f38: 2 Thunderbird misbehaviors.
by home user
(Fedora 38; home workstation; Thunderbird 115.5.0)
In early October, I upgraded from Fedora-37 to Fedora-38. Since then, I've been consistently experiencing two types of misbehavior in Thunderbird.
1. When I switch e-mail accounts or folders within an e-mail account, the list of messages (shows subject, sender, date, time, etc.) consistently scrolls away from the most recent message by several lines. It also often does this when I manually scroll to a desired message and select it. Further, when I delete a message, the message list scrolls by several lines.
2. In the calendar, when I select a date and click any of the New Event things (button, menu item, etc.), the Thunderbird window locks up. I have to click the New Event thing a few times before Thunderbird unlocks. Then a few new event GUIs pop up. After that, I am able to create the new event.
These problems showed up immediately after the F37 to F38 upgrade. So the problems seem more likely to be the Fedora upgrade rather than Thunderbird itself. Six Thunderbird patches (according to dnf history) since the upgrade have made no difference.
How do I fix this?

how to remove unwanted old kernels.
by home user
Good morning,
After yesterday's weekly patches via "dnf upgrade", I have more old kernels than I want. I also have 2 memtest entries in the grub menu.
What is the current, simple, best practice f38 way of removing the oldest kernel, both from the hard drive and from the grub menu?
What is the current, simple, best practice, f38 way of removing the oldest memtest, both from the hard drive (if it's there) and from the grub menu?

Login loop in KDE sddm
by Frank Bures
I am having a problem with login page in Fedora39 KDE.
Everything was fine after original installation on a new HW, then in about
two days it stopped working.
When I log in I get black screen for a fraction of a second and then I'm
back in the login screen. The system behaves the same for my account and
the root account. I created a new account and it behaves the same as well,
so it must be a system problem - as opposed to user config problem.
Workaround: Switch to CLI, log in and do "startplasma-wayland". The
correct plasma desktop for the user appears and is fully functional.
Though the workaround exists, it is still quite annoying. Any solution
would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Frank

Samsung SSD firmware
by Patrick O'Callaghan
I have a 2TB Samsung 860 EVO SSD as my main drive. It's working well,
but Samsung released updated firmware since I got it, and their update
tool only works under Windows.
Any suggestions on how I could update the SSD? (I know, "if it's not
broken, don't fix it" :-)

First, I tried the easier thing: another desktop manager. I used KDE rather than Gnome. The problems did not occur. But the fonts were wrong, though both the system fonts and Thunderbird's fonts are set properly. By the way, Thunderbird worked fine the day before the full upgrade from f37 to f38. I do not know what the Thunderbird version was; dnf history did not show it. I patch everything weekly.
A few years ago, with help from a Thunderbird programmer, I had to make difficult changes to my profile/settings/configuration. I no longer recall what those were, but I don't want to lose them. So to try your first suggestion, I'll use a separate user account in which I do not use Thunderbird. Let me address John's post first. I'll get to thunderbird -ProfileManager
after that, if John's suggestion does not work for me.

F38 adding user to dialout group without reboot
by Robert Moskowitz
I have added me to group dialout:
$ groups rgm
rgm : rgm wheel dialout
But I cannot access /dev/ttyUSB0
screen /dev/ttyUSB0 115200
Does not work but:
sudo screen /dev/ttyUSB0 115200
does.
Dr. Google seems to think I need a reboot for this to work. I have too
many things running to want to reboot.
Actually I am trying to get the Arduino IDE stuff to work and it wants
to use the ttyUSB0 and gets permissions denied.
Is rebooting the only option?

Disabling lockscreen in GNOME for specific apps?
by Frederic Muller
Hi!
I run a simulator which is just an executable downloaded from the
developers website and unfortunately the screen locks after 5 minutes
... forcing to quickly press a key (hoping it won't do anything
unexpected with the simulator) and ... usually crash.
Is there a way to disable the lockscreen just for this app under GNOME?
Thank you.

printer only prints in flip mode
by Michael Hennebry
My Brother HL-L2360DW B&W laser printer
is only printing in flip mode,
i.e., when it prints 8.5x11 two-sided portrait,
to read the back page, one must flip it vertically
by a short side, rather that horizontally by a long edge.
The defaults for the printer is set to
job-sheets=none, none media=na_letter_8.5x11in sides=two-sided-long-edge
I've restarted CUPS on F38.
The problem occurs with both gedit and vim.
In the case of gedit, page setup tells me I've set it up correctly,
but it still does the wrong thing.
Any ideas on what is wrong, how I can fix it or how I can find out?
