On the security of the Linux disk encryption LUKS
by Jeffrey Walton
Here's some interesting reading. "On the security of the Linux disk
encryption LUKS," https://dys2p.com/en/2023-05-luks-security.html:
Background
On April 17, 2023 Matthew “mjg59” Garrett published an appeal to
change the key derivation function (KDF) of LUKS-encrypted volumes:
PSA: upgrade your LUKS key derivation function. He refers to the
article “Une lettre d’Ivan, enfermé à la prison de Villepinte :
perquisitions et disques durs déchiffrés” (crosspost from
paris-luttes.info).
According to the source, two encrypted computers belonging to an
accused person had been decrypted – a Windows computer encrypted with
BitLocker and a LUKS-encrypted computer running Ubuntu 18. (It is not
clear from the text whether it is Ubuntu 18.04 or 18.10, but this is
not relevant)...

F38 update, chrome display problem
by Neal Becker
After updating f37->f38, now chrome-stable is unusable. This is intel
graphics.
The displays of all web pages are unreadable.
I tried installing google-chrome-beta, and this seems to be working fine.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Neal

Thunderbird black at first launch with F38
by Frederic Muller
Hi!
Installed F38 about a week ago from scratch (wayland & GNOME). When I
launch Thunderbird the first time at every session it starts as a black
screen except for the title bar and then... I believe nothing happens
but since I cannot see anything I close it. When I relaunch it
everything works normally.
Not really a life threatening situation but I was wondering if it was
possible to fix this. Any idea?
Thank you.

F38: GNOME on XORG: Some apps have Windows titlebar with
Minimize/Maximize Buttons
by Dario Lesca
I use "GNOME on Xorgs", after upgrade to F38 some apps, like Firefox or
Libreoffice, are show with Minimize/Maximize Buttons on windows
titlebar.
Also F38 Workstation live version, if you set password to liveuser and
logon with "GNOME on Xorgs" (and not with default GNOME on Wayland),
show same apps with Minimize/Maximize Buttons on windows titlebar
Other apps, like gnome-terminal or nautilus, are displayed correctly,
without Minimize and Maximize Buttons on windows titlebar
I use the Middle-Click mouse button set to "lower" via gnome-tweaks,
and this behaviour DO NOT WORK on windows with Minimize/Maximize
Buttons on windows titlebar.
It's possible to disable Minimize/Maximize Buttons on windows titlebar
for all windows, even if I use "GNOME on Xorgs"?
Or it's a bug?
Many thanks for your help

Is there some way to get this info from the console, for machines

Converting ext4 to btrfs
by Paul Smith
Dear All,
I have always upgraded Fedora from the previously installed version.
Consequently, I still have ext4. To have btrfs, is it needed to do a
Fedora clean install?
Thanks in advance,
Paul

Post F38 upgrade/fresh install: printing text files via paps (a
Postscript converter) prints raw postscript
by Max Pyziur
Greetings,
My F38 upgrade on my desktop and my fresh install on my laptop (because of
an upgrade crash) are taking place in less than stellar fashion. But given
that things have been going very well in this regard since F27 (circa late
2017) something like this shouldn't be unexpected.
Trying to focus on one problem at a time, I am now dealing with printing
text files.
For the last ten or so years, I've relied on enscript and then paps. I
think that I switched to paps because enscript at the time didn't support
utf-8.
paps has worked as designed for me until the upgrade/fresh install. My
sole availabe printer is an HP P3015. On my desktop, I use the HP
Postscript driver; on my laptop I use the HP LaserJet p3010 Series hpijs
pcl3, 3.22.10 driver for the printer.
When printing from a web browser (firefox of brave), libreoffice, evince,
AcroRead, or gedit, the results are correct.
But now with the flip to F38, and issuing a paps command like this (which
I've run for a decade):
paps --columns=3 --landscape --paper=letter --font="Monospace 6"
/path/to/some/textfile | lpr -P lp3
the printer prints raw postscript.
(lp3 is the name that I use for the HP printer)
I suspect that I am part of a small community of paps users. But I would
very much like to continue either using paps or something similar.
Could it be pango (required by paps)? some other possible dependency? Are
there alternatives? Is there some nuance in configuring the printer?
I'd appreciate any advice here.
Much thanks,
Max
