Re: [Outreachy] Fwd: Community Operations: Outreachy
by Remy DeCausemaker
Excellent :)
I'm traveling on business today to NYC, but should be online in couple of
hours.
You should be working on attaining the "bootstrapped" badges series, and
looking for interesting projects and tools on the CommOps wiki page.
An important part of Outreachy, and Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) in
general, is self selection and self direction. You are most likely to learn
and succeed in areas that interest YOU, so it is important to identify what
area of the project is most interesting for you personally. Once you have
found an interesting tool or project, you can ask some of the other folks
in channel about it, see if they have suggestions, and also check their
issue trackers for tasks/bugs.
If you have questions, it is best to ask them in channel publicly, because
likely others are having similar issues, and we can all learn from
eachother together :)
You are also more likely to get answers from other mentors as well, instead
of just blocking on me.
I've cc'd the Fedora Outreachy list on this reply, which you should also
continue doing in the future. In Fedora (and many other FOSS projects) we
default to open and public communication unless there is a compelling
reason not to.
Hope this helps,
--RemyD.

Vnisha,
We're glad to hear you're interested in participating in our Outreachy
cycle with Fedora :)
As per the instructions on our Wiki Page (
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Outreachy/2015), you should join our IRC
channel #fedora-outreachy on irc.freenode.net, and introduce yourself there
to the other mentors and community members.
Then start looking at the Community Operations (CommOps) Team's wiki page (
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/CommOps) to get an idea of the areas we work
within at Fedora, and the types of tools that are available to us.
Once we get a feel for your interests, we can point you towards specific
mentors and parts of the project that suit you, that would be a good fit
for contributions you are interested in exploring.
You should also join #fedora-commops, which is where our team hangs out and
coordinates our efforts.
See you soon,
--RemyD.

Re:

Karthiga,
Please be sure to reply-all in the future, so that your message goes to our
mailing list and the other Outreachy mentors can meet you and get to know
you a bit more.
You can find the hubs repository at the URL here:
https://pagure.io/fedora-hubs/branch/develop
You can then run the following from the command-line:
git clone ssh://git@pagure.io/fedora-hubs.git
git fetch
git checkout develop
The README file will walk you through the development server setup:
https://pagure.io/fedora-hubs/blob/develop/f/README.rst
There's also a tutorial in that README about 'Stubbing out a new widget' -
follow those steps too.
After you've done those tasks, we have a list of widgets that need to be
created under the "issue" tab on the pagure.io page. When you're ready to
take a try at that, let us know and we can help you figure out a good one
to start out with.
Good Luck, and we'll see you in IRC.

Re: Interest in Fedora Outreachy Winter 2015
by Remy DeCausemaker
Thanks for reaching out. It's awesome to hear that you are interested in
Contributing to Fedora.
Unfortunately, I'm going to have to start with a caveat that Outreachy
Interns are expected to work full-time, and not be enrolled in study during
their internship. That being said, exceptions can be made if the overlap is
not significant.
--- Snip from https://www.gnome.org/outreachy/ ---
It's expected that the participants are able to have the internship work be
a primary focus during the internship dates and spend 40 hours a week on
it.
Please do not apply for the program if you will be in school full-time or
will have a full-time job during most of the time between December 7 and
March 7. Instead, you are welcome to start contributing to any participating
organization <https://wiki.gnome.org/Outreachy#Participating_Organizations>
in your spare time, apply for May to August Outreachy or Google Summer of
Code <https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/> internships, or
apply for internships or jobs with our sponsors
<https://wiki.gnome.org/Outreachy/Opportunities>, as works best for you.
Many of the mentors participating in the program are happy to offer
informal mentorship any time throughout the year, however you need to
review the information for the organization you are interested in to see if
it has mentors available.

Will you be enrolled in school during the winter cycle?

Ma'am/Sir,
I am Ishani Chugh, a third year undergraduate student of Electronics and Communications Engineering at International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad. I am passionate about Open Source Development. I have some experience working with git, I aspire to contribute to Fedora as Open source Developer under OPW and I am interested in working on the project 'Fedora Infrastructure Web Application Development: Fedora Hubs', since I feel I have the enthusiasm and skills required. I will appreciate any assistance with regards to beginner contribution on this project.
Sincerely,

Assuming that won't be an issue...
The project you would most likely be interested in then, is Fedora Hubs:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Outreachy/2015#Development_Projects
Take a look at the description, and familiarize yourself with the
requirements.
Once you've done that, you should join the Outreachy Mailing list, to stay
up to date on the program:
https://lists.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/women-outreach
There are a number of IRC channels where our mentors for Fedora Hubs can be
found, but I would recommend joining #fedora-outreachy first, and
introducing yourself to the folks there. There is a specific channel for
the project at #fedora-hubs, if you wanna start lurking there.
See you soon,
--RemyD.
P.S. - If you are available, you are welcome to join us in
#fedora-meeting-2 tomorrow at Noon ET for a meeting of our Community
Operations (CommOps) team, where we'll be meeting/introducing other
Outreachy applicants and mentors.

Karthiga,
Great to meet you, I'm thrilled to hear you are interested in contributing
to Fedora :)
Be sure to join the women-outreach mailing list as well, to keep up with
any updates on the program:
https://lists.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/women-outreach
Then take a look at the Outreachy Wiki Page:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Outreachy/2015
On that page are the two projects we are hiring for this cycle, and the
mentors for each project. Once you've read about the projects, you should
join #fedora-outreachy on irc.freenode.net, and introduce yourself to the
folks there, and tell us about which project you are interested in.
Once you've done that, we can point you to the other specific places and
mentors in your area of interest, and help you get started on your first
contributions.
See you soon,
--RemyD.
P.S. - In the meantime, if you are available you are welcome to join us for
a meeting of the Community Operatoons (CommOps) team tomorrow at noon in
#fedora-meeting-2, where you can meet other applicants and mentors in the
program.
