I got an NVMe disk.
The caddy is
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001346524009.html
Color: 10Gbps M2PV C3
The disk is
1TB WD Blue SN580 NVMe WDS100T3B0E (PCie v4)
I expected to see 1GB/s speed.
Read [X=Y] cable from USB-X to USB-Y. Caddy on left, machine on right.
1) Directly connecting the caddy to the machine (caddy-[C=C]-socket) I see 36MB/s. So USB-2? speed.
2) Using a caddy-[C=USB3M]-socket I get 442 MB/s. So USB-3.0 speed. This is expected.
3) The kicker: caddy-[C=USB3M] then [FUSB3=C]-socket (two cables) I get the expected 1000MB/s.
I tried a few C=C , no change. Two different machines. same.
What I want, of course, is good speed with a straight C=C cable.
TIA

Upgrade KDE Wayland Spin 38->39 KDE Background Screen Issue
by richard emberson
Upgrade KDE Wayland Spin 38->39 KDE Background Screen Issue
KDE Screen Issue (or Plasma issue, or...)
1) Login screen comes up and can login.
2) KDE screen mix of colors and black... moving mouse and screen continues
to redraw random colors (but, mostly black).
3) Bottom panel (in hide mode) comes up and looks normal. Top ToolBar
is drawing like the screen (not normal) but I can tell its being drawn
ontop of the screen background (different colors/black).
5) Firefox comes up rendering like normal.
6) Thunderbird asks for password and it comes up drawing like normal.
7) Using Mouse Right Button, menu come up (look normal) and can
8 "Open Terminal". Kconsole comes up like normal.
9) From Kconsole can launch alacritty multiple times all normal.
10) Background and ToolBar still not rendering correctly.
11) Can move mouse over ToolBar and popups appear. Can also click and
launch/hide terminals, firefox, thunderbird when mouse if over their
position in ToolBar.
12) I can render a jpeg photo in eog and it comes up just fine.
With Fedora 38 KDE Spin I did not have this issue with the background
or ToolBar.
So, has anyone seen this behavior?
Where do I start?
Thanks.
Richard

Modern Dual-Boot Setup Prcoedure (Dell XPS)
by Tim Evans
Brand New Dell XPS 15 coming tomorrow, to replace my venerable Lenovo
T530. (Looking forward to something a little lighter to lug around.)
It's been 10 years since I set the T530 up to dual-boot Fedora and Windows.
I'm sure I can figure out how to reduce the size of the Windows
partition to make space for Fedora, but am unsure of the process for
current PC BIOS and grub setup for dual boot. Or is the Fedora installer
smart enough to handle it for me?
Are there docs for this? Thanks.
